This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wessex Poems and Other Verses, And, Poems of the Past and the Present OF the miscellaneous collection of verse that follows, only four pieces have been published, though many were written long ago, and others partly written. In some few cases the verses were turned into prose and printed as such in a novel, it not having been anticipated at that time that they might see the light in their original shape. Here and there, when an ancient and legitimate word still current in the district, for which there was no close equivalent in received English, suggested itself, it has been made use of, on what seemed good grounds. The pieces are in a large degree dramatic or personative in conception; and the dates attached to some of the poems do not apply to the rough sketches given in illustration, ' which have been recently made, and, as may be surmised, are inserted for personal and local reasons rather than for their intrinsic qualities. Book excerpt: Wessex Poems was Hardy's first collection of poetry, published after he had turned away from novel-writing, disillusioned by the savage reception Jude the Obscure had received. The publication of Wessex Poems marked the start of an extraordinary new phase in Hardy's writing career, as he was to spent the rest of his life, some thirty years, writing and publishing poetry exclusively. Here are entertaining Dorset ballads, verses set during the Napoleonic Wars, and personal poems reflecting on Hardy's life and loves. Composed throughout Hardy's life and informed by his affection for his beloved Wessex, their publication heralded the arrival of a major new poetic voice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most college and university libraries, materials published before 1800 have been moved into special collections, while the post-1923 books remain in general circulation. But books published between these dates are vulnerable to deaccessioning, as libraries increasingly reconfigure access to public-domain texts via digital repositories such as Google Books. Even libraries with strong commitments to their print collections are clearing out the duplicates, assuming that circulating copies of any given nineteenth-century edition are essentially identical to one another. When you look closely, however, you see that they are not. Many nineteenth-century books were donated by alumni or their families decades ago, and many of them bear traces left behind by the people who first owned and used them. In Book Traces, Andrew M. Stauffer adopts what he calls "guided serendipity" as a tactic in pursuit of two goals: first, to read nineteenth-century poetry through the clues and objects earlier readers left in their books and, second, to defend the value of keeping the physical volumes on the shelves. Finding in such books of poetry the inscriptions, annotations, and insertions made by their original owners, and using them as exemplary case studies, Stauffer shows how the physical, historical book enables a modern reader to encounter poetry through the eyes of someone for whom it was personal.

Book Reading Victorian Poetry

Download or read book Reading Victorian Poetry written by Richard Cronin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Victorian Poetry “Richard Cronin’s exceptionally fine book carries out just what its title promises – reading. The pleasure of his adroit, meticulously imaginative insights into verbal and metrical effects is constant ... One of the best general readings of Victorian poetry in the last ten years.” Victorian Studies “Reading Victorian Poetry will make an excellent introduction to Victorian poetry and gives a good account of a number of key issues.” English Studies Reading Victorian Poetry offers close readings of poems from the Victorian era, carefully selected by the author to reflect the breadth and diversity of nineteenth-century poetry. Richard Cronin’s outstanding consideration of a wide range of poets reflects the unusual diversity of Victorian poetry, which includes, amongst others, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, D.G. Rossetti, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. The book investigates key concerns of the era in which poetry was ousted by the novel from the culturally central position that it had enjoyed for centuries. The result is an important and exciting contribution to the understanding of nineteenth-century poetry, and a crucial resource for anyone interested in Victorian literature.
