In 1994, Tony Hogg and Tony MacDonald compiled the definitive account of West Ham's playing staff, and Hogg has now fully updated the book to include detailed biographies of the 130-plus new heroes - including Paulo Di Canio, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Teddy Sheringham and the 2005 Play-Off Final team - as well as refreshing all existing entries with his latest research. • Author : Pete May
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2012-03-23
  • ISBN : 1780574517
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book West Ham written by Pete May and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many feared that West Ham would fade and die during the 2001-2002 season. Former gaffer Harry Redknapp had been sacked in mysterious circumstances and would never again exclaim that a Hammers side is 'down to the bare bones'. Meanwhile, Glenn Roeder - the man who was initially told not even to apply for the job - admitted to feeling like a 100-1 outsider who had won the Grand National upon being handed the job no one else would take. Young England stars Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard had been sold for 30 million and Leeds fans greeted the appearance of the massive new Dr. Martens stand with a refrain of 'Is that the Rio stand?' Furthermore, the bookies had West Ham down as certainties for relegation and there was universal bemusement at West Ham's appointment of a rookie Premiership manager. Pete May has supported the Hammers ever since he heard cries from the Chicken Run of 'Come on Hammers really pep it up and make it mediocre!' and 'Remember goals, West Ham? They were big in the Seventies!' He offers a supporters' view of Glenn Roeder's crucial first season, while also reminiscing about some of the funniest moments in Hammers' history.

Book West Ham and the River Lea

Download or read book West Ham and the River Lea written by Jim Clifford and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, London’s population grew by more than five million as people flocked from the countryside to the city to take up jobs in shops and factories. In West Ham and the River Lea, Jim Clifford explores the growth of London’s most populous independent suburb and the degradation of its second largest river, bringing to light the consequences of these developments on social democracy and urban politics in Greater London. Drawing on Ordnance Surveys and archival materials, Jim Clifford uses historical geographic information systems to map the migration of Greater London’s industry into West Ham’s marshlands and reveals the consequences for the working-class people who lived among the factories. He argues that an unstable and unhealthy environment fuelled protest and political transformation. Poverty, pollution, water shortages, infectious disease, floods, and an unemployment crisis provided an opening for a new urban politics to emerge. By exploring the intersection of pollution, poverty, and instability, Clifford establishes the importance of the urban environment in the development of social democracy in Greater London at the turn of the twentieth century.

Book War Hammers I

Download or read book War Hammers I written by Brian Belton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the fascinating story of West Ham United Football Club during the First World War, charting the relationship between war and football by following the pursuits of West Ham from 1913/14 to 1918/19. In many ways, it was their success in wartime competitions that led to them being accepted into the Football League in 1919, paving the way for subsequent FA Cup and League success. As well as a football story, this book is about the impact of the war on Britain. It documents the social implications of war on Londoners and the social and political influence of football, the armed forces and civilians alike. Looking closely at the 13th Service Battalion, also known as the 'West Ham Pals', the book includes such players as George Kay, Ted Hufton, and their manager and coach, Syd King and Charlie Paynter respectively.
