Book excerpt: This study was jointly undertaken by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) and the Western Interstate Energy Board (WIEB) to investigate the need for power system flexibility to ensure reliable and economic operations of the interconnected Western electricity system under higher penetrations of variable energy resources. WECC and WIEB have partnered with E3 and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to investigate these questions using advanced, stochastic reliability modeling and production cost modeling techniques. The study identifies and examines operational challenges and potential enabling strategies for renewable integration under a wide range of operating conditions, scenarios, and sensitivities across the Western Interconnection, with the goal of providing guidance to operators, planners, regulators and policymakers about changing system conditions under higher renewable penetration.

Book Final Scientific Technical Report for Building Transmission Capacity in the Western Interconnection to Support a Low Carbon Future

Download or read book Final Scientific Technical Report for Building Transmission Capacity in the Western Interconnection to Support a Low Carbon Future written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Building Transmission Capacity grant activities focused on educating both policy makers (primarily at Public Utility Commissions) and utilities across the West. Western Grid Group (WGG), the grant recipient, chose three methods to reach these audiences - direct outreach, a website that contains information on policies and strategies to integrate more variable generation resources, and a report - The Best of the West, Policies and Practices to Support Transition to a Lower-Carbon Electric Sector in the Western Interconnection and that highlights what is working in the West. While all avenues for education are effective the Best of the West report is the first west-wide assessment of its kind. The report details incremental changes that are working to integrate variable generation but it also expounds on what fundamental or transformative changes are needed to get to the 20% wind penetration and beyond.

Book Data Analytics Based Demand Profiling and Advanced Demand Side Management for Flexible Operation of Sustainable Power Networks

Download or read book Data Analytics Based Demand Profiling and Advanced Demand Side Management for Flexible Operation of Sustainable Power Networks written by Jelena Ponoćko and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with two important and very timely aspects of the future power system operation - assessment of demand flexibility and advanced demand side management (DSM) facilitating flexible and secure operation of the power network. It provides a clear and comprehensive literature review in these two areas and states precisely the original contributions of the research. The book first demonstrates the benefits of data mining for a reliable assessment of demand flexibility and its composition even with very limited observability of the end-users. It then illustrates the importance of accurate load modelling for efficient application of DSM and considers different criteria in designing DSM programme to achieve several objectives of the network performance simultaneously. Finally, it demonstrates the importance of considering realistic assumptions when planning and estimating the success of DSM programs. The findings presented here have both scientific and practical significance; they gained her BSc and MSc degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Belgrade in 2011 and 2012 respectively. She graduated with her PhD from the University of Manchester. She has presented at several conferences, and has won runner-up prizes in poster presentation at three. She has authored or co-authored more than 40 journal, conference and technical papers.provide a basis for further research, and can be used to guide future applications in industry.

Book Harnessing Variable Renewables

Download or read book Harnessing Variable Renewables written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by Organization for Economic Co-Operation & Developme. This book was released on 2011 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power systems must be actively managed to maintain a steady balance between supply and demand. This is already a complex task as demand varies continually. But what happens when supply becomes more variable and less certain, as with some renewable sources of electricity like wind and solar PV that fluctuate with the weather? to what extent can the resources that help power systems cope with the challenge of variability in demand also be applied to variability of supply? How large are these resources? and what share of electricity supply from variable renewables can they make possible? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. the ways electricity is produced, transported and consumed around the world exhibit great diversity. Grids can cross borders, requiring co-ordinated international policy, or can be distinct within a single country or region. and whether found in dispatchable power plants, storage facilities, interconnections for trade or on the demand side, the flexible resource that ensures the provision of reliable power in the face of uncertainty likewise differs enormously. Written for decision makers, Harnessing Variable Renewables: a Guide to the Balancing Challenge sheds light on managing power systems with large shares of variable renewables. It presents a new, step-by-step approach developed by the IEA to assess the flexibility of power systems, which identifies the already present resources that could help meet the twin challenges of variability and uncertainty.

Book Electricity Markets with Increasing Levels of Renewable Generation Structure Operation Agent based Simulation and Emerging Designs

Download or read book Electricity Markets with Increasing Levels of Renewable Generation Structure Operation Agent based Simulation and Emerging Designs written by Fernando Lopes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the common ground between electricity markets (EMs) and software agents (or artificial intelligence generally). It presents an up-to-date introduction to EMs and intelligent agents, and offers a comprehensive description of the research advances and key achievements related to existing and emerging market designs to reliably and efficiently manage the potential challenges of variable generation (VG). Most EMs are unique in their complex relationships between economics and the physics of energy, but were created without the notion that large penetrations of variable generation (VG) would be part of the supply mix. An advanced multi-agent approach simulates the behavior of power markets over time, particularly markets with large-scale penetrations of renewable resources. It is intended as a reference book for researchers, academics and industry practitioners, but given the scope of the chapters and the highly accessible style, the book also provides a coherent foundation for several different graduate courses.

Book Power Interconnection in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Power Interconnection in Southeast Asia written by Anthony David Owen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an analysis of multilateral power markets, this book examines power interconnection in Southeast Asia, especially among the ASEAN countries. It uses evolutionary experience of electricity interconnection and trade in three international markets that have relevance for ASEAN to draw upon common global themes. Specifically, it compares the Southern African Power Pool, the European grid, and Nord Pool. Discussing the progress made among ASEAN countries in regional energy integration, with a particular focus on the Greater Mekong Sub-region interconnection, it also examines the recently announced interconnection concept between Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Exploring the challenges facing ASEAN interconnection of power grids in the context of previous experience elsewhere in the world, this book presents a template for appropriate best practice in terms of technical, political, and financial requirements. It will therefore be of value to decision makers interested in the political economy of energy in Southeast Asia, as well as academics working on Energy Politics and Southeast Asian Politics.
