Book Canadian Warbird Survivors

Download or read book Canadian Warbird Survivors written by Harold A. Skaarup and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a handbook on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft preserved in Canada. The majority of the Canadian Warbird and War Prize Survivors are on display within a significant number of aviation museums. Many others are displayed as "gate guards" on or near a number of Canadian and Allied Armed Forces Bases and installations. There are also a few in the hands of private owners and collectors that have been restored to flying status. These include a number of foreign warbird survivors that were brought back to Canada as War Prizes. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations such as the Canadian Aviation Preservation Association (CAPA) have done tremendous work in preserving military and civilian aircraft that have been a major part of Canada's aviation heritage. A few of these aircraft are illustrated in this book, along with a short description of the aircraft flown by Canadian servicemen and women. The aircraft are listed alphabetically, along with a city or museum location, the manufacturer, aircraft serial number and call sign where known. Canadian Warbird and War Prize Survivors is part of a series on aircraft used by the Canadian Forces throughout its history.

Book And Harmony Abound

Download or read book And Harmony Abound written by Keith William Kinder and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morley Calvert’s Suite from the Monteregian Hills is cherished by brass players worldwide and performed hundreds of times annually, making Calvert perhaps the most performed Canadian composer outside the country. Yet little is known about Calvert beyond that piece. And Harmony Abound is a thoughtful and in-depth study of a remarkably accomplished composer, conductor, and educator. Calvert made his living teaching music, but he was no ordinary high school music teacher. He was deeply committed to composing and completed some ninety works for brass ensembles, concert bands, choirs, and orchestras, while engaged in music making in the communities in which he lived. Keith Kinder traces Calvert’s life story from his birth in Brantford, Ontario, in 1928 through his youth and career in Montreal, his musical involvement with the Salvation Army, his success with the famous Central Collegiate band of Barrie, Ontario, his retirement years, and his unexpected passing in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1991. Uncovering Calvert’s oeuvre by analyzing representative arrangements, Kinder also documents the complete catalogue of Calvert’s works, bringing to light many unpublished compositions that would otherwise be lost to performers. And Harmony Abound is a compelling picture of Morley Calvert’s contribution to musical composition, education, and the cultural fabric, preserving a vital strand of the Canadian musical tapestry.

Download or read book Meeting of the People written by Roderick MacLeod and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-06-03 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Meeting of the People Roderick MacLeod and Mary Anne Poutanen look at the Protestant public education system and the communities that established, and were served by, its schools, from the origins of public education in 1801 to the dissolution of confessional school boards in 1998. They focus on key issues such as class, ethnicity, religion, gender, health and welfare, patriotism, and the nature of local administration, bringing to life the people who attempted to establish and maintain schools and considering relationships between school trustees, parents, teachers, and the wider public. Their analysis shows that communities recognized the importance of providing schooling, despite what were often bleak circumstances. The authors show that Protestant families often had to make a difficult choice between supporting better educational facilities in a central place far away or encouraging the survival of the local community through maintaining one of its key institutions, the local school. They explore the ambiguous nature of Protestant education, at times understood as schooling reserved for a religious minority and at others as a liberal approach similar to public schooling across North America. The Protestant community, begun as a British element within a small colony, has developed into a diverse array of people from across the religious spectrum, periodically redefining itself to meet the needs of a changing Quebec society.

Book Shakespeare in Quebec

Download or read book Shakespeare in Quebec written by Jennifer Drouin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shakespeare in Québec, Jennifer Drouin analyses representations of nation and gender in Shakespearean adaptations written in Québec since the Quiet Revolution. Using postcolonial and gender theory, Drouin traces the evolution of discourses of nation and gender in Québec from the Conquest of New France to the present, and she elaborates a theory of adaptation specific to Shakespeare studies. Drouin’s book explains why Québécois playwrights seem so obsessed with rewriting “le grand Will,” what changes they make to the Shakespearean text, and how the differences between Shakespeare and the adaptations engage the nationalist, feminist, and queer concerns of Québec society. Close readings from ten plays investigate the radical changes to content that allowed Québécois playwrights to advocate for political change and contribute to the hot debates of the Quiet Revolution, the 1970 October Crisis, the 1980 and 1995 referenda, the rise of feminism, and the emergence of AIDS. Drouin reveals not only how Shakespeare has been adapted in Québec but also how Québécois adaptations have evolved in response to changes in the political climate. As a critical analysis in English of rich but largely ignored French plays, Shakespeare in Québec bridges Canada’s “two solitudes.”

Download or read book Scott Brandtner Eveleigh Webber written by Esther Trépanier and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four artists who are today relatively or almost entirely unknown – one woman and three men – nevertheless played a part in the aesthetic upheavals that led to abstraction in 1940s Montreal. Very active in the art milieu throughout the decade, Marian Dale Scott, Fritz Brandtner, Henry Eveleigh, and Gordon Webber captured the attention of critics of the time, who employed the term “abstract art” to describe both non-objective works and bold formal explorations that retained some reference to visible reality. An examination of these artists’ practices reveals a remarkable openness to international contemporary art trends – French, German, British, and American. Their work and its critical reception conjure a complex picture of the debates on abstraction that took place in Montreal during the 1940s, so often reduced to the controversies surrounding the emergence of the Automatiste movement. The artistic innovations of Paul-Émile Borduas and his group and the radical tone of their 1948 manifesto Refus global cemented their status as Quebec’s abstract avant-garde but also had the effect of eclipsing other visions of abstraction being explored during the same period. This book reinstates the oeuvres of these forgotten protagonists in the narrative of abstract art, illustrating how their practices encompassed a variety of themes: emotion, science, human experience in the broadest sense – but also, as the Second World War unfolded, the violence that marked their era.
