Download or read book Post Roads Iron Horses written by Richard DeLuca and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating history of turnpikes, steamboats, canals, railroads, and trolleys in Connecticut Post Roads & Iron Horses is the first book to look in detail at the turnpikes, steamboats, canals, railroads, and trolleys (street railroads) that helped define Connecticut and shape New England. Advances in transportation technology during the nineteenth century transformed the Constitution State from a rough network of colonial towns to an industrial powerhouse of the Gilded Age. From the race to build the Farmington Canal to the shift from water to rail transport, historian and transportation engineer Richard DeLuca gives us engaging stories and traces the significant themes that emerge as American innovators and financiers, lawyers and legislators, struggle to control the movement of passengers and goods in southern New England. The book contains over fifty historical images and maps, and provides an excellent point of view from which to interpret the history of New England as a whole. This is an indispensable reference book for those interested in Connecticut history and a great gift for transportation buffs of all kinds.

Download or read book Brockway and Little Toby Valley written by John Keith and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brockway, originally called Brockwayville until the name was shortened in 1925, is named after the Brockway family pioneers who settled near the southern bend of Little Toby Creek in 1822. The Brockways were followed by several other settlers, including the Father of Brockway, Dr. Asaph M. Clarke, who laid out the town in 1836. Farming and lumbering were the original industries, but by 1883, coal mining had brought in the railroads. Railroads introduced more industry, the most famous being the Brockwayville Machine Bottle Company in 1907. Through images from the Brockway Area Historical Society, Brockway and Little Toby Valley chronicles the development of this industrious community.

Book excerpt: Patriots & Parasites, completed just days before Smuts's unexpected death in 2016, is her account of the momentous period in South African history known as the Transition Era, through the lens of her 25-year career as a key opposition MP and a respected legislator. With ambitious breadth and rare insight, she examines: The arduous but exhilarating work of writing the Constitution and the Bill of Rights; The great experiment in catharsis that was the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; The reinvigoration of racial polarisation under the Mbeki administration, and the slow burn of resentment that is coming to a head among the next generation (as manifested in the #RhodesMustFall campaign); The entrenchment of cronyism under Zuma, and the fight to protect the crucial balance of accountability enshrined in the freedom of the media and the independence of the judiciary.
