Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endymion Wilkinson's bestselling manual of Chinese history has long been an indispensable guide to all those interested in the civilization and history of China. In this latest edition, now in a bigger format, its scope has been dramatically enlarged by the addition of one million words of new text. Twelve years in the making, the new manual introduces students to different types of transmitted, excavated, and artifactual sources from prehistory to the twentieth century. It also examines the context in which the sources were produced, preserved, and received, the problems of research and interpretation associated with them, and the best, most up-to-date secondary works. Because the writing of history has always played a central role in Chinese politics and culture, special attention is devoted to the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese historiography.

Book The Book Worlds of East Asia and Europe 1450 1850

Download or read book The Book Worlds of East Asia and Europe 1450 1850 written by Joseph P. McDermott and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the first comparative survey of the relations between the two most active book worlds in Eurasia between 1450 and 1850. Prominent scholars in book history explore different approaches to publishing, printing, and book culture. They discuss the extent of technology transfer and book distribution between the two regions and show how much book historians of East Asia and Europe can learn from one another by raising new questions, exploring remarkable similarities and differences in these regions’ production, distribution, and consumption of books. The chapters in turn show different ways of writing transnational comparative history. Whereas recent problems confronting research on European books can instruct researchers on East Asian book production, so can the privileged role of noncommercial publications in the East Asian textual record highlight for historians of the European book the singular contribution of commercial printing and market demands to the making of the European printed record. Likewise, although production growth was accompanied in both regions by a wider distribution of books, woodblock technology’s simplicity and mobility allowed for a shift in China of its production and distribution sites farther down the hierarchy of urban sites than was common in Europe. And, the different demands and consumption practices within these two regions’ expanding markets led to different genre preferences and uses as well as to the growth of distinctive female readerships. A substantial introduction pulls the work together and the volume ends with an essay that considers how these historical developments shape the present book worlds of Eurasia. “This splendid volume offers expert new insight into the ways of producing, financing, distributing, and reading printed books in early modern Europe and East Asia. This is comparative history at its best, which leaves us with a better understanding of each context and of the challenges common to book cultures across space and time.” —Ann Blair, author of Too Much to Know: Managing Scholarly Information before the Modern Age and professor of history, Harvard University “This engrossing account of the history of the book by leading specialists on the European and East Asian publishing worlds takes stock of what we know—and how much we still need to know—about the places that books had in the lives of our early modern forebears. Each chapter is masterful state-of-the-field coverage of its subject, and together they set a new standard for future studies of the book, East and West.” —Timothy Brook, author of The Troubled Empire: China in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties

Book The Role of Henri Borel in Chinese Translation History

Download or read book The Role of Henri Borel in Chinese Translation History written by Audrey Heijns and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the historical background of Chinese translation in the West and the emergence of several prominent European translators of China, this book examines the role of a translator in terms of cross-cultural communication, the image of the foreign culture in the minds of the target audience, and the influence of their translations on the target culture. With the focus on the career and output of the Dutch translator Henri Borel (1869–1933), this study investigates different aspects of the role of translator. The investigation is carried out by analysing texts and probing the achievements and contributions of the translator, underpinned by documents from the National Archives and the Literature Museum in the Hague, the Netherlands. Based on the findings derived from this study, advice is offered to those now involved in the promotion and translation of Chinese culture and literature. It will make an important contribution to the burgeoning history of Chinese translation. This book will be of interest to anyone with an interest or background in the translation history of China, the history of sinology in the West, and the role of translators.

Book China Mission Studies 1550 1800 Bulletin as of vol 11 Sino Western Cultural Relations Journal

Download or read book China Mission Studies 1550 1800 Bulletin as of vol 11 Sino Western Cultural Relations Journal written by Hartmut Walravens and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sino-Western Cultural Relations Journal of which 38 fascicles were published between 1979 and 2016 is a mine of information on issues, events, articles and reviews on the subject. It attracted at first a very small constituency of experts in this relatively new field of research, at first focusing on the early China Mission, but then widening its scope and addressing the whole area of cultural relations between China and the West. This journal was edited and financed single-handedly by David E. Mungello who is known as a historian and an outstanding Leibniz expert. SWCRJ published contributions in English, German, French and Chinese, thus also supporting the growing interest in the subject in China. The present bibliography provides a complete listing of the contents of the journal and facilitates access by a name and a subject index. It is common knowledge that everything of value may be found on the internet but whoever puts this statement to the test will soon find out that "everything" actually means "something". Therefore the few serious students of the field will welcome the present modest bibliography.

Book Protestant Missionaries in China

Download or read book Protestant Missionaries in China written by Jonathan A. Seitz and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a focus on Robert Morrison, Protestant Missionaries in China evaluates the role of nineteenth-century British missionaries in the early development of the cross-cultural relationship between China and the English-speaking world. As one of the first generation of British Protestant missionaries, Robert Morrison went to China in 1807 with the goal of evangelizing the country. His mission pushed him into deeper engagement with Chinese language and culture, and the exchange flowed both ways as Morrison—a working-class man whose firsthand experiences made him an “accidental expert”—brought depictions of China back to eager British audiences. Author Jonathan A. Seitz proposes that, despite the limitations imposed by the orientalism impulse of the era, Morrison and his fellow missionaries were instrumental in creating a new map of cross-cultural engagement that would evolve, ultimately, into modern sinology. Engaging and well researched, Protestant Missionaries in China explores the impact of Morrison and his contemporaries on early sinology, mission work, and Chinese Christianity during the three decades before the start of the Opium Wars.

Book Christianity and Confucianism

Download or read book Christianity and Confucianism written by Christopher Hancock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity and Confucianism: Culture, Faith and Politics, sets comparative textual analysis against the backcloth of 2000 years of cultural, political, and religious interaction between China and the West. As the world responds to China's rise and China positions herself for global engagement, this major new study reawakens and revises an ancient conversation. As a generous introduction to biblical Christianity and the Confucian Classics, Christianity and Confucianism tells a remarkable story of mutual formation and cultural indebtedness. East and West are shown to have shaped the mind, heart, culture, philosophy and politics of the other - and far more, perhaps, than either knows or would want to admit. Christopher Hancock has provided a rich and stimulating resource for scholars and students, diplomats and social scientists, devotees of culture and those who pursue wisdom and peace today.
