Book Remote Identification of Wetlands in Mahoning and Trumbull County Ohio

Download or read book Remote Identification of Wetlands in Mahoning and Trumbull County Ohio written by Bethaney L. Krzys and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mahoning and Trumbull County, Ohio has an abundance of temporarily flooded, temporarily saturated, or seasonally flooded wet meadows, scrub/shrub, and forested roadside wetlands which are difficult to identify remotely but critical for resource management. This research evaluated several methods of wetland identification and combined the most accurate to produce a better method of remote wetland identification. Techniques evaluated include: visual interpretations of aerial and satellite images, satellite image classifications and GIS prediction. A visual interpretation was performed on: black and white and color aerial photographs; true color, near infrared, and mid infrared Landsat 7 ETM+ images; and a tassel cap transformation of Landsat 7 ETM+ images. A supervised and an unsupervised classification were performed on Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery. GIS was used to predict wetland location based on factors of slope, soil type, water proximity, and National and Ohio Wetland Inventory maps. The methods were evaluated for accuracy using field verified wetland maps. All of the methods had difficulty in identifying roadside wetlands, but hydric soil data and color aerial interpretations proved the most successful.

  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2002-10-10
  • ISBN : 0309082951
  • Pages : 449 pages

Download or read book Riparian Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment

Download or read book Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment written by Stephanie Fraser and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biological, radiological, chemical and physical traits of water are known as water quality. It is a measure of the water condition related to the requirements of biotic species and to human need. The health of ecosystems, safety of human contact, and drinking water are the most common standards used to measure water quality. Water quality parameters can be categorized into human consumption, environmental water quality, and industrial and domestic use. The measurement of water quality includes the process of sample collection, chemical analysis, real-time monitoring and testing in response to natural disasters. Various environmental indicators such as physical, chemical and biological indicators are also observed and used for the monitoring of water quality. This book explores all the important aspects of water quality in the present day scenario. It elucidates new techniques and their applications in a multidisciplinary manner. It will prove to be immensely beneficial to students and researchers in this field.
