Book John Francis Bentley

Download or read book John Francis Bentley written by Peter Howell and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of John Francis Bentley (1839-1902), best known as architect of Westminster Cathedral, since his daughter Winefride de l'Hôpital's Westminster Cathedral and its Architect (1919). Bentley was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, and went to London to work in the office of Henry Clutton, a distinguished High Victorian architect who became a Roman Catholic in 1856. Bentley also converted, and, after setting up his own practice in 1860, came to be widely recognised as the best Catholic architect of his time. He built comparatively few complete churches, but did extensive work in adding to and furnishing other architects' churches. He had remarkable skill in the design of woodwork, metalwork, stained glass, and organ cases, all of which are covered in the book. His finest parish church is Holy Rood, Watford, but the climax of his career was the commission in 1894 to design Westminster Cathedral, which was almost complete when he died in 1902.

This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westminster Cathedral and Its Architect, Vol. 2 of 2 Charles Bentley, born in 1805, seems to have been intended for the law, and spent part of his earliest manhood in the offices of two local solicitors. The idea Of qualifying for this profession was, however, early abandoned, and, becoming a burgess of his town, we find him embarked on the more immediately profitable vocation of a wine-merchant. Whether he inherited the business, or whether it was founded and built up by his own energy and enterprise the writer does not know; but it is certain that, prospering sufficiently to settle in life while yet very young, he married Ann Bacchus, a year his senior, some time in 1826.
