Book excerpt: British Goblins - Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions. British Goblins does a good job at its stated purpose - collecting and loosely categorizing Welsh Folklore of every category, ranging from the reasons behind certain customs and superstitions of daily life, to descriptions and associated stories of various faeries, goblins, and giants, to descriptions of apparitions and the view of the afterlife, to more fantastic things, like dragons, standing stones, and magic wells and stones. Although a somewhat anecdotal approach is taken, the author has in fact preserved a good deal of information that might have otherwise been lost.

Book WELSH FAIRY TALES AND OTHER STORIES 24 children s stories from Wales

Download or read book WELSH FAIRY TALES AND OTHER STORIES 24 children s stories from Wales written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 24 tales collected in and around Wales by P. H. Emerson whilst living in Anglesea during the winter 1891-2. With the exception of the French story, they were written as they were told to the collector. In most cases he amended them as little as possible, preferring to record the stories as told, staying true to the original, so that the written story would enchant readers as though it were being presented by the storyteller. Herein you will find stories like the Legend Of Gelert, The Fairies Of Caragonan, The Craig-Y-Don Blacksmith, Old Gwilym, The Baby-Farmer, The Old Man And The Fairies and many more. Like most pre-1900 societies, storytelling, mythology and history was an oral tradition and passed on in the same way by specialists such as storytellers or druids. Why do we call such a collection Fairy Tales? Well, when last did you hear a child say ‘One more folk tale please’ or 'Another nursery tale, please, grandma'? Fairy tales are stories in which occurs something 'fairy', something extraordinary--fairies, giants, dwarfs, speaking animals, or the remarkable stupidity of some of the characters. Stories of fairy interaction with humans – where the kind and thoughtful are blessed and the thoughtless and spiteful are punished. So take some time out and travel back to a period before television and radio, a time when families would gather around a crackling and spitting hearth and granddad or grandma or uncle or auntie would delight and captivate the gathering with stories passed on to them from their parents and grandparents from time immemorial. Book Celtic Folklore Welsh and Manx Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Celtic Folklore Welsh and Manx Vol 1 of 2 written by John Rhys and published by OXFORD AT THE CLARENDON PRESS MDCCCCI. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The materials crowded into the earlier chapters mark out the stories connected with the fairies, whether of the lakes or of the dry land, as the richest lode to be exploited in the mine of Celtic folklore. That work is attempted in the later chapters; and the analysis of what may briefly be described as the fairy lore given in the earlier ones carries with it the means of forcing the conviction, that the complex group of ideas identified with the little people is of more origins than one; in other words, that it is drawn partly from history and fact, and partly from the world of imagination and myth. The latter element proves on examination to be inseparably connected with certain ancient beliefs in divinities and demons associated, for instance, with lakes, rivers, and floods. Accordingly, this aspect of fairy lore has been dealt with in chapters vi and vii: the former is devoted largely to the materials themselves, while the latter brings the argument to a conclusion as to the intimate connexion of the fairies with the water-world. Then comes the turn of the other kind of origin to be discussed, namely, that which postulates the historical existence of the fairies as a real race on which have been lavishly superinduced various impossible attributes. This opens up a considerable vista into the early ethnology of these islands, and it involves a variety of questions bearing on the fortunes here of other races. In the series which suggests itself the fairies come first as the oldest and lowest people: then comes that which I venture to call Pictish, possessed of a higher civilization and of warlike instincts. Next come the earlier Celts of the Goidelic branch, the traces, linguistic and other, of whose presence in Wales have demanded repeated notice; and last of all come the other Celts, the linguistic [xii]ancestors of the Welsh and all the other speakers of Brythonic. The development of these theses, as far as folklore supplies materials, occupies practically the remaining five chapters. Among the subsidiary questions raised may be instanced those of magic and the origin of druidism; not to mention a neglected aspect of the Arthurian legend, the intimate association of the Arthur of Welsh folklore and tradition with Snowdon, and Arthur’s attitude towards the Goidelic population in his time.
