Download or read book A Plan for Realizing the Perfection of Money written by Associate Professor of Political Science Charles Jones and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plan for Realizing the Perfection of Money: In Which It Is Demonstrated, That "Paper Is Capable of Being Made, a Much More Perfect, True, and Unvarying Standard of Value, Than It Is Possible That Either Gold on Silver Can Be" V. But any article of general consumption, to be used as money, would soon be found to be attended with great inconveni ences; being, for the most part, bulky, and of a perishable nature. These practical difficulties, would push men on another step in civilization; and they would look out for amoney, at least, not subject to the inconveniences they had already experienced; and especially, they would seek one that was portable, so that a large amount might be represented in a small compass: and again, it would be required to be so divisible, that they might have parts small enough, to represent their smallest transactions; and lastly, it would be very important that it should be something permanent, something which would not readily deteriorate by decay. These three qualities, vim - portability, divisibility, and durability, would be seen, to be essentially necessary to a good medium of exchange, such as is here contemplated; but these qualities would not be found combined, in any article of general consumption hence, man would be forced upon the resources of his own mind, to discover something which would answer the purpose; and we know, that some nations, hit upon the expedient of adopting sea shells for their money; choosing such as were rare, and of a small size: and here, be it observed, we see exhibited a good deal of philosophy, and the establishment of a really excellent kind of a money; a money, based upon exactly the same principle, as gold and silver money is, and one reallv better suited to the state of society when it was adopted, than gold and silver is now to ours! Book The Currency Specie Payments

Download or read book The Currency Specie Payments written by John Sherman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Currency, Specie Payments: Speech of Hon. John Sherman, of Ohio, in the United States Senate, January 16, 1874 All modern experience teaches the importance of the division of labor. Indeed that is the favorite tepic of every writer on political economy. Every man to his trade, and if the trade can be subdivided into many specialties, then every man to his specialty. I was in the celebrated manufactory of steel pens of Mr. Gillett, and saw that it required the labor of thirty men and women to contribute to the making of this implement. Each one was skillful in his part, and this part was perfectly done, and this subdivision of labor and skill gave increased wages and value to the work of each laborer, secured a fortune to the owners, and a perfect pen to the world. The same law which demands a division of labor is applied to professional and. Scientific pursuits. The law has many specialties. The honors of science are only won by those who devote their mental faculties to one branch of study. The same law extends to all leading produc tions, as cotton, wool, wheat, corn, and gold. Book Honest Money Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honest Money IN an article in the American Journal of Politics for July, 1893, I gave a brief state ment of the conclusions I had reached in an attempt to analyze the requirements of a perfect money. The limits of a magazine article prevented a full discussion of the subject; many points were left untouched, and all quotations from the works of other writers, in support of the brief arguments given, were of necessity omitted. As the course of events since the article referred to was written has more fully con firmed the conclusions stated therein, a desire to give the subject ampler treatment, which its importance seems to demand, has led to the writing of this little work. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
