Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of Western Europe The Readings in European History, a manual now in preparation, and designed to accompany this volume, will contain comprehensive bibliographies for each chapter and a selection of illustrative material, which it is hoped will enable the teacher and pupil to broaden and vivify their knowledge. In the present volume I have given only a few titles at the end of some of the chapters, and in the footnotes I mention, for collateral reading, under the heading Reference, chapters in the best available books, to which the student may be sent for additional detail. Book Western Europe in the Fifth Century

Download or read book Western Europe in the Fifth Century written by Edward Augustus Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Europe in the Fifth Century: An Aftermath When the late Mr. E. A. Freeman set forth on his last visit to Spain his immediate interest was the completion of his History of Sicily. It was known, however, by his friends that he had left behind in an unfinished state the materials for a volume on Western Europe in the Fifth Century. Like many other historical students he was much interested in the few historical notices that have survived concerning the events in Britain during the fifth century. He desired to understand them, and as far as possible to fit them in with what we know of the general political development of Western Europe, and he felt that the only way of approaching this subject with any chance of permanent success was to make sure of the events that had happened in Gaul. If we understood clearly what had occurred there we were at least in possession of information which would keep us from wrong ideas as to what might have happened in insular Britain. The incidents that are recorded are so brief and isolated that, taken by themselves, they fail to give us any idea of what was going on, but when we look at them in the light created by events in Gaul we perceive faint traces of a connexion between them; it is the fading influence of the magic name, respublica Romana, and the efforts that were being made, secular and religious, to revive it for the salvation of the island. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nations of Western Europe It is a rare pleasure to see the world stories which every child should know put in this delightful form, where they may be equally accessible to schools and libraries and homes. It has been my good fortune to sit and listen to many of these stirring tales, as this remarkable story teller carried her eager audience of boys and girls in rapt attention from episode to episode; and also to stay to the symposium afterward and hear the chil dren's exclamations of approbation or disapproval of the different characters, and their animated discussion of the various ethical questions that were raised. I have never seen anything like it anywhere else. It seemed to me I could see standards of conduct emerg ing out of the nebulous haze of childish ideals. And character taking form under her magic spell. The author also has a literary touch that is rare even in the best teachers. Her pen talks with colloquial flavor and there is a personal and intimate quality in her style that holds us throughout the story, though we may have heard it often before. She throws in enough background to her stories in the way of fact and environment to give her characters atmosphere which is usually lacking in story books. Book Readings in European History

Download or read book Readings in European History written by James Harvey Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in European History: A Collection of Extracts From the Sources Chosen With the Purpose of Illustrating the Progress of Culture in Western Europe Since the German Invasions It is now generally conceded by teachers that the study of history should consist of something more than plying the text-book, - a method simple, no doubt, and enjoying the sanction of immemorial usage, but painful and on the whole rather fruitless. The text-book is doubtless as essential as ever as a means of supplying the learner with a coherent outline of the subject, but this outline must be given reality and life by recourse to fuller and more vivid accounts of events and persons than can be looked for in even the most carefully constructed manual. In order to meet this need, so called source books have been appearing of late, not only in the United States but in England, France, and Germany. These furnish in a more or less convenient form the very best of all existing material for collateral reading and for discussion, namely, examples of the sources themselves. This is not the place to defend the judicious use of extracts from the sources; indeed, such defense would be superfluous, since few teachers now question the expediency of the newer method, if only the illustrative extracts can be brought into organic relation with the general historical narrative, so that there may be no danger of confusing the student. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hoosier's Experience Western Europe, Notes on the Way Being aware of the fact that many Americans of eminent literary and scientific attainments visit Europe for the purpose of adding to literature and science, whose productions teem with observations and critical details on the places of antiquity, works of art, manners and customs of the people of England, Ireland, and France, the writer had not intended that any of his jottings or rambling notes should ever appear in book form. On returning from the Old World, as most Americans desire to do after an absence of a few months, a letter appeared in the Marshall County Republican giving a description of a mid-winter voyage from Liverpool to New York. The ocean leaf of the book of most travelers being blank, the letter referred to called forth some encomiums from our home county press, with a suggestion that the same be published in book form. Book The Making of Western Europe Vol 1

Download or read book The Making of Western Europe Vol 1 written by C. R. L. Fletcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of Western Europe, Vol. 1: Being an Attempt to Trace the Fortunes of the Children of the Roman Empire The genesis of the present attempt must be sought in Professor W. P. Ker's fascinating book entitled T be Dark Ages, the first volume in Professor Saintsbury's series of Periods of European Literature. I am not so vain as to imagine that I can illustrate the political side of the period as he has illustrated the literary side; but it was his book that first stimulated in me a sort of thirst to know more about the Dark Ages, and, when once that thirst was created, mere idleness prompted me to try and put on paper, in simple form, such ideas as I had been able to collect. These ideas are very few. I am continually reminded how little we know, how meagre and untrustworthy are our authorities, how much, to use Mommsen's words, we fall back upon 'the conventionally-received tradition which assumes the name of history a mass of mostly worthless legends, which have usually been put together without discrimination of the true character, either of legend or history.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Womankind in Western Europe: From the Earliest Times to the Seventeenth Century I consider that the line of division in Western Europe between the old society and the new, as far as we can make anything like a line, lies through the earlier years of the seventeenth century, the com mencement of the reign of Louis XIII. In France and that of Charles I. In England. When I entered upon this subject, my idea was to write a complete history of Womankind in the West, and to continue it down to our own time but I found, as 1 advanced with it, that I was undertaking a task which, to be carried out properly and completely.
