Book Order and Rivalry

Download or read book Order and Rivalry written by Madeleine Lynch Dungy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War transformed the legal and geopolitical framework for international trade by decentring Europe in global markets. Order and Rivalry traces the formation and development of multilateral trade structures in the aftermath of the First World War in response to the marginalization of Europe in the world economy, the use of private commerce as a tool of military power and the collapse of empires across Central and Eastern Europe. In this accessible study, Madeleine Lynch Dungy highlights the 1920s as a pivotal transition phase between the network of bilateral trade treaties that underpinned the first globalization of the late nineteenth century and the institutionalised regime of international governance after 1945. Focusing on the League of Nations, she shows that this institution's legacy was not to initiate a linear forward march towards today's World Trade Organization, but rather to frame an open-ended and conflictual process of experimentation that is still ongoing.

Book Essays on Microeconomics and Industrial Organisation

Download or read book Essays on Microeconomics and Industrial Organisation written by Pablo Coto-Millán and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on Microeconomics and Industrial Organisation aim to serve as a source and work of reference and consultation for the field of Microeconomics in general and of Industrial Organisation in particular. Traditionally, Microeconomics is essentially taught as theory and hardly ever an estimation of a demand, production and cost function is offered . Over the last two decades, however, Microeconomics has greatly broadened its field of empirical application. Therefore, this text combines microeconomic theories with a variety of empirical cases. The standardised microeconomic analysis of demand, production and costs is set forth along with appropriate econometric techniques. The text consists of four parts: Demand, Production and Costs (Supply), Market and Industrial Structure and Failure of Market and Industrial Regulation. It includes eleven new chapters with respect to the first edition.

Book Struggle Against Dependence

Download or read book Struggle Against Dependence written by Eva Paus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, most of the countries in Central America and the Caribbean share a common set of problems and structural characteristics that are the result of a similar history of economic development. The specific articulation of these characteristics and the severity of the economic problems in any particular country, of course, vary. In general, the economies of the region are small, agricultural export economies. Sugar, bananas, coffee, and meat have been the main export items for most countries, but natural resource exports-bauxite and oil-have played a key role for a few Caribbean countries.

Book Infrastructure and the Space Economy

Download or read book Infrastructure and the Space Economy written by Karin Peschel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift is dedicated to ROLF FUNCK on occasion of his 60th birthday on February 7, 1990. It was a wholehearted desire of the authors who all are obliged to ROLF FUNCK in their research work to please and to honour him and to express their deep gratitude. I gladly took the initiative of preparing this Festschrift since I have been closely associated with ROLF FUNCK for many years of his academic life. We first met in 1958 when he was Assistant Professor (Wissenschaftlicher Assistent) and I was student at the University of Munster. A few years later, when ROLF FUNCK, still very young, moved to the University of Karlsruhe as Professor of Economics and Director of the Institute of Economic Policy and Research, he offered me the opportunity of working with him and this started a long period of successful scientific collaboration. Nowadays we meet only occasionally at conferences, in committees etc. , but I always recall with pleasure the warm-hearted and stimulating atmosphere he created at his In stitute in Karlsruhe. I express my thanks to the authors and to the publisher, the Springer Verlag, for their cooperation as well as to the sponsors who provided the necessary funds for the publication of this Festschrift. For her enthusiasm in compiling and processing the articles on the PC and producing the final draft I am indebted to Mrs. Ilona Lohr.

Book Competing in a Global Economy

Download or read book Competing in a Global Economy written by Robert Ballance and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global patterns of production and trade in manufactures have changed tremendously over the past two decades. The growth of world trade has been accompanied by a rapid increase in the number of products, suppliers and buyers involved in international markets. At the same time, the means by which manufacturers compete and collaborate have been changing. The great challenges that these developments pose for policy makers and practitioners provide the basic motive for this comprehensive assessment of the underlying forces and determinants that are reshaping the world's industrial map. Based upon an empirical approach, the analysis is closely interwoven with key elements of economic theory. the Heckscher-Ohlin model provides the framework for most of the book's interpretation, but less formal models focusing on economies of scale, product differentiation and other aspects of imperfect competition also figure prominently. The extensive research with access to UNIDO's vast body of unpublished information and contributions from specialists, has resulted in a blend of theoretical and empirical material which yields new insights into the way firms and industries compete in international markets.

Book Money in Motion

Download or read book Money in Motion written by Ghislain Deleplace and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In analyzing money, contemporary economics has focused its attention on money's function as a store of value, neglecting its role as medium of circulation. When circulation is put center stage, it becomes apparent that the supply of money does indeed adapt to the needs of trade - and does so in many different ways, often ways that are difficult for a central bank to control, because they reflect the responses of banks and other financial institutions to market incentives. But money's role in circulation must be coordinated with its store of value function, and both with finance. Failure here can lead to instability. The essays in this volume by internationally renowned economists cover these issues in original and contrasting analyses, presenting the American post-Keynesian perspective, on the one hand, and the point of view of the French Circulation School, on the other.
