Certain of the native Species are of great value as a source Of food for graz ing animals, particularly those species with growth habits permit ting continuous cropping without destroying the plants. The sod forming grasses and those that spread by runners or rootstocks are especially valuable. This bulletin is concerned only with those species which occur wild in West Virginia. Some of these are also cultivated at times, but the grasses normally found only in cultivation are not included, since these are generally well known and need not form a part of this treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from West Virginia Pastures: A Typical Bluegrass Pasture in a Limestone Section of the State The value Of pasture land varies considerably in the different counties but in most counties. The interest on the investment in land plus the taxes amounts to about 70 per cent Of the value of the gain produced, thus leaving only a small margin which might be expended toward improving the grass. The cost Of fencing was not considered in the foregoing figures. If some treatment Of the grass land can be found that will bring about improvement and the cost not exceed the value Of the improvement, then pastures should be made to carry more animals on a given area than are now being grazed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatological Data, West Virginia, Vol. 61: January 1953 The mild weather was of help to the farmer in holding down his feed bills; at the same time, the urban dweller was favored by reduction in his fuel requirements. Egg and milk produc tion increased especially towards the end of the month but some bushes showed considerable bud growth by the last week of the month. Winter grains seemed to be in good condition with a little growth showing. The pasture and meadow grasses made a very little new growth near the close of the month. Frequent light rains and snows with little runoff were helpful in build ing up subsoil moisture for the next growing season. Frequent rains hindered construction work and most other out-of-doors projects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The True Grasses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The True Grasses Classic Reprint written by Eduard Hackel and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Grasses It is hoped also that the translation will thus be made more suitable for use as a text-book in our Agricultural Colleges, for which purpose the treatment of the structure, morphology, and physiology of grasses, given in detail and fully illustrated in Part I, renders the work especially well adapted. Those familiar with the German will notice that in translation occasional liberties have been taken with the original by the omission of unimportant matter, insertion of head-lines, etc. Except in the account of the Bambusese, all matter enclosed in brackets has been added by myself. A number of notes and observations have been added by Prof. Hackel, to whom the manuscript was submitted for revision and approval before being sent to the printers. Following the number of each genus there has been inserted, in parenthesis, its number in Bentham and Hooker's Genera Plantarum, facilitating reference to that work and at the same time showing the diversity between the systems of classification adopted. With few exceptions the illustrations are from electrotypes of the original woodcuts obtained from the German publisher, Wilhelm Engelmann, of Leipzig. The figures illustrating the spikes of the cereals were redrawn from the imprints in the original and reduced nearly one half by photo-engraving. Figures 3a and 91a are additions, while figures 45a, 75a, and 78 were drawn especially for the translation and appear here for the first time. Thanks are due Mr. Charles E.Smith, of Philadelphia, for his kind assistance with the proofs, and Dr. W. J. Beal, of Lansing, Michigan, and Mr. C. M. McClung, of Knoxville, Tennessee, for their interest in the progress of the work and material aid in its publication. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Grasses and Forage Plants of the Southeastern States Rice - Rice is grown by Mr. Lewis at Apalachicola for horse feed, for which he thinks it about as valuable as corn. Richardsonia scabra (mexican clover). - This plant often appears in cultivated land after the crop has been taken Off, and is usually associated with crab grass. I saw it nowhere large enough to make good hay. Opinions differ as to its worth. Dr. C. Mohr thinks it of some value. Judge R. C. Long, of Tallahassee, does not esteem it and keeps it out of his land. A gentleman who resides near Thomasville, Ala., described a succulent plant of sandy bottoms under the name of water pusley, which I think must be the Richardsonia. He says it is very palatable to cattle and is excellent for green manuring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Meadows and Pastures

Download or read book Meadows and Pastures written by J. B. Killebrew and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meadows and Pastures: A Compendium of the Grasses of Tennessee No surer test of the degree of agricultural advancement of a country can be found than the relative acreage of land laid down to grass and devoted to tillage. Wherever the grass is most abnud ant there is the highest farming. This statement is most strikingly established by comparing the agricultural systems of France and England. In France 53 per cent of the tillable land is annually sown in some kind of grain, while in England the grain-bearing per cent of land is only 25. On the other hand, while France has but 22 per cent in grass, England has 50. Notwithstanding this difference in the amount of land devoted to grain, the yield of wheat to each inhabitant is almost identical in the two countries Every acre of grain land in England receives, on an average, the manure from the animals fed off three acres of grass. In France, on the contrary, the manure made from each acre of grass has to be spread over two and a half acres of grain. In other words, each acre of grain in England gets nine loads of manure to one load given to the acre in France.
