This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Lancet and Hospital Reporter, 1848, Vol. 2 All facts which tend to enlarge the sphere of our knowledge, with te gard to the utility or application'of medicines in the cure of diseases, are at all times valuable to the profession. It frequently occurs, that a medicine is long in use, {or particular purposes, and practitioners ac customed to regard it as beneficial only within the limits to which previous information has confined its use, have never thought of ex tending it to diseases in which it has never been recommended. Such is the relation sustained by the article of Ammonia to Bysen tery; - long used as a powerful stimulant, both externally and inter nally, a corrector of acidity, etc., it was yet considered as possessing but little power in controlling actual diseased states of the system, and least of all, as being applicable to any disease so decidedly in flammatory in its nature as dysentery, or acute mucous enteritis. There are, however, many medicines whose beneficial effects in con trolling inflammatory action in the system we are unable fully to nu derstand; such are the terebinthinate remedies in inflammation of the intestines, cantharides in inflammation of the bladder, and many others whose utility could never have been inferred from an a priori course of reasoning. Experience is always paramount to theory in medical subjects, and facts which we may not be able fully to ex plain, may yet be valuable, and worthy of the greatest attention; indeed, to speak with critical accuracy, we do not fully understand the modus operandi of any medicines on the living system, and every day proves that use and experience alone can give us full confidence in the curative powers of any remedy in any particular form of disease. Had I not seen the most full and conclusive evidence of the utility of Ammonia in Dysentery, both in my own hands and in those of other persons, I should not recommend it to the notice of the profes sion; but after having used it for seven years, in an immense num ber of cases, with the most unequivocal benefit, I cannot hesitate to pronounce it a remedy of most valuable powers. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Lancet and Hospital Reporter, 1852, Vol. 13 Symptoms - The symptoms of chronic bronchitis are ex tremely variable, depending lar ely on the intensity of mor bid action. The lowest grade 0% excitement that receives the name of bronchitis, is an apyrexial disease, characterized by occasional cough and expectoration, manifesting a tendency, under favorable circumstances, to almost entire cessation, but readily reproduced and increased on exposure to a variable or cold atmosphere. In persons thus affected, but little disease ma be manifested during warm weather; but when the cold andy variable season of winter sets in, all of the symptoms are liable to great aggravation, the cough becomin more constant and distressing. These annual remissions an exacerbations may continue for ears in succession, the former becoming less com letc, an the latter more protracted and intense until fina ly the disease becomes fully developed, and the most serious lesions are roduced. In a case of me ium intensity from the beginning, there is some degree of febrile excitement, with evenin exacerbations; together with more or less mucous, muco-puru cut, or albumi nous sputa. The cough is generally paroxysmal, and varies greatly in intensity; tightness and soreness of the chest are often complained of, to ether with wandering pains and em harrassed respiration. He degree to which respiration is im peded, varies greatlyvin different examples, and is produced by different lesions. Here the nervous clement predominates, causing undue contraction of the parts, it becomes simply asthmatic, and occurs in paroxysms; but it may de nd on permanent lesions, such as obstruction or dilatation of t e bron chi, colla se of the air-cells, and emphysema; and it is then more fixe and uniform, though still manifesting appreciable exacerbations and remissions.
