Book excerpt: The world faces a ‘perfect storm’ of social and ecological stresses, including climate change, habitat loss, resource degradation and social, economic and cultural change. In order to cope with these, communities are struggling to transition to sustainable ways of living that improve well-being and increase resilience. This book demonstrates how communities in both developed and developing countries are already taking action to maintain or build resilient and sustainable lifestyles. These communities, here designated as ‘Ecocultures’, are exemplars of the art and science of sustainable living. Though they form a diverse group, they organise themselves around several common organising principles including an ethic of care for nature, a respect for community, high ecological knowledge, and a desire to maintain and improve personal and social wellbeing. Case studies from both developed and developing countries including Australia, Brazil, Finland, Greenland, India, Indonesia, South Africa, UK and USA, show how, based on these principles, communities have been able to increase social, ecological and personal wellbeing and resilience. They also address how other more mainstream communities are beginning to transition to more sustainable, resilient alternatives. Book excerpt: The Traditional Owners of the Wet Tropics Natural Resource Management region have adopted a unique approach to ensure that their interests and aspirations are considered in the new, Australia-wide Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) funded regional arrangements for integrated natural resource management (NRM). Dissatisfied with the engagement process associated with the development of the Wet Tropics Regional NRM Plan, Traditional Owners made a collective decision in 2002 to develop their own Wet Tropics Cultural and Natural Resource Management Plan (Aboriginal Plan). In doing so, they envisioned that the Aboriginal Plan would inform the content and direction of the Wet Tropics Regional NRM Plan and, in itself, constitute a groundbreaking vision for caring for country and culture in a holistic sense. The Aboriginal Plan took over three years to develop, commencing with the first Traditional Owner regional workshop held in March 2002 to discuss Indigenous involvement in NHT 2. Indigenous groups were largely excluded from the planning process in the first phase of the NHT program (1997-2001), and consequently only a handful of Aboriginal communities Australia-wide received funding support for NRM projects. Determined to rectify this state of Indigenous marginalisation in what is arguably a multi-billion dollar, nation-wide experiment in environmental management and social change, Traditional Owners, government and non-government organisations in the Wet Tropics region attended numerous workshops, meetings and presentations to develop an Aboriginal Plan.

It identifies the main types of planning problems and details a 'model' planning process that can be usefully applied to resolve them. Several theoretical and practical approaches to buffering environmentally sensitive areas are evaluated and a classification of existing approaches is detailed. Case studies are included to illustrate and test some of these approaches. The book concludes by recommending that integrated buffer zone planning should become a standard tool in real-life environmental planning and management.
