Book Principles of Plant Genetics and Breeding

Download or read book Principles of Plant Genetics and Breeding written by George Acquaah and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, plant breeders have depended primarily on classicaltools to develop new and improved products for producers andconsumers. However, with the advent of biotechnology, breeders areincreasingly incorporating molecular tools in their breeding work.In recognition of the current state of methods and theirapplication, this text introduces both classical and moleculartools for plant breeding. Topics such as biotechnology in plant breeding, intellectualproperty, risks, emerging concepts (decentralized breeding, organicbreeding), and more are addressed in this state of the art text. The final 8 chapters provide a useful reference on breeding thelargest and most common crops. In addition, over 25 plant breedersshare their professional experiences while illustrating concepts inthe text. Features include: Comprehensive presentation of both classical and molecularplant breeding tools Industry highlight essays from over 25 professional plantbreeders Chapter introductions, summaries and discussion questions Easy reference glossary Reference chapters on breeding 8 of the largest and most commoncrops Artwork from the book is available to instructors online at ahref="http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/acquaah"www.blackwellpublishing.com/acquaah/a.An Instructor manual CD-ROM for this title is available. Book Breeding Fodder Crops for Marginal Conditions

Download or read book Breeding Fodder Crops for Marginal Conditions written by O.A. Rognli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers and posters presented at the 18th Eucarpia Fodder Crops Section Meeting held at Loen, Nordfjord, Norway in August 1993. In most environments some form of marginal conditions or stress prevails. Few crops are being produced under such a wide range of environmental and management stresses as fodder crops. Improved adaptation of fodder crops to marginal conditions is crucial in developing sustainable, low-input agricultural systems. The book is unique in demonstrating the large diversity both in crops and environmental stresses that confront the forage breeders. Both general and specific aspects of adaptation to marginal growing conditions are presented, ranging from problems caused by snow and ice in the Subarctic regions of Europe to the severe drought problems in the Mediterranean regions. For everyone involved in studies of adaptation and breeding of perennial plants for marginal conditions or stress environments.

This detailed analysis bridges the gap between the specialized researcher and the broader community of plant scientists.

Book Geopolitics and the Green Revolution

Download or read book Geopolitics and the Green Revolution written by John H. Perkins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 100 years, the worldwide yields of cereal grains, such as wheat and rice, have increased dramatically. Since the 1950s, developments in plant breeding science have been heralded as a "Green Revolution" in modern agriculture. But what factors have enabled and promoted thesetechnical changes? And what are the implications for the future of agriculture? This new book uses a framework of political ecology and environmental history to explore the "Green Revolution's" emergence during the 20th century in the United States, Mexico, India, and Britain. It argues that thenational security planning efforts of each nation were the most important forces promoting the development and spread of the "Green Revolution"; when viewed in the larger scheme, this period can be seen as the latest chapter in the long history of wheat use among humans, which dates back to theneolithic revolution. Efforts to reform agriculture and mitigate some of the harsh environmental and social consequences of the "Green Revolution" have generally been insensitive to the deeply embedded nature of high yielding agriculture in human ecology and political affairs. This important insightchallenges those involved in agriculture reform to make productivity both sustainable and adequate for a growing human population.
