Book excerpt: Visible cracks are a way that buildings communicate that they are under stress. However, not all cracks will lead to structural failure. If cracks are properly interpreted, then unnecessary remedial work can be avoided. The people who are best placed to notice building cracks are the building?s occupants. If an occupant does not understand the significance of a crack, then their response can range from unnecessary emotional distress over non-structural cracks, to an oblivious neglect of structural cracks.Ignoring evidence of structural distress can be fatal to a building?s occupants during natural hazards. Since every house may not benefit from having a comprehensive structural engineering assessment, building occupants need a tool to inform them of a crack?s significance. This book describes typical cracks that I have observed in concrete and masonry buildings impacted by a diverse range of hazards, including: earthquakes, hurricanes, waves, floods, landslides, volcanoes, excessive gravity loads, foundation settlement and subsidence. It also includes idealised cracks of failed structures. This book is intended to benefit building contractors, owners, occupants, and maintenance personnel who may notice cracks and want to know their importance.

Book Desiccation Cracks and their Patterns

Download or read book Desiccation Cracks and their Patterns written by Lucas Goehring and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together basic ideas, classical theories, recent experimental and theoretical aspects, this book explains desiccation cracks from simple, easily-comprehensible cases to more complex, applied situations. The ideal team of authors, combining experimental and theoretical backgrounds, and with experience in both physical and earth sciences, discuss how the study of cracks can lead to the design of crack-resistant materials, as well as how cracks can be grown to generate patterned surfaces at the nano- and micro-scales. Important research and recent developments on tailoring desiccation cracks by different methods are covered, supported by straightforward, yet deep theoretical models. Intended for a broad readership spanning physics, materials science, and engineering to the geosciences, the book also includes additional reading especially for students engaged in pattern formation research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Simply put, the book is a blockbuster.” Stephen Lendman It's must reading to learn what schools to the highest levels never teach about the nation's most important document that lays out the fundamental law of the land in its Preamble, Seven Articles, Bill of Rights, and 17 other Amendments. Lundberg deconstructs it in depth, separating myth from reality about what he called "the great totempole of American society." What you think you know about the Constitution of the United States is probably false...even—and especially—if you are well educated. In 1968, a book appeared which told the story of the lords of wealth and their glittering clans. It was titled THE RICH AND THE SUPER-RICH. It has become a classic. Since then, Ferdinand Lundberg has devoted himself to research and writing on a subject not unrelated to the domains of wealth—the United States Constitution, that he found was material hitherto concealed from most readers and believers in the Constitution. What he concludes is that the Constitution is an unrestricted instrument of government that carries within it powers more vast than its citizens imagine.

Book Fracture Mechanics and Crack Growth

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics and Crack Growth written by Naman Recho and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent advances related to the following two topics: how mechanical fields close to material or geometrical singularities such as cracks can be determined; how failure criteria can be established according to the singularity degrees related to these discontinuities. Concerning the determination of mechanical fields close to a crack tip, the first part of the book presents most of the traditional methods in order to classify them into two major categories. The first is based on the stress field, such as the Airy function, and the second resolves the problem from functions related to displacement fields. Following this, a new method based on the Hamiltonian system is presented in great detail. Local and energetic approaches to fracture are used in order to determine the fracture parameters such as stress intensity factor and energy release rate. The second part of the book describes methodologies to establish the critical fracture loads and the crack growth criteria. Singular fields for homogeneous and non-homogeneous problems near crack tips, v-notches, interfaces, etc. associated with the crack initiation and propagation laws in elastic and elastic-plastic media, allow us to determine the basis of failure criteria. Each phenomenon studied is dealt with according to its conceptual and theoretical modeling, to its use in the criteria of fracture resistance; and finally to its implementation in terms of feasibility and numerical application. Contents 1. Introduction. Part 1: Stress Field Analysis Close to the Crack Tip 2. Review of Continuum Mechanics and the Behavior Laws. 3. Overview of Fracture Mechanics. 4. Fracture Mechanics. 5. Introduction to the Finite Element Analysis of Cracked Structures. Part 2: Crack Growth Criteria 6. Crack Propagation. 7. Crack Growth Prediction in Elements of Steel Structures Submitted to Fatigue. 8. Potential Use of Crack Propagation Laws in Fatigue Life Design.

Book excerpt: Revised edition. This title is as a wake-up call to take seriously the climate in which mental health professionals practice in which complaints and civil actions against psychotherapists and counsellors are on the increase and to sharpen assessment skills accordingly. It is also designed to help professionals to think about the "therapeutic frame" and what can happen to both the practitioner and the client when it is broken and finally to give voice to some colleagues who have been involved in the area of complaints in the hope that you and the organisations under whose codes of ethics you practice will take more of an interest in making those codes and frameworks more relevant to the intricacies of the therapeutic relationship. The message is simple: injuries that happen in relationships need to be addressed in relationships.
