Book Advances in Geroscience

Download or read book Advances in Geroscience written by Felipe Sierra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive overview of a new scientific discipline termed Geroscience. Geroscience examines the molecular and cellular mechanisms that might explain why aging is the main risk factor for most chronic diseases affecting the elderly population. Over the past few decades, researchers have made impressive progress in understanding the genetics, biology and physiology of aging. This book presents vital research that can help readers to better understand how aging is a critical malleable risk factor in most chronic diseases, which, in turn, could lead to interventions that can help increase a healthy lifespan, or ‘healthspan.’ The book begins with an analysis of the Geroscience hypothesis, as well as the epidemiological underpinnings that define aging as a candidate main risk factor for most chronic diseases. Next, each chapter focuses on one particular disease, or group of diseases, with an emphasis on how basic molecular and cellular biology might explain why aging is a major risk factor for it. Coverage in the book includes: cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementias, stroke, Parkinson's and Alzheimer’s diseases, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes asthma, emphysema, kidney disease, vision impairment, and AIDS/HIV. It finishes with a chapter on pain in the elderly and an overview of future steps needed to bring the newly acquired knowledge into the clinic and the public at large.

Download or read book Polyextremophiles written by Joseph Seckbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Microorganisms and some macro-organisms can live under extreme conditions. For example, high and low temperature, acidic and alkaline conditions, high salt areas, high pressure, toxic compounds, high level of ionizing radiation, anoxia and absence of light, etc. Many organisms inhabit environments characterized by more than one form of stress (Polyextremophiles). Among them are those who live in hypersaline and alkaline, hot and acidic, cold/hot and high hydrostatic pressure, etc. Polyextremophiles found in desert regions have to copy with intense UV irradiation and desiccation, high as well as low temperatures, and low availability of water and nutrients. This book provides novel results of application to polyextremophiles research ranging from nanotechnology to synthetic biology to the origin of life and beyond.

Book Permafrost Ecosystems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Akira Osawa
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2010-01-04
  • ISBN : 1402096933
  • Pages : 507 pages

Download or read book Permafrost Ecosystems written by Akira Osawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-04 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a decade-long collaboration between Japan and Russia, this important volume presents the first major synthesis of current knowledge on the ecophysiology of the coniferous forests growing on permafrost at high latitudes. It presents ecological data for a region long inaccessible to most scientists, and raises important questions about the global carbon balance as these systems are affected by the changing climate. Making up around 20% of the entire boreal forests of the northern hemisphere, these ‘permafrost forest ecosystems’ are subject to particular constraints in terms of temperature, nutrient availability, and root space, creating exceptional ecosystem characteristics not known elsewhere. This authoritative text explores their diversity, structure, dynamics and physiology. It provides a comparison of these forests in relation to boreal forests elsewhere, and concludes with an assessment of the potential responses of this unique biome to climate change. The book will be invaluable to advanced students and researchers interested in boreal vegetation, forest ecology, silviculture and forest soils, as well as to researchers into climate change and the global carbon balance.

Download or read book Numerical Algorithms with C written by Giesela Engeln-Müllges and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More scientists now use C than any other programming language. This book contains practical, computer-ready algorithms for many standard methods of numerical mathematics. It describes the principles of the various methods and provides support in choosing the appropriate method for a given task. Topics given special emphasis include converging methods for solving nonlinear equations, methods for solving systems of linear equations for many special matrix structures, and the Shepard method for multidimensional interpolation. The CD contains C-programs for almost all the algorithms given in the book and a compiler, together with software for graphical printing.

Book Numerical Algorithms with Fortran

Download or read book Numerical Algorithms with Fortran written by Gisela Engeln-Müllges and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-04-13 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a completely up-to-date compendium of Fortran algorithms for numerical mathematics, including many sophisticated algorithms which are not available elsewhere. All have been extensively field-tested and cover methods for solving nonlinear equations, the method of Laguerre for solving algebraic equations, conjugating gradients for solving linear systems of equations, and the McKee algorithm for solving special systems of symmetric equations. The real, practical algorithms provided make the book indispensable for applied scientists working in all areas of research. The CD contains Fortran programs for the algorithms given in the text.
