Book excerpt: 2019 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award Finalist "Science book of the year"—The Guardian One of New York Times 100 Notable Books for 2018 One of Publishers Weekly's Top Ten Books of 2018 One of Kirkus's Best Books of 2018 One of Mental Floss's Best Books of 2018 One of Science Friday's Best Science Books of 2018 “Extraordinary”—New York Times Book Review "Magisterial"—The Atlantic "Engrossing"—Wired "Leading contender as the most outstanding nonfiction work of the year"—Minneapolis Star-Tribune Celebrated New York Times columnist and science writer Carl Zimmer presents a profoundly original perspective on what we pass along from generation to generation. Charles Darwin played a crucial part in turning heredity into a scientific question, and yet he failed spectacularly to answer it. The birth of genetics in the early 1900s seemed to do precisely that. Gradually, people translated their old notions about heredity into a language of genes. As the technology for studying genes became cheaper, millions of people ordered genetic tests to link themselves to missing parents, to distant ancestors, to ethnic identities... But, Zimmer writes, “Each of us carries an amalgam of fragments of DNA, stitched together from some of our many ancestors. Each piece has its own ancestry, traveling a different path back through human history. A particular fragment may sometimes be cause for worry, but most of our DNA influences who we are—our appearance, our height, our penchants—in inconceivably subtle ways.” Heredity isn’t just about genes that pass from parent to child. Heredity continues within our own bodies, as a single cell gives rise to trillions of cells that make up our bodies. We say we inherit genes from our ancestors—using a word that once referred to kingdoms and estates—but we inherit other things that matter as much or more to our lives, from microbes to technologies we use to make life more comfortable. We need a new definition of what heredity is and, through Carl Zimmer’s lucid exposition and storytelling, this resounding tour de force delivers it. Weaving historical and current scientific research, his own experience with his two daughters, and the kind of original reporting expected of one of the world’s best science journalists, Zimmer ultimately unpacks urgent bioethical quandaries arising from new biomedical technologies, but also long-standing presumptions about who we really are and what we can pass on to future generations.

Book excerpt: Maya San Lucas had been lost in her dreamworld for the better part of five years. But Desparia was no longer a fantasy world for her. It was a nightmare, full of powers and creatures beyond her control. Going to that world took everything from her, destroying her sanity, and bringing her and her friends to certain doom. The life of a thief, and a mage, was so much more exciting than high school, but in all the wrong ways. After returning from that world of horrors, Maya is left with nightmares plaguing both her sleeping and waking life. Demons stalk her from the corner of her eye, or even out in broad daylight. Therapy was doing little to help, though she knew that her therapist was likely to have her committed for telling the truth. The only thing that lent her any solace was the new girl Meg. For some reason, the demons never came when she was with her. But as Maya's powers grew, summoning magic to a world that had none, she got a disheartening look at the world that she had left behind. A new evil has come to the empire, taking the place of the fallen emperor as if nothing had changed. When her friends became more determined than ever to return and carry on the fight, Maya ran from them, seeking the safety of the new girl. But Meg has secrets of her own, mysteries that Maya wasn't quite ready for. And as the two of them grew closer, there were other powers coming into the picture that Maya wasn't expecting.

Book excerpt: High-school senior Gina Corcoran lived a fairly normal life with her mother, grandmother, and brother. Once, every year or so, she would even get to leave her home in San Antonio, Texas, and spend a few weeks in the summer with her great-aunt Anna, at a small farmhouse just outside of Binghamton, New York. There she would be told stories of her family, of how they came from the Italian island of Sicily to Americafirst to New York, and then, when her grandmother moved, to Texasand of her life in San Antonio. Family stories like these often have a lasting effect upon a person. The stories that she wasnt told were older, deeper, darker, and would change her life forever. This is the story of Gina, the great-niece of Anna Del Forno, the wealthy owner and CEO of Del Forno Bottling, producers of Acqua DArcamo, a popular, bottled water made at a plant on the grounds of the Del Forno Villa, an estate in Arcamo, Sicily. How Anna came to be the head of such a profitable company and all the abundance that came with it, at first meant very little to Gina, until of course, the legacy took hold. What some would see as a family legacy, others might view as a curse. How could Gina have possibly known what turns her life would take, when with each passing day, each startling revelation brought her closer to danger, dancing with death. Have you ever been frightened? So afraid that you could barely control your own emotions? Imagine what it would feel like if your inner fears and angers got the better of you and came out. Think of it as letting out the inner beast. Imagine, over time, being able to allow those feelings to come out whenever you needed them. Oh, and imagine that when you do, you are no longer you, but rather a fully grown wolfnot a monster, not a science experiment, but a genuine, living wolf. You can think like a wolf thinks, see like a wolf sees, even hunt with the quiet tenacity in which a wolf hunts. And when you hunger, you will hunt. All this unfolds here, and more, as Gina becomes immersed in the Waters of Arcamo.

But when you suffer from brain-erasing stage fright and an incredible female-phobia, those goals can be a bit tricky to attain. Book Alzheimer S What They Forget to Tell You

Download or read book Alzheimer S What They Forget to Tell You written by Caron Leid and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although more and more people are being affected by Alzheimer’s disease, there is not enough information surrounding the true daily struggle of the disease. Although parts of this story were extremely difficult to write, and worse to ensure that the moments were captured exactly as they were it really is a personal journey. This is a story to inspire people not to take any moment for granted. This disease does not only rob a person of their memory, it takes their dignity and independence with it. It is a story of testing someone’s resolve, and realizing that life is truly what you make of it. This story is dedicated to my mother, I love her and I know there are still pieces of her still with me, and that is what I hold on to. I wish I had the information in this book, when my mother was fi rst diagnosed with this horrible disease, but a long with my story, I have put in a lot of resources that are available to others. It also shows that even though you don’t think that you have strength, you fi nd a way and you don’t give up. I hope my story inspires you, and at least you can use something in this book, whether the disease affects someone you know, or for preventative care.
