Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rehabilitation of Rivers Principles and Implementation Edited by Louise C. de Waal Division of Environmental and Analytical Sciences, University of Wolverhampton, UK Andrew R. G. Large Department of Geography, University of Newcastle, UK and P. Max Wade Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, UK River rehabilitation has become an issue at the top of the agenda for water authorities and river managers in many countries throughout the world. This challenging topic involves a wide range of themes, many of which are brought together in this volume. They concern planning strategy, implementation and project appraisal for a number of different types of river systems including upland, lowland and urban rivers. Topic areas addressed include hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and economics as, to be successful, rehabilitation of freshwaters must incorporate all of these subjects within a holistic framework. This volume covers a wide range of countries, provides comprehensive and integrated coverage of factors concerning river rehabilitation and encompasses policy, planning and implementation. As such, the text will have a lasting reference value and practical application. Rehabilitation of Rivers combines prescriptive, analytical and reviewing contributions, covering a wide range of case studies from Britain, continental Europe, the USA, Australia and Japan. It also examines strategic issues such as catchment planning and integrated application of ecology and engineering in river rehabilitation. This book will be an important text for all water authorities and river managers as well as hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists and nature conservationists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of ecology is replete with intellectual and political challenges, many of pressing concern to the future of our planet. Solutions to these issues require more than the traditional ecological sciences have offered. Effective linkages must be forged between all spheres of scientific inquiry and must include social, political and economic dimensions. Frontiers in Ecology: Building the Links addresses the future of the ecological and environmental sciences. It takes stock of what we have learnt and where we are heading. Inter-disciplinary linkages have been avoided by many ecologists, but increasingly they cannot be ignored as we focus on the role of ecology in the new millennium.

Book World Atlas of Marine Fishes

Download or read book World Atlas of Marine Fishes written by Rudie Herman Kuiter and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 6000 photographs of marine fishes this book sets a new benchmark for their identification. It provides the greatest possible coverage and is aimed primarily to assist people interested in marine fishes and their scientific names or classification. Presented here are the fishes one is likely to see when diving or snorkeling in the sea, as well as those that are traded in the aquarium industry. This World Atlas includes both tropical and temperate fishes. Depending on the size and popularity of the groups or families, introductions to these provide general information, distribution and habitat, number of species, interesting facts on behavior and aquarium suitability. In the case of very large families like wrasses, damsels or gobies, separate introductions may be dedicated to each distinctive group or subfamily. The greatest possible number of photographs is used on a page, but in sizes that clearly identify the fish. Variable species may be illustrated with more than one picture. In all, included are some 4,200 species. This is an invaluable reference book for the great variety of marine fishes found in the world's seas. As such it addresses all fish enthusiasts - divers, snorkelers, fish watchers, fisherman, reef surveyors, aquarists, ichthyologists and bio-geographers.

Book Tropical Timbers of the World

Download or read book Tropical Timbers of the World written by Martin Chudnoff and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades U.S. lumber imports from the tropics have increased fourfold. Plywood trade, mostly from Asian sources, has soared forty-fold and now equals our domestic production. Log imports, though, have decreased drastically from about 100 million board feet (log scale) in the 1950's to 30 million currently. Much of the world timber trade now is in the form of processed material. Many more tropical wood species and species groupings are being made available to U.S. processors. Most of these have been well known for many years on the European markets. This interest in supplemental supplies from overseas is in both softwoods and hardwoods. An extensive foreign literature has described the properties and uses of tropical woods, but much of it is no longer readily available. In this country the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, over the years, issued 'Information Leaflets' or 'Foreign Wood Series' reports on some species of importance. But many of these are now out of print. The most recent comprehensive document, 'Properties of Imported Tropical Woods, ' contained a description of about 100 tropical genera.
