Download or read book Rituals of Initiation and Consecration in Premodern Japan written by Fabio Rambelli and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In premodern Japan, legitimization of power and knowledge in various contexts was sanctioned by consecration rituals (kanjō) of Buddhist origin. This is the first book to address in a comprehensive way the multiple forms and aspects of these rituals also in relation to other Asian contexts. The multidisciplinary chapters in the book address the origins of these rituals in ancient Persia and India and their developments in China and Tibet, before discussing in depth their transformations in medieval Japan. In particular, kanjō rituals are examined from various perspectives: imperial ceremonies, Buddhist monastic rituals, vernacular religious forms (Shugendō mountain cults, Shinto lineages), rituals of bodily transformation involving sexual practice, and the performing arts: a history of these developments, descriptions of actual rituals, and reference to religious and intellectual arguments based on under-examined primary sources. No other book presents so many cases of kanjō in such depth and breadth. This book is relevant to readers interested in Buddhist studies, Japanese religions, the history of Japanese culture, and in the intersections between religious doctrines, rituals, legitimization, and performance.

Download or read book The Slaying of Meghanada written by Michael Madhusudan Datta and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The poem is rising into splendid popularity. Some say it is better than Milton-but that is all bosh-nothing can be better than Milton; many say it licks Kalidasa; I have no objection to that. I don't think it impossible to equal Virgil, Kalidasa, and Tasso." Michael Madhusudan Datta wrote this in a letter to a friend about his verse narrative, The Slaying of Meghanada (1861). The epic, a Bengali version of the Ramayana story in which Ravana, not Rama, is the hero, has become a classic of Indian literature. Datta lived in Bengal at the height of what is frequently called the Bengal Renaissance, a time so labeled for its reinvigoration and reconfiguration of the Hindu past and for the florescence of the literary arts. It was also a period when the Bengali city of Kolkata was a center of world trade-the second city of the British empire-and thus a site of cultural exchange between India and the West. Datta was the perfect embodiment of this time and place. The Slaying of Meghanada is deeply influenced by western epic tradition, and is sprinkled with nods to Homer, Milton, and Dante. Datta's deft intermingling of western and eastern literary traditions brought about a sea change in South Asian literature, and is generally considered to mark the dividing line between pre-modern and modern Bengali literature. Datta's masterpiece is now accessible to readers of English in Clinton Seely's elegant translation, which captures both the sense and the spirit of the original. The poem is supplemented by an extensive introduction, notes, and a glossary.
Download or read book Mahabharata written by David R. Slavitt and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within its 200,000 verse lines in Sanskrit the Mahabharata takes on many roles: epic poem, foundational text of Hinduism, and, more broadly, the engaging story of a dynastic struggle and the passing of an age when man and gods intermingled. David R. Slavitt’s sparkling new edition condenses the epic for the general reader. At its core, the Mahabharata is the story of the rivalry between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, two related noble families who are struggling for control of a kingdom in ancient northern India. Slavitt’s readable, plot-driven, single-volume account describes an arc from the conception and birth of Bhishma to that hero's death, while also introducing the four goals of life at the center of Hinduism: dharma (righteousness, morality, duty), artha (purpose), kāma (pleasure), and moksa (spiritual liberation). The Mahabharata is engaging, thrilling, funny, charming, and finally awesome, with a range in timbre from the impish naivete of fairy tales to the solemnity of our greatest epics, and this single-volume edition is the best introduction available.

Download or read book The Mah bh rata written by Chaturvedi Badrinath and published by Bright Sparks. This book was released on 2006 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a scholarly treatise on the subject of Indian philosophy and is also written by one of its foremost and most well-known proponents. Chaturvedi Badrinath shows that the Mahabharata is the most systematic inquiry into the human condition. Badrinath shows that the concerns of the Mahabharata are the concerns of everyday life––of dharma, artha, kama and moksha. This book dispels several false claims about what is today known as ‘Hinduism’ to show us how individual liberty and knowledge, freedom, equality, and the celebration of love, friendship and relationships are integral to the philosophy of the Mahabharata, because they are integral to human life. What sets this book apart from others is that Badrinath has used more than 500 Sanskrit shlokas, which he has translated himself to illustrate his arguments. Secondly, his approach to Hindu philosophy is one based in humanism, rather than in divisive politics.
Download or read book Mahabharata Juwel of the Poets written by Srikanta Sena and published by Atmarama, Karl-Heinz Degenhardt. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mahabharata - Juwel of the Poets is a three-part summary of the famous ancient, sacred book MAHABHARATA, the world's Greatest Epic. Part 1 consists of a retelling of the exciting main story of the Mahabharata, the story of the heroic sons of king Pandu. The second part contains ethical principles and the spiritual essence of the Mahabharata in hundreds of quotations from conversations and teachings of the sages who speak in the Mahabharata. Part 3 consists of 23 Instructive stories and fables told by the sages in the Mahabharata. Along with the Bhagavad-Gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam and Ramayana, the MAHABHARATA is a major work of Vedic literature. With over a hundred thousand verses, it is probably the world's largest epic. It was composed about 5000 years ago in Sanskrit by the great sage Vyasadeva, who also composed the four Vedas, the 18 Puranas, Vedanta-Sutra, Srimad-Bhagavatam and many other holy scriptures. The Mahabharata contains the entire history of the world from creation to destruction, as well as all the spiritual knowledge of the Vedas. The Mahabharata is called the fifth Veda. It paints a picture of a bygone culture that was wholly centred on the eternal values of the Vedas. The Mahābhārata is a multi-layered literary work of art. The exciting historical narrative of the lives of the five great Bharata heros, the Pāṇḍavas, constitutes its top level or framework of wisdom to be conveyed. It is told in the first part of this book. This Ebook comprises approx. 550 pages. It has Glossaries of Sanskrit Terms and Names and a Pronounciation Guide for the Sanskrit letters.
