A previous study in this field analyzed returns offered by founders and demanded by investors, resp., by means of a data set from kickstarter.com, a leading platform for reward-based crowdfunding. The present paper additionally looks at the realized returns from an ex post view. It does not present new empirical findings, but identifies problems and limitations in this field, and presents some suggestions for future research.

Book Timing the Provision of Product Information in Reward Based Crowdfunding

Download or read book Timing the Provision of Product Information in Reward Based Crowdfunding written by Yinbo Feng and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a crowdfunding campaign, customers are often uncertain about how much they like the product launched because the product description often lacks detailed information, in which case the product value for a customer is her expected valuation. When that information is provided, customers' valuations are realized and become more heterogeneous. We study a dynamic model of reward-based crowdfunding in which customers' arrivals follow a Poisson process. Upon arrival, a customer's pledging decision depends on her valuation of the product, which is determined by the product information observed at that time, and the estimated success rate of the campaign, which is modeled by using the rational expectation equilibrium framework. The creator faces a problem of deciding when to disclose the detailed information about the product to the customers during campaign. We characterize the optimal timing of disclosing detailed information for the creator if his objective is to maximize the success rate of the campaign. We find that it is optimal to disclose detailed product information at the very beginning if the pledging cost is sufficiently high or the market size is sufficiently small, and it is optimal to delay the disclosure otherwise. We also show that increasing the customers heterogeneity at a right time can benefit the creator. This result makes our work different from traditional advance selling theory (Shugan and Xie (2000)) which states that advance selling can benefit a seller by homogenizing heterogeneous buyers.

Book Rebate Rules in Reward Based Crowdfunding

Download or read book Rebate Rules in Reward Based Crowdfunding written by Fabian Gerstmeier and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the efficacy of rebates in reward-based crowdfunding, where a project is only realized when a funding goal is met, and only those who pledge at least a reservation price receive a reward. We propose and experimentally test two rebate rules against the all-or-nothing model. Firstly, we adapt the proportional rebate rule from threshold public good games to our reward-based setting. Secondly, we develop the novel bid-cap rule. Here, pledges must only be paid up to a cap, which is determined ex-post such that the provision point is exactly met. Theoretically, the bid-cap rule induces weakly less variance in payments compared with the proportional rebate rule. In our experiment, both rebate rules induce higher pledges and increase the project realization rate in comparison to the all-or-nothing model. Further, we can confirm that the variance of payments is lower under the bid-cap rule compared with the proportional rebate rule.

This book was released on 2015-02 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to take stock and systemize existing knowledge on crowdfunding while providing overview of the industry, its regulatory environment and advancing the insight into the role of crowdfunding in the startup lifecycle. It is adopting an exploratory and phenomenon-based approach which is deemed appropriate when investigating rather new phenomena. Furthermore, the research combines survey and interview methodologies to assess the opinion and real-world behavior of different stakeholders in crowdfunding marketplace and identify gaps requiring further academic consideration. Empirical data was gathered using multiple interactive web-based questionnaires distributed to different stakeholders and “informed general public” mainly through the social networks (Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter) and direct solicitation of entrepreneurial associations, networks and online communities. The study conducted relies on both qualitative and quantitative analysis in attempt to find data patterns useful in future research and establish some managerial and policymaker recommendations based on limited evidence collected. The work adds value to this field through a 3-fold contribution: Taking a look at crowdfunding through the prism of SWOT analysis of the practice itself and Porter’s 5 forces analysis of crowdfunding platforms industry. Providing evidence in favor of implementing various degrees of regulation based on different crowdfunding categories, using the Italian case of equity-based crowdfunding regulation as a model. Finally, it yields some interesting findings on relevance of crowdfunding in the venture startup while pointing out key motivators which make entrepreneurs consider this fundraising option. In addition, related policymaker/managerial implications are exposed and academic literature updated with reference to contemporary developments in this dynamic field.

The author presents a comprehensive theoretical, empirical and field-based work on crowdfunding in China. Adopting a new institutional economics approach, it maps and deciphers the origins and paths of informal finance that have led to internet finance and the rise of crowdfunding platforms. In addition, three case studies are analyzed and their implications for crowdfunding stakeholders in China are discussed.

Book Individual s Financial Investment Decision Making in Reward Based Crowdfunding

Download or read book Individual s Financial Investment Decision Making in Reward Based Crowdfunding written by Yasir Shahab and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper extends the work of Cecere et al. (Appl. Econ., 49(57): 5802-5813, 2017) and explores the antecedents of backers' decision to invest in projects from eight categories on a reward-based crowdfunding platform in China. We extract data from 2011 to 2016 from the pioneer Chinese reward-based crowdfunding site “Demohour”. Our empirical investigation using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) reveals that feedback score, social capital (followers on Weibo, project sharing on social media) and project quality (number of updates) are key motivating factors in investment decision and subsequently, project success or failure. Robustness tests also confirm the findings.

Book The Fundraising Reader

How can fundraisers deal with ethical dilemmas such as ‘tainted’ donors and money? Best practice and future trends are also covered, including the impact of new technologies and responding to demands for greater diversity, inclusion, and equity in fundraising teams. This Reader is for those who seek to further develop their own understanding of fundraising, and it provides an invaluable resource for academic courses and professional training.

Book Reward based Crowdfunding

Download or read book Reward based Crowdfunding written by Jue LIU and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the role and value of information disclosure in a reward-based crowdfunding campaign for a new product development project under quality uncertainty. The creator sets a funding target that is subject to a minimum capital requirement and prices for a leading backer and a following backer arriving in two sequential periods. The backers form a prior belief about the quality of the product and update their valuation according to their private signals before they decide whether to bid for the products. The leading backer's bid, if disclosed, may be used by the subsequent backer to infer the former's private signal. We identify two interacting effects that drive the bidding decisions and the profitability of the campaign: an observational learning effect driven by information disclosure and a targeting effect. When the target is relatively high, information disclosure can always benefit the creator. When the target is relatively low, information disclosure may hurt the creator. The optimal target level is always equal to the minimum capital requirement. We further extend the analysis to a setting with a forward-looking leading backer who may strategically wait and identify the conditions under which information disclosure can also increase the profitability of the campaign. Interestingly, to counteract the strategic delay, the optimal target can be set higher than the minimum capital requirement in the presence of information disclosure.

Book Adventure Finance

Download or read book Adventure Finance written by Aunnie Patton Power and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The venture capital model doesn’t work—at least not for 99% of startups and small businesses. In this 99% are a lot of companies with incredible potential: businesses headed by female founders and those from diverse racial backgrounds, organizations headquartered outside of venture capital hubs, and purpose-driven enterprises that are creating social and environmental impact alongside financial success. Counter to what the press-savvy venture capital world would have you believe, there are a lot of funding options out there for startups and small businesses. Adventure Finance is designed to help you understand some of these options, and walk you through real examples of how other founders and funders have put them to use. In simple, approachable language, the book breaks down the different types of funding options available from revenue-based financing to recoverable grants to redeemable equity to distributed ownership and more. Through a mix of storytelling and frameworks, based on a decade of research and experience in investing in early-stage companies, this book will give you the ability to determine how each of these structures can contribute to your own funding journey. The goal for this book is to shift the conversation about startup funding and help founders and funders widen the spectrum of “mainstream” investment options in order to make the venture financing world more inclusive and purpose-driven.
