Download or read book Between Kant and Hegel written by Dieter Henrich and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrifying when first delivered in 1973, legendary in the years since, Dieter Henrich's lectures on German Idealism were the first contact a major German philosopher had made with an American audience since the onset of World War II. They remain one of the most eloquent explanations and interpretations of classical German philosophy and of the way it relates to the concerns of contemporary philosophy. Thanks to the editorial work of David Pacini, the lectures appear here with annotations linking them to editions of the masterworks of German philosophy as they are now available. Henrich describes the movement that led from Kant to Hegel, beginning with an interpretation of the structure and tensions of Kant's system. He locates the Kantian movement and revival of Spinoza, as sketched by F. H. Jacobi, in the intellectual conditions of the time and in the philosophical motivations of modern thought. Providing extensive analysis of the various versions of Fichte's Science of Knowledge, Henrich brings into view a constellation of problems that illuminate the accomplishments of the founders of Romanticism, Novalis and Friedrich Schlegel, and of the poet Hölderlin's original philosophy. He concludes with an interpretation of the basic design of Hegel's system.

Download or read book Hegel Contra Sociology written by Gillian Rose and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and challenging book presents a radical revision of traditional assessments of Hegel. Gillian Rose argues that the classical origins of contemporary non-Marxist and Marxist sociology rest on the 'neo-Kantian' paradigm and that Hegel's thought anticipates and criticises the limitations of this paradigm and the problems of methodologism and moralism in sociological method. Hegel's major mature works are expounded in the light of his early radical writings. From this unusual perspective Dr Rose shows that Hegel's speculative discourse is a powerful critique of bourgeois property relations and law, or art and religion as misrepresentation and of the inversions and end of culture. The book concludes with a discussion of the end of philosophy, the repetition of sociology and the culture and fate of Marxism.

Download or read book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting written by Carl Gustav Carus and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.

This volume reconsiders some of Nietzsche’s writings on economics and the science of state, pioneering a line of research up to now unavailable in English. The authors intend to provoke conversation and inspire research on the role that this much misunderstood philosopher and cultural critic has played – or should play – in the history of economics.
