Book The Queen s Bush Settlement

Download or read book The Queen s Bush Settlement written by Linda Brown-Kubisch and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2004-02-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black pioneers (1839-1865) who cleared the land and established the Queen’s Bush settlement in that section of unsurveyed land where present-day Waterloo and Wellington counties meet, near Hawkesville, are the focus of this extensively researched book. Linda Brown-Kubisch’s attention to detail and commitment to these long-neglected settlers re-establishes their place in Ontario history. Set in the context of the early migration of Blacks into Upper Canada, this work is a must for historians and for genealogists involved in tracing family connections with these pioneer inhabitants of the Queen’s Bush. "In the 19th century one of the most important areas of settlement for fugitive American slaves was the Queen’s Bush, then an isolated region in the backwoods of Ontario. Despite much recent attention to African-Canadian history, the Queen’s Bush remains a remote territory for historical scholarship. Linda Brown-Kubisch offers a pioneering entry into that gap. With a jeweller’s eye for the biological subject, Brown-Kubisch introduces the courageous Black adventurers and the hardships they faced in Canada." - James Walker, Professor of History, University of Waterloo, and author of The Black Loyalists (1976, 1992) and "Race," Rights and the Law (1997).

Book Cultivating Community

Download or read book Cultivating Community written by Jodey Nurse and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For close to two hundred years, families and individuals across Ontario have travelled down country roads and gathered to enjoy seasonal agricultural fairs. Though some features of township and county fairs have endured for generations, these community events have also undergone significant transformations since 1850, especially in terms of women’s participation. Cultivating Community tells the story of how women’s involvement became critical to agricultural fairs’ growth and prosperity. By examining women’s diverse roles as agricultural society members, fair exhibitors, performers, volunteers, and fairgoers, Jodey Nurse shows that women used fairs’ manifold nature to present different versions of rural womanhood. Although traditional domestic skills and handicrafts, such as baking, needlework, and flower arrangement, remained the domain of women throughout this period, women steadily enlarged their sphere of influence on the fairgrounds. By the mid-twentieth century they had staked out a place in venues previously closed to them, including the livestock show ring, the athletic field, and the boardroom. Through a wealth of fascinating stories and colourful detail, Cultivating Communities adds a new dimension to the social and cultural history of rural women, placing their activities at the centre of the agricultural fair.

Book Letters from Bruce County

Download or read book Letters from Bruce County written by Dean Wheaton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-07-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters from Bruce County documents an English familys 1835 immigration to Ontario where they became pioneers in the unsettled bush. The parents of this family just happen to be the authors great great grandparents, Joseph and Susannah Bacon. The letters were written from Bruce County, Ontario in 1881 and 1882 by Joseph some years after Susannahs death to his son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Elizabeth Couch Bacon, then in Resort Township, Emmet County, Michigan. Henry and Elizabeth are the authors great grandparents. Joseph and Susannah never left Ontario but seven of their eleven children did. Letters is in three parts. Part I has copies of the original letters with printed as written and edited versions annotated to explain what and who Joseph is writing about. Part II is a narrative of the family in England where eight of the eleven children were born, about their immigration and their pioneering in the unsettled Ontario wilderness first in Arthur Township, Waterloo/Wellington Counties and finally in Brant Township, Bruce County. Also included are short synopses of their eleven children. Part III is a three generation modified register genealogy of the family documented with primary source references. The author is indebted to many cousins who are also descendants of Joseph and Susannah and who have contributed information which makes this book more complete.

Book The Ancestors of Scott Wolter Vol 2 Family Groups

Download or read book The Ancestors of Scott Wolter Vol 2 Family Groups written by Diana Jean Muir and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few individuals can document their ancestry back 85 generations. Even fewer can trace their ancestry to the Merovingian, Capetian, and Carolingian Kings, the Sea-Kings of Norway, the Ancient Irish Kings of Tara, and the Grail Fisher Kings of ancient Wales. These ancestry lines extend as far back as 780 BC in the ancient city of Jerusalem, at Tara Castle in Ireland, and Skarra Brae in ancient Orkney. Family names such as Wolter, Schwartz, Hanke, Kittlesby, Rolefson, Austin, Scott, Thorndyke, Madill, Easley and Russell soon give way to Grunewald and Albrechts from Germany, Brandt from Norway and Allington, Sinclair, Ruthven, Plantagenet, Redmayne, DeGotham, Waldegrave, de La Tour, DeVere, and de Coucy of Britain and Normandy - to Rollo, Halfdan Sveidisoon, Thorfinn of Orkney, Frosti, King of Kvenland and Owain of Wales. Queens, Kings, Earls and Templar Knights, Lords and Barons dominate the lines; all ambitious, powerful and enigmatic leaders of the past who encouraged and fought for the future that we enjoy.
