Book Private Investment in Developing Countries

Download or read book Private Investment in Developing Countries written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1990-04-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the effects of several policy and other macro-economic variables on the ratio of private investment to GDP in developing countries. Using data for a sample of 23 developing countries over the period 1975-87, the econometric evidence indicates that the rate of private investment is positively related to the real growth rate of GDP, public sector investment, and to a lesser extent the level of per capita GDP, while it is negatively related to domestic inflation, the debt service ratio, the debt-to-GDP ratio, and high real interest rates. There is also some indication that all but the last of these variables had a greater impact before the onset of the debt crisis in 1982, while the debt-to-GDP ratio (a measure of a country’s debt overhang) has become more important since then.

Book Corporate Governance and Responsible Investment in Private Equity

Download or read book Corporate Governance and Responsible Investment in Private Equity written by Simon Witney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private equity-backed companies are ubiquitous and economically significant. Consequently, the corporate governance of these companies matters to all of us, and – not surprisingly – is coming under increasing scrutiny. Simon Witney, a practicing private equity lawyer, positions private equity portfolio companies within existing academic theory and examines the laws that apply to them in the UK. He analyses the actual governance frameworks that are put in place and identifies problems created by the legal rules – as well as the market's solutions to them. This book not only explains why these governance mechanisms are established, but also what they are expected to achieve. Witney suggests that private equity owners have both the incentives and the capability to focus on responsible investment practices. Good governance, he argues, is a critical success factor for the private equity industry.

Book The Macroeconomic Effects of Public Investment

Download or read book The Macroeconomic Effects of Public Investment written by Mr.Abdul Abiad and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides new evidence of the macroeconomic effects of public investment in advanced economies. Using public investment forecast errors to identify the causal effect of government investment in a sample of 17 OECD economies since 1985 and model simulations, the paper finds that increased public investment raises output, both in the short term and in the long term, crowds in private investment, and reduces unemployment. Several factors shape the macroeconomic effects of public investment. When there is economic slack and monetary accommodation, demand effects are stronger, and the public-debt-to-GDP ratio may actually decline. Public investment is also more effective in boosting output in countries with higher public investment efficiency and when it is financed by issuing debt.

Book Public and Private Investment and the Convergence of Per Capita Incomes in Developing Countries

Download or read book Public and Private Investment and the Convergence of Per Capita Incomes in Developing Countries written by Mohsin S. Khan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1993-06 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the extent to which there has been convergence in real per capita incomes across developing countries during the last two decades. In the analysis particular emphasis is placed on the separate roles played by private and public sector investment in determining both the extent and the speed of convergence. The paper also considers the importance of the stock of human capital, trade orientation, and foreign direct investment in the long-run growth process. Empirical tests are carried out for a large sample of 95 developing countries over the period 1970-90. The results provide support for the notion of differential effects of public and private investment on long-term growth, as well as for the convergence hypothesis.

Book Can Government Demand Stimulate Private Investment Evidence from U S Federal Procurement

Download or read book Can Government Demand Stimulate Private Investment Evidence from U S Federal Procurement written by Shafik Hebous and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the effects of federal purchases on firms’ investment using a novel panel dataset that combines federal procurement contracts in the United States with key financial firm-level information. We find that 1 dollar of federal spending increases firms’ capital investment by 7 to 11 cents. The average effect masks heterogeneity: Effects are stronger for firms that face financing constraints and they are close to 0 for unconstrained firms. In line with the financial accelerator model, our findings indicate that the effect of government purchases works through easing firms’ access to external borrowing. Furthermore, industry-level analysis suggests that that the increase in investment at the firm level translates into an industry-wide effect without crowding-out capital investment of other firms in the same industry.

Book Determining Factors of Private Investment

Download or read book Determining Factors of Private Investment written by Atif Salman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an ample amount of work on private investment for the cases of both developed and developing economies. Blejer and Khan (1984) study the investment function for developing countries using pooled data of 24 countries for the period 1971-1979. They find credit availability and infrastructural public investments are positively related to private investment. They observe that crowding-out phenomena works in case of noninfrastructural investment. As quoted by Saker (1993), behavior of private investment is quite different in developed and developing economies. Credit availability and government investment appear to be strong boosters of private investment in case of developing economies. Utilizing the Pakistani data set from FY 1974 to FY 1992, Saker (1993) concludes that private investment is positively correlated with output growth, private sector credit availability and government infrastructural investment. Oshikoya (1994) models private investment function for various middle-income and low-income African countries for the period 1971-1988. He finds that real output growth, real exchange rate, credit availability and government infrastructural investment are positively related to domestic private investment in studied African countries. Inflation and external debt servicing add to macroeconomic uncertainty and are, therefore negatively related to private investment.

In particular, each case study details the project cycle, from the scoping phase and determination of the initial amount of public sector investment, to implementation and subsequent leveraged private-sector funds. This manual analyzes rates of return on the investments and long-term financial sustainability. Regenerating Urban Land guides local governments to systematically identify the sequence of steps and tasks needed to develop a regeneration policy framework, with the participation of the private sector.
