Book excerpt: When Arkady Petrovich comes home from college, his father finds his eager, naive son changed almost beyond recognition, for the impressionable Arkady has fallen under the powerful influence of the friend he has brought with him. A self-proclaimed nihilist, the ardent young Bazarov shocks Arkady's father by criticizing the landowning way of life and by his outspoken determination to sweep away traditional values of contemporary Russian society. Turgenev's depiction of the conflict between generations and their ideals stunned readers when Fathers and Sons was first published in 1862. But many could also sympathize with Arkady's fascination with its nihilist hero whose story vividly captures the hopes and regrets of a changing Russia.

Book From Russia With Love

Download or read book From Russia With Love written by Llewella Chapman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often hailed as the 'best' James Bond film, From Russia With Love (1963) is celebrated for its direction by Terence Young, memorable performances from Sean Connery in his second outing as 007, Pedro Armendáriz as Kerim, Lotte Lenya as the lesbian villain Colonel Rosa Klebb, and Robert Shaw as Red Grant, the sexually ambiguous SPECTRE assassin. And regardless of its place within the longest-running continuous film series in cinema history, it is also an outstanding example of the British spy thriller in its own right. Llewella Chapman's study of the iconic film pinpoints its place within the James Bond film franchise, and its significant cultural value to critics and fans as well as this film's important place within British cinema history more widely. Drawing on a broad range of archival sources, Chapman traces the film's development and production history, including its adaptation from Ian Fleming's source novel, as well as its reception and lasting impact. Chapman also considers the film's portrayal of gender politics, with its queer villains counterpoised with the heterosexual couple Bond and his Russian counterpart Tatiana Romanova, the context of Cold War politics, and the influence of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest (1959).

Book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish

Download or read book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish written by Katrien Dora Verveckken and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification is central to human experience (cf. Aristotle’s Organon): the most basic aspects of human life and reasoning involve quantity assessment. This study sheds lights on a highly frequent way to express quantification in Spanish, viz. the binominal quantifier (e.g. un aluviónN1 de llamadasN2 ‘a flood of calls’) which assesses the quantity of N2 in terms of N1. This volume offers a corpus-based, cognitive-functional analysis of binominal quantifiers (BQ) in Spanish. The first part is dedicated to the development of BQs and starts from the assumption that BQs are cross-linguistically involved in grammaticalization. This monograph frames the history of BQs in Spanish in terms of constructional levels of change and highlights the complex interplay between analogical thinking and conceptual persistence. The second part motivates both the ample variation in the paradigm of quantifying nouns and their combinatorial pattern by the very same mechanism of conceptually-driven analogy. The study thus yields an innovative functional model of BQs in Spanish, in synchrony and in diachrony, with major implications for reference grammars and theory building.

Download or read book The Star Series written by Vincent Havelund and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many people living on Earth who have come from a distant planet called Orbsey and others who have come home. The price for the return trip was all memory of their time on Orbsey, but even their technology can't fully eradicate all memories. So many experience small glimpses of what could be a dream of their past lives on an alien world, but they are afraid to speak of them, for fear of being ridiculed. But the hidden burden of their experience cannot be denied. Stolen from Earth and forced to serve on Orbsey for at least five years, these lost children of humanity struggle to rebuild their lives upon their return to Mother Earth. Taken for research purposes, they were the subjects of Orbsien studies on the very human predilection for violence. But despite the methodology, the motives were noble: the scientists of Orbsey want to find the cure for violence. But two thousand years of observation and research have failed. Now, two Orbsien students have been given a grant to travel back in time to do a full-time study on Earth. These young aliens take human wives and settle into Earth culture. When they devise a plan to return to Orbsey with their wives, their plans become complicated by temporal issues: can these women from Earth's past adjust to life in its present let alone the future on Orbsey? T hese students risk it all in the name of love proving that some things are universal after all.

Book The Super Natural

Download or read book The Super Natural written by Whitley Strieber and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of today's maverick authors on anomalous experience present a perception-altering and intellectually thrilling analysis of why the paranormal is real, but radically different from what is conventionally understood. Whitley Strieber (Communion) and Jeffrey J. Kripal (J. Newton Rayzor professor of religion at Rice University) team up on this unprecedented and intellectually vibrant new framing of inexplicable events and experiences. Rather than merely document the anomalous, these authors--one the man who popularized alien abduction and the other a renowned scholar and "renegade advocate for including the paranormal in religious studies" (The New York Times)--deliver a fast-paced and exhilarating study of why the supernatural is neither fantasy nor fiction but a vital and authentic aspect of life. Their suggestion? That all kinds of "impossible" things, from extra-dimensional beings to bilocation to bumps in the night, are not impossible at all: rather, they are a part of our natural world. But this natural world is immeasurably more weird, more wonderful, and probably more populated than we have so far imagined with our current categories and cultures, which are what really make these things seem "impossible." The Super Natural considers that the natural world is actually a "super natural world"--and all we have to do to see this is to change the lenses through which we are looking at it and the languages through which we are presently limiting it. In short: The extraordinary exists if we know how to look at and think about it.
