Excerpt: ... outrage, which convulsed the whole civilised world in one vast comprehensive throb of horror, was perpetrated upon the Government of the Gold Coast Colony. Need it be said that I refer to the Gun Outrage? I do not know if it is necessary to say anything further, all the particulars being of course known to the intelligent reader; but in case there should be anyone, who, from having been in China, Siberia, Dublin, or some other out-of-the-way locality at the time, failed to hear them, I will, at the risk of being wearisome, repeat them. Know then, 0 traveller, who hast been wandering in the uttermost parts of the earth, that the Government of the Gold Coast Colony were the happy possessors of some unique specimens of ancient ordnance. These guns were indeed of such venerable antiquity that they were popularly believed to have formed part of the armament of that primitive vessel the Ark, and to have been used by that stout old sea-dog, Captain Noah, for the shooting of whales and other game. Will it be believed that that Government was so utterly unworthy of the possession of these inestimable treasures, and so indifferent to their preservation, as to leave them out in the open air, where anyone might easily have stolen them, and where, besides, they were exposed to all the inclemencies of the seasons? Yes, these priceless relics of the antediluvian period, which should have graced our national museum, there to be a source of envy to all foreign states, were actually by a callous Government left to be destroyed by the corroding hand of time, out on a roadside in the town of Accra, under the ludicrous idea that they there formed an imposing military display. My heart used to bleed whenever I passed these poor neglected veterans, to see them...

Artist, musician, and author Dave Kobrenski takes the reader on a musical and visual journey up the Djoliba river in Guinea to explore ancient music traditions, as well as to understand the challenges that face a country "balancing between the world of its ancient traditions and the frontier of modern ideals and influences." Dozens of original paintings and drawings accompany vivid first-hand accounts of the music, culture, and people of Guinea, while scores of rhythm notations make this a unique and valuable resource for musicians, educators, and travel enthusiasts alike. From the author's preface: "Part travelogue, part sketchbook, this is a book about glimpsing in the everyday dust of existence the potential for rich and meaningful expressions of being in the world; of seeing that beyond the tattered common cloth of life hangs a veil of mystery infused with magic and wonder."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to a West African Tradition The Art of Fufu is a fascinating and informative guide to fufu, one of the most delicious and beloved staple foods of West Africans. All fufu dishes consist of two parts--the prepared, cooked fufu (which has a dough-like consistency and is made by mixing a plant base with water) and a unique soup that accompanies it. The cooked fufu can be made from a variety of bases, such as yams, shredded cassava tubers, and cassava flour. After the fufu is cooked, it is rolled into small balls, which are then formed into a spoon shape with the hand. The soup is then scooped with the fufu, and the bite is swallowed whole. Just as there are many different types of fufu, there are many different types of soups. Part of the joy of fufu is discovering which flavors pair best together. This colorful book discusses popular ingredients used to make fufu and the soups that go along with it as well as methods of preparation for fufu. The Art of Fufu is sure to appeal to those interested in learning more about West Africa's food culture and one of its most cherished foods.

Book Travel Sketches from Liberia

Download or read book Travel Sketches from Liberia written by Henk Dop and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1880s a Swiss-born biologist, Johann Büttikofer, while working for the Royal Museum of Natural History in Leiden, The Netherlands, carried out two extended expeditions to Liberia, West Africa. In 1890 he published the results of his work in German in two-volumes, entitled Reisebilder aus Liberia (Travel Sketches from Liberia). Büttikofer worked extensively in the forested regions of coastal Liberia and made the acquaintance of many prominent Liberians and other personalities of that era. His zoological work there is actually exceeded by his detailed descriptions of the state of Liberia some 50 years following its colonization by freed American slaves and their descendents. It constitutes the first comprehensive monograph on the Republic of Liberia.

Book Imaging Culture

Download or read book Imaging Culture written by Candace M. Keller and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging Culture is a sociohistorical study of the meaning, function, and aesthetic significance of photography in Mali, West Africa, from the 1930s to the present. Spanning the dynamic periods of colonialism, national independence, socialism, and democracy, its analysis focuses on the studio and documentary work of professional urban photographers, particularly in the capital city of Bamako and in smaller cities such as Mopti and Ségu. Featuring the work of more than twenty-five photographers, it concentrates on those who have been particularly influential for the local development and practice of the medium as well as its international popularization and active participation in the contemporary art market. Imaging Culture looks at how local aesthetic ideas are visually communicated in the photographers' art and argues that though these aesthetic arrangements have specific relevance for local consumers, they transcend geographical and cultural boundaries to have value for contemporary global audiences as well. Imaging Culture is an important and visually interesting book which will become a standard source for those who study African photography and its global impact.
