Book excerpt: Internationally published author TIM ROCK has made numerous trips to Tonga and shares his insights into how to enjoy swimming with humpback whales. Humpbacks are magnificent Pacific nomads that migrate each year between Antarctica and Tonga, which is one of the few places in the world where visitors can legally swim with these amazing giants of the sea. The stunning 170 islands of Tonga offer adventure, culture, wonderful nature and of course, marine mammals galore. Humpbacks are one of the most surface-active whales in the world and sometimes launch themselves from the sea in spectacular breaches. This book is a bit of a new departure for author Tim Rock, who usually produces guides to famous scuba diving destinations. While Tonga does have some amazing scuba diving, in this book, Rock concentrates on viewing and interacting with humpback whales and the things one might experience during a Tonga whale season. This unique offering looks at many aspects of Tongan humpback whale behavior, from their great annual migration to life among the "Happy Isles". He has tips for above and underwater whale photography and tells fascinating tales of his personal experiences while swimming with humpbacks and folk he has encountered in the islands. See over 175 amazing images of humpback whale behavior, heat runs, mating sessions, mother and calf interactions, Tongan life and the beauty of the islands. This full color book explores each one of Tonga's island groups from south to north.

Book Across Species and Cultures

  • Author : Ryan Tucker Jones

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other locale, the Pacific Ocean has been the meeting place between humans and whales. From Indigenous Pacific peoples who built lives and cosmologies around whales, to Euro-American whalers who descended upon the Pacific during the nineteenth century, and to the new forms of human-cetacean partnerships that have emerged from the late twentieth century, the relationship between these two species has been central to the ocean’s history. Across Species and Cultures: Whales, Humans, and Pacific Worlds offers for the first time a critical, wide-ranging geographical and temporal look at the varieties of whale histories in the Pacific. The essay contributors, hailing from around the Pacific, present a wealth of fascinating stories while breaking new methodological ground in environmental history, women’s history, animal studies, and Indigenous ontologies. In the process they reveal previously hidden aspects of the story of Pacific whaling, including the contributions of Indigenous people to capitalist whaling, the industry’s exceptionally far-reaching spread, and its overlooked second life as a global, industrial slaughter in the twentieth century. While pointing to striking continuities in whaling histories around the Pacific, Across Species and Cultures also reveals deep tensions: between environmentalists and Indigenous peoples, between ideas and realities, and between the North and South Pacific. The book delves in unprecedented ways into the lives and histories of whales themselves. Despite the worst ravages of commercial and industrial whaling, whales survived two centuries of mass killing in the Pacific. Their perseverance continues to nourish many human communities around and in the Pacific Ocean where they are hunted as commodities, regarded as signs of wealth and power, act as providers and protectors, but are also ancestors, providing a bridge between human and nonhuman worlds.

Book A Whaler at Twilight

Download or read book A Whaler at Twilight written by Alexander R. Brash and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled at the bottom of an old leather trunk for well over a century lay a forgotten manuscript—a long-lost story the author's great-great-grandson has now brought to life. At the heart of A Whaler at Twilight is the true account of an American whaler who embarked on a harrowing adventure in the South Pacific during the mid-nineteenth century in search of absolution and redemption. After the deaths of his parents, young Robert Armstrong lived with a successful uncle—a well-respected Methodist shopkeeper in bustling 1840s Baltimore—and attended the nation’s first dental school. But Armstrong threw his future away, drinking himself into oblivion. Devoured by guilt and shame, in December 1849 he sold his dental instruments, his watch, and all other possessions and signed on for a whaling voyage departing from New Bedford. Decades later, Armstrong wrote an autobiographical account based on his travel logs, chronicling his thrilling, gritty experiences during his ten years overseas. His memoirs describe his encounters with other whalers, beachcombers, Peruvian villagers, Pacific Islanders, Maori warriors in New Zealand, cannibals on Fiji, and the impacts of American expansionism. He also recounted his struggles with drink, his quest for God, and his own redemption. Armstrong’s gripping personal account is bookended by thoroughly researched contextual background compiled by Alexander Brash, a noted professional conservationist. Brash fills out Armstrong’s intimate and timeless tale by shedding further light on whaling and its impacts, his ancestor’s religious milieu, and the importance of marine conservation today. A Whaler at Twilight is a fascinating dive into both human morality and American history.

Book Movement Ecology of Humpback Whales in the South Pacific

Download or read book Movement Ecology of Humpback Whales in the South Pacific written by Leena Riekkola and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determining the distribution, movements and habitat use of animals is fundamental to understanding their ecology and the development of effective conservation measures. However, studying animals that migrate thousands of kilometres and inhabit remote and inaccessible areas is extremely difficult, especially in the marine environment. The Oceania humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) population has been slow to recover from the effects of commercial whaling, and our understanding of what may influence this slow recovery has been limited by a lack of knowledge about the whales outside of their tropical breeding grounds. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the migratory movements, patterns of Antarctic feeding ground habitat use and energetics of Oceania humpback whales as they migrated from the South Pacific to the Southern Ocean. Satellite tags were deployed on 25 humpback whales on their southern migration past the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, in September and October 2015. Photo-identification and genetic data were collected to assign breeding ground origins and to determine the pregnancy rate and age-profile of the population. The whales’ migratory paths and behavioural states were investigated by applying a hierarchical state-space model to the satellite telemetry data. These data were used in linear mixed-effect models to elucidate ecological relationships between whale behaviour and the environment within the remote Southern Ocean feeding grounds. The tag data, and data from two whales tagged in east Australia, were also used to inform a bioenergetic model to estimate the relative energetic cost of different migratory routes and distances. The Kermadec Islands were an important aggregation point for Oceania’s humpback whales from a range of breeding grounds spanning ~3,500 km of ocean, almost the entire breeding ground range, as they migrated south to their Southern Ocean summer feeding grounds. The age profile of the whales (mean = 14 years) and a high (57%) pregnancy rate indicated a recovering population. The whales migrated to two key feeding areas, the Ross Sea and the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas (~2,000 km apart), the choice of which was influenced by the presence of a calf, as mothers with calves migrated a shorter distance to the Ross Sea region. There were marked differences in the environmental features between the two areas (e.g. oceanic vs near continental shelf) and consequently the whales used these areas differently. Overall, time lagged ice-edge dynamics were identified as a key environmental feature influencing the whales’ foraging behaviour, along with season and sea surface height. Whales with the longest migration distance migrated the fastest (97 km/day vs71 km/day) and had the highest cost of transport, but this was offset by energy savings in terms of daily maintenance costs by using 11% fewer days to complete the migration, suggesting that migration distance alone is not a limiting factor to population recovery. Whilst there is no doubt that a complex set of variables is affecting the Oceania humpback whale population recovery, the findings of this thesis have improved our understanding of the whales and their movement ecology once they depart from their breeding grounds. Furthermore, understanding the movement patterns and habitat use of this large predator also improves our knowledge of the remote Southern Ocean ecosystem and the changes occurring within it as a result of climate change. With such a wide geographic longitudinal range of feeding grounds (~4,000 km span) behavioural plasticity may play a critical role in the whales’ ability to adapt to the environmental changes, therefore affecting the species’ future recovery. This work further highlights the value of bio-logging in providing opportunities to advance ecological research.
