He married Margreth Pitschi (1820-1883) April 21, 1838 in Schiers, Switzerland. They had nine children. They immigrated to the United States in 1847 and settled in Polk, Washington County, Wisconsin. Hans died July 27, 1862. Descendants and relatives lived in Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, Colorado and elsewhere.

In 1914, he rode with soldiers into Mexico and disappeared. The baby he and his wife expected would one day be called The Cinderella of Big Bend.
