The castle in the 7th century) became the theatre of dispute and war between the Normans, Flemings, English, and the native Welsh, and after experiencing many changes of fortune ine war was finally restored to a state of tranquillity in the reign of Edward I.' The extant sources for this turbulent period give the noteworthy incidents in the story of the castle the record of its Sieges and pillages, and the names of its custodians from time to time. Those oi the 13th century are both more numerous and more elaborate than those of the 12th century, and that owing to the permanent establishment Of English influences in West Wales. Documents dating from the reign of John, and particularly those of the closing years of the 13th century give manorial details of considerable value, and afford occasional glimpses of the architectural features of the castle. The latter are the more readily welcomed, as up to the present no light has been thrown upon the structure, beyond a bald description of the scant remains that are almost secluded by buildings of a modern date. NO one has yet essayed a ground plan of the medieval castle of Carmarthen. The state of tranquillity bequeathed by Edward I. To Wales was not one that made it practical to dispense with Old Welsh castles. On the contrary the castle held a prominent place in Edward's Welsh policy. According to the plan of Welsh government outlined in his ordin ance at Rhuddlan, Carmarthen was to do for West Wales, that part Of the ancient Principality south Of the Dovey, what Carnarvon was to do for North Wales.
