Book excerpt: In today's world, it can be difficult to maintain your faith. Those seeking a greater understanding of the Bible have numerous excellent theological commentaries available to them, but due to volume and depth, many of these are out of reach of laypeople. Others lose contact with the Bible, because it no longer seems relevant to life. They use a superficial knowledge of science and evolution to exclude God and faith from their experiences. The Layman's Commentary: Volume 7 - Epistles of Paul presents a passage bypassage explanation of the thirteen letters of Paul to the early churches. In this seventh volume, author John Devine considers the writings of the academic, theologian, specialist in the Old Testament Scriptures and apostle to the 'rest of the world' as they relate to effective everyday living. Paul's deep understanding of the work and teaching of Jesus are addressed explaining God's plan for a relationship with the individual and the means by which this was made possible by the death and resurrection of his Son. The expectation of eternal life and other important doctrines of the Christian worldview which have impacted people of all subsequent generations are highlighted and confirm that science and faith are complementary in giving purpose and meaning to life.

Book excerpt: This history of the origins and development of Christian denominations is in layman's language. Readers will not become bogged down in technical or archaic terms. Begin by reading about the Christian groups, denominations, that developed in the time between Jesus' crucifixion and the formal origins of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. Learn how the Roman empire came to accept Christianity as its religion, of the cooperation and struggles between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches and how that led to their separation. Read about how the Black Death, the Crusades, the struggles within the Roman Catholic Church led some church leaders, such as Martin Luther, to attempt to reform the church, and how those attempts led to The Reformation. That opened the door to England declaring that the Church of England, the Anglican Church is the true Christian church. John Calvin laid the ground work for what became the Presbyterian and the Reformed churches. Then came the Huguenots and the Walloons, and the Puritan-Pilgrims who came to America and evolved into such as the Congregationalists. Back in England the Quakers experienced persecution that encouraged them to move to America. John Wesley began what evolved into Methodism. The American Revolution caused American churches of English origin to separate from their English roots and to become such as the Episcopalians and the Methodists. Read about the history of the many denominations that have come into being in The United States. There are the numerous "Christian" churches, the Unitarians, Spiritualist churches, Mormons, Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science, Pentecostalism and many independent non-denominational churches. It is fascinating history, and all in layman's language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a wide range of philosophical issues in their connection with theism, including views of free will, ethical theories, theories of mind, naturalism, and karma-plus-reincarnation. In this clear and logical guide, C. Stephen Layman takes up eight important philosophical questions about God: Does God exist? Why does God permit evil? Why think God is good? Why is God hidden? What is God’s relationship to ethics? Is divine foreknowledge compatible with human free will? Do humans have souls? Does reincarnation provide the best explanation of suffering? Based on more than thirty years of experience in teaching undergraduates and in leading philosophical discussions related to God, Layman has arranged the text to deal with each of these eight questions in one or two chapters apiece. Many philosophical works take up questions about God, but the chapters of this book plunge the reader very quickly into the arguments relevant to each question. Layman presents the arguments cogently and simply, yet without oversimplifying the issues. The book emphasizes strengths and weaknesses of both theism and its metaphysical rivals. Readers will gain a clearer understanding of theism and naturalism, and of their sometimes surprising implications. The book can be used as a text in philosophy of religion and introductory philosophy courses. Professional philosophers will find significant, novel arguments in many of the chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The credential of the author is based upon the fact that he is a trained psychologist, a biologist and a scientist; and has been in management/business fields for many years, having been exposed in all aspects of commerce and finance. He has a Master degree in Industrial Psychology from the University of Sydney, Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in psychology from Australian National University and a major in Biology from RMIT. Was awarded the 'Elizabeth and Martin Summit Prize in Psychology', an annual award given to the most outstanding student in Psychology at Sydney University. He has been teaching in a university for several years and was involved in politics for some time, but voluntarily chose to pursue a different path because of the incompatible sets of values that are required against what he believed in. He has a background of Buddhist and Confucian upbringing and was converted to being a follower of Jesus as a Catholic. However, he had been battling with what the churches taught and his knowledge and understanding in the fields of biology and psychology, new discoveries of physical sciences in which he was trained, against the background of his upbringing in a culture that was homogenous and has survived for more than 5000 years of history and his life experiences in the modern commercial materialistic world culture. He believes in doing Gods work in whatever circumstances he was placed, to be guided by the principles of what he believed Jesus has taught in establishing a consistent logical framework that is universal and more holistic, the result of which is the writing of this book. One of his greatest gifts is his ability to analyze things logically and he has been a good debater when he was at school. He has thus put all his thoughts down, gathered from his training, life experiences and his wide exposure in the modern world environment to establish an overall consistent logical framework in understanding the meaning of life in the order of things; and the role religion plays in assisting each individuals to achieve the universal objective of a salvation and the conflicts that are generated as a result of different derivatives of history and culture of the world.
