Book An Evaluation of Cone and Seed Insects in Selected Seed Production Areas in Region 1 Progress Report II

Download or read book An Evaluation of Cone and Seed Insects in Selected Seed Production Areas in Region 1 Progress Report II written by Jerald E. Dewey and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect damage was extensive to Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, western white pine, and western larch cones at most seed production areas surveyed in 1979. From 70 to 100 percent of the cones from several collecting periods were injured. Moderate damage (40-70 percent of cones injured) occurred to Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, western larch, and western white pine from a few areas. Light damage (less than 40 percent) occurred on western white pine cones from a few seed production areas, and to all lodgepole pine and western hemlock cones collected. The primary insect species observed were western spruce budworm on Douglas-fir and western larch; midges on Douglas-fir, western larch, ponderosa pine, and lodgepole pine; cone worms on Douglas-fir, western larch, and ponderosa pine; and the Douglas-fir cone moth on Douglas-fir.

Book excerpt: An evaluation was made in 21 seed production areas and 1 seed orchard in Region 1 to identify the primary insect pests and to assess amount of injury caused. Cones from Douglas-fir, grand fir, western larch, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and western white pine were collected periodically and examined. The primary insect species observed were western spruce budworm on Douglas-fir, grand fir, and western larch; midges on Douglas fir, grand fir, western larch, ponderosa pine, and lodgepole pine; coneworms on Douglas-fir, grand fir, western larch, and ponderosa pine; and the Douglas-fir cone moth on Douglas-fir.

Book Maturation of Western Larch Cones and Seeds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maturation of Western Larch Cones and Seeds Classic Reprint written by Raymond C Shearer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maturation of Western Larch Cones and Seeds Weekly cone collections from late July through September 1964 and 1965, and irregular collections in 1966 and 1967 were used to evaluate specific gravity and moisture content as indices of cone maturity. Although both indices decreased with advancing cone maturity, neither index gave a firm indication of seed maturity, but they did predict when cones would open. The ratio of embryo length to embryo cavity length gave the best estimate of seed maturity in 1964. Cones on a given tree all Open within a short period of time, but the opening of cones among individual trees within a stand may vary greatly. Larch cone collections can begin in mid-august; if cones are stored under well-ventilated conditions for several weeks before seeds are extracted, viability remains high.
