Book Which Socialism Whose D tente

Download or read book Which Socialism Whose D tente written by Maud Bracke and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 1968-1969 Czechoslovak crisis was first and foremost a major crisis of European detente. While the Prague Spring was made possible by the immediate and unchecked consequences of early detente in Europe, its crushing sharply brought out the contradictions of detente as understood by the global Cold War protagonists. In a similar way as the Czecho-slovak crisis reflected the ambivalence at the heart of detente, the West European Communist Parties' responses to it revealed the ambivalence of detente as a context for radical social change, either in the East of the West. The scholarly literature on the PCI and PCF has, often in an unproblematic way, understood the shift from Cold War to detente on the European continent in the mid-1960s as a development essentially positive to these parties. The present study argues against this and demonstrates how the shift from the Cold War of the 1950s to detente in Europe reformulated the impasse of revolution or radical change in the West, rather than putting an end to it." Book Stalin s Cold War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Caroline Kennedy-Pipe
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Stalin s Cold War written by Caroline Kennedy-Pipe and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first analysis of the start of the Cold War from a Soviet viewpoint, Caroline Kennedy-Pipe draws on Russian source material to reach some startling conclusions. She challenges the prevailing orthodoxy of Western historians to show how Moscow saw the presence of US troops in Europe in the 1940s and early 1950s as advantageous rather than as a check on Soviet ambitions. The author points to a complex web of concerns than fuelled Moscow's actions, and explores how the Soviet leadership, and Stalin in particular, responded to American policy. She shows how the Soviet experience of the United States and Europe, both before, during and after the Second World War, led Moscow to a policy that was not simply fuelled by anti-Americanism. Six chapters cover events from the wartime conferences of 1943 until the death of Stalin. A final chapter places the book in the context of the current debate over the causes of the Cold War.

Book Russia America the Bomb and the Fall of Western Europe

Download or read book Russia America the Bomb and the Fall of Western Europe written by Brian May and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, Russia, America, the Bomb and the Fall of Western Europe offers a dual approach to unilateral nuclear disarmament. While it systematically analyzes and rejects stock arguments for retaining nuclear weapons, from the supposed threat of Soviet invasion to fears of Finlandization and the loss of mineral resources, it examines the issue within the context of Western Europe’s historic fall. This is described with the help from Arnold Toynbee, Plato and Marx. Brian May argues that, if West European civilization is to survive, it must find the moral strength to stand on its own feet, make its own accommodation with the USSR, and abandon dependence on its offshoot on the other side of the Atlantic, whose policies could lead to its destruction. This book will be of interest to students of geopolitics, international relations, security studies and history.
