Book Westminster Abbey The Chapel of St Edmund

Download or read book Westminster Abbey The Chapel of St Edmund written by Tony Willoughby and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chapel of St Edmund is one of the last chapels on the visitor route around the Abbey and does not feature on the Audio Guide. It is easy to pass by without entering. Indeed, it is probably the least visited of all the major chapels open to the public. At this stage of a tour most visitors will be keen to take in Poets’ Corner and the not-to-be-missed Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries. Nonetheless, the Chapel contains an interesting collection of ‘residents’, the first arrival being King Henry III’s half-brother, William de Valence in 1296 and the last being Lord Lytton, the popular Victorian novelist, who died in 1837. The Dean of the time thought it appropriate that he be buried here alongside Sir Humphrey Bourchier, rather than in the South Transept with Charles Dickens and the other novelists, because Sir Humphrey, a casualty of the Wars of the Roses, featured as a character in one of Lytton’s novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gargoyles are an architectural feature designed to throw rainwater clear of the walls of a building. Widely used on medieval churches, these water spouts were often richly decorated, and fashioned as serpents' heads and other fanciful shapes. Today, the term gargoyle is also popularly applied to any carved decorative head or creature high up on a building and this book is an exploration of all of these enchanting features. Written by an academic and stonecarver, it is the perfect introduction to this fascinating subject. Gargoyles aims to provide a concise introduction to the stone carvings often found on religious and secular buildings in Britain from the medieval period to the modern. It will explore the typical imagery, some of the theories put forward to explain them, as well as consider the carvings within their architectural and social contexts. Incorporating recent and current research, the book will nevertheless be accessible to the general reader.

Book excerpt: What buried secret lies beneath the stones of one of England's greatest former churches and shrines? The ruins of the Benedictine Abbey of Bury St Edmunds are a memorial to the largest Romanesque church ever built. This Suffolk market town is now a quiet place, out of the way, eclipsed by its more famous neighbour Cambridge. But present obscurity may conceal a find as significant as the emergence from beneath a Leicester car-park of the remains of Richard III. For Bury, as Francis Young now reveals, is the probable site of the body – placed in an 'iron chest' but lost during the Dissolution of the Monasteries – of Edmund: martyred monarch of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia and, well before St George, England's first patron saint. After the king was slain by marauding Vikings in the ninth century, the legend which grew up around his murder led to the foundation in Bury of one of the pre-eminent shrines of Christendom. In showing how Edmund became the pivotal figure around whom Saxons, Danes and Normans all rallied, the author points to the imminent rediscovery of the ruler who created England.

Book Black Plaques London

  • Author : John Ambrose Hide
  • Publisher : The History Press
  • Release : 2019-05-15
  • ISBN : 0750991178
  • Pages : 412 pages

Download or read book Black Plaques London written by John Ambrose Hide and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Plaques are not to be found proudly mounted on a wall – and for good reason. What with their commemoration of a brutal execution outside Westminster Abbey, the selling of sex toys in St James's Park and an intruder at Buckingham Palace with Royal undergarments stuffed down his trousers, this is not sort of historical subject matter that authorities choose to grace a building's facade or depict on a visitor information board. In fact, many might hope that such indecorous and inconvenient episodes remain quietly overlooked. But this book jogs such artful lapses of memory and at more than one hundred locations across London, Black Plaques lift the carefully placed rug to discover an unsightly, but strangely beckoning, stain.
