Book excerpt: This thesis project explored parent education topics and involvement opportunities of interest to a group of fathers of young children. Eighteen fathers from of a private, college-based preschool program, serving campus and community families, with children from age 2 to age 5, participated. The goal was to uncover and develop resources for fathers with young children and examine effective strategies for the program to involve fathers. Using two exploratory pilot meetings, fathers identified several topics of interest and discussed their preferences for involvement in the preschool program. For example, the topic of greatest interest was how to support children's development of emotional regulation. The fathers also expressed interest in involvement opportunities such as ongoing meetings with other fathers, parenting meetings for all parents, and volunteering in their child's classroom. Fathers indicated that they were eager to viii be involved but need more information and support regarding their options. The fathers' ideas suggested a multi-pronged plan for supporting and engaging fathers. Father involvement initiatives include: a parenting workshop on supporting children's development of emotional regulation, a fatherhood group that meets several times throughout the year, a comprehensive survey of all fathers in the program, which alerts them to the full range of involvement opportunities, and a series of staff training sessions to build the staff's knowledge and skills in father engagement/involvement. The thesis project suggests father involvement approaches which can be implemented over the school year. Implications for early childhood programs and potential directions for future research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore and gain an in-depth understanding of how fathers are involved in their children's preschool education. Using a grounded theory approach, the study described and reported fathers' perceptions of being an involved father to their preschool children. A demographic survey and semi-structured interview questions were used to collect data from 14 participants in a midwestern state. The findings from this study affirm that fathers are involved with their children's preschool education both at home and in school. The findings from this study contribute to fatherhood research by exploring paternal involvement from fathers' direct perspectives. Policymakers, educators, teachers, and other school communities can use the findings from this study to guide their decisions on planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating fatherhood programs in their centers. Lastly, this study contributes to fatherhood studies by describing early father involvement in children's education from the perspective of the father.

Book excerpt: The major purposes of this study were to describe paternal attitudes toward fathering and parent education and to then explore the relationships among these attitudes and interests. Specifically, the study attempted to relate traditional/developmental attitudes of fathers to: (1) expressed interests in knowing more about child rearing; (2) willingness to participate in learning opportunities and (3) preferred methods of study. The study also investigated the relationships among selected demographic data and the variables represented in the major purpose. Subjects for the study were 57 fathers, all of whom had at least one child enrolled in one of three preschool programs located in Corvallis, Oregon. Data from these subjects consisted of responses to a series of three questionnaires: (1) Attitudes Toward Fathering Scale (Bigner, 1977); (2) Child Rearing Learning Interest Scale (Hawkins, 1974) and (3) a personal data questionnaire. Descriptive analyses of paternal attitudes toward fathering and parent education revealed that the fathers were highly developmental in their attitudes toward their role, expressed high interest in wanting to learn more about child rearing and willingness to participate in specific learning experiences, and had particular preferences for methods of study. Fathers in this study not only expressed a high degree of interest in wanting to learn more about child rearing and had preferences for particular methods of study, but they also expressed varying degrees of interest and a variety of preferred methods for various child rearing areas. These results are essentially in agreement with those of earlier studies. In order to describe more fully the relationship between attitudes toward fathering and interest in parent education correlation coefficients were established between traditional/developmental attitudes, learning interest and willingness to participate. The only significant relationship to appear was that between interest and willingness to participate (r = .40: p d".001). Those fathers reporting a high degree of interest tended also to report being very willing to participate in parent education activities. Investigation of the possible relationships existing between selected demographic variables and attitudes toward fathering, interest in parent education and willingness to participate in parent education also revealed only one significant relationship (traditional/developmental attitudes with race). This finding is somewhat suspect because of the high degree of homogeneity of the sample. In order to explore in more detail the relationship between traditional/ developmental attitudes toward fathering and interest in parent education three null hypotheses were developed. It was hypothesized that traditional/developmental attitudes were not related to: (1) degree of interest in wanting to know more about child rearing; (2) willingness to participate in learning experiences and (3) preferences for particular methods of study. In each case, none of the statistical results showed significance at the .05 level. On this basis none of the null hypotheses could be rejected. Varying degrees of a traditional/developmental orientation toward the role of the father appears to make little difference in attitudes toward parent education. Implications for parent educators were discussed, as were limitations of the study and suggestions for further research.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
