Book Early Medieval Jewish Policy in Western Europe

Download or read book Early Medieval Jewish Policy in Western Europe written by Bernard S. Bachrach and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Medieval Jewish Policy in Western Europe was first published in 1977. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This is the first study of early medieval Jewish policy in the West which examines the nature of this policy from the perspective and aims of its formulators. As the author points out, most specialists in Jewish history have been dominated by what the historian Salo Baron has called the "lachrymose conception,' a view which emphasized persecution and suffering as a fundamental theme of Jewish history. Professor Bachrach challenges this view and attacks what he calls the myth of Christian church domination of the early medieval world.

Book Western Europe Eastern Europe and World Development 13th 18th Centuries

Download or read book Western Europe Eastern Europe and World Development 13th 18th Centuries written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of essays is most welcome. The main articles of Marian Małowist are collected together (and in many cases translated into English) for the first time. Małowist, who is one of the major economic historians of the twentieth century, is also a much neglected one. Of the eighteen articles here, only five were published in English-language journals that are widely read by historians and social scientists, and even these journals are primarily read by economic historians. So most scholars have been missing out on one of the most fertile and cultivated minds who have written on the central issue of our times - the wide and widening gulf between the core and the periphery, the North and the South, western and eastern Europe" (Immanuel Wallerstein).

Book The Making of D tente

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wilfried Loth
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2010-04-05
  • ISBN : 1134075081
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book The Making of D tente written by Wilfried Loth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing essays by leading Cold War scholars, such as Wilfried Loth, Geir Lundestad and Seppo Hentilä, this volume offers a broad-ranging examination of the history of détente in the Cold War. The ten years from 1965 to 1975 marked a deep transformation of the bipolar international system of the Cold War. The Vietnam War and the Prague Spring showed the limits of the two superpowers, who were constrained to embark on a wide-ranging détente policy, which culminated with the SALT agreements of 1972. At the same time this very détente opened new venues for the European countries: French policy towards the USSR and the German Ostpolitik being the most evident cases in point. For the first time since the 1950s, Western Europe began to participate in the shaping of the Cold War. The same could not be said of Eastern Europe, but ferments began to establish themselves there which would ultimately lead to the astounding changes of 1989-90: the Prague Spring, the uprisings in Gdansk in 1970 and generally the rise of the dissident movement. That last process being directly linked to the far-reaching event which marked the end of that momentous decade: the Helsinki conference. The Making of Détente will appeal to students of the Cold War, international history and European contemporary history.

Book The United States and Western Europe Since 1945

Download or read book The United States and Western Europe Since 1945 written by Geir Lundestad and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005-08-11 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on new and existing research by a world-class scholar, this is the first book in twenty years to examine the dynamics of the entire American-West European relationship since 1945.The relationship between the United States and Western Europe has always been crucial and recent events dictate that it is becoming ever more so. In this important new work, Geir Lundestad analyses the balance between the cooperation and conflict which has characterized this relationship in the post-war period. He examines talk of transatlantic drift, and the strain now apparent between the USA and the nation states of Western Europe. In the concluding section, Lundestad offers a topical viewof the future of transatlantic interaction.Throughout the work Lundestad's much cited 'empire by invitation' thesis is both put into practice and extended in time and scope. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in one of the most important and enduring international relationships of the last sixty years.
