Book Industry and Human Welfare Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industry and Human Welfare Classic Reprint written by William L. Chenery and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industry and Human Welfare The Social Welfare Library is notably enriched by the present volume on Industry and Human Welfare. Its author is a specialist, but he has not written for specialists. He is a journalist, but this is not, strictly speaking, an attempt to "popularize" a technical subject. It is intended for that already large and increasing number of citizens who are concerned that industry shall be productive and not destructive; that it shall promote the general welfare, without injury to workers; that the work of the nation shall be done by the natural and legitimate workers, not by children or invalids, and each part of it by those physically and mentally qualified for it. This Library is designed for those who are interested in promoting the conditions which favor a happy and useful life for all people. Among the most important additions are those which affect income. Knowledge of the effect of industry itself on the worker and his family, his wages, his hours of labor, the regularity of employment and the hazards of industry, is therefore fundamental. The public official, the church visitor, the private citizen interested in family welfare or in child welfare, has to understand what has happened as a result of the industrial changes of the past century if he is to get the elementary satisfaction to which he is entitled from his efforts. Download or read book Welfare Work by Corporations Classic Reprint written by Mary Lathrop Goss and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welfare Work by Corporations What the term "welfare work" means. A common salutation among busy men is, "Well, how goes it?" The interest expressed by the neighbor finds its way into the industrial community and into our terminology of to-day through the verbal vehicle - "welfare work" - applied to organized thought and effort for the "well-faring," or "good going" in industry. Synonymous with welfare, technically, one reads "happiness," "prosperity," and Americans in seeking for a word or phrase that should aptly define in English what the Germans long ago called "wohlfahrtseinrichtungen," interchange "industrial betterment," "betterment work," or "welfare work." At a national conference a few years ago it was defined as "that sort of human interest which tends to promote industrial efficiency." Book Welfare Work

Download or read book Welfare Work written by E. Dorothea Proud and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welfare Work: Employers' Experiments for Improving Working Conditions in Factories Among all the changes which the great war has brought in its train, none is more significant, and none more likely to have lasting effect than the revolution in the structure of British industry. For the first time in our history many firms have submitted to a general control by the State; many workers have desisted from the endeavour to regulate the supply and restrict the output of labour. The factories are alive with new workers; the State assumes new responsibilities; fresh needs and opportunities arise; industrial conditions are in solution. In no respect has the change in our factories been more marked than in the character of the labour employed. Men of all descriptions, drawn from every walk in life, half-skilled and unskilled, have poured into munition works. Even more remarkable has been the advent of the women. From the shop, from the work-room, from domestic service - many of them utterly unaccustomed to factory or even manual work - they have come in their thousands and hundreds of thousands. There has been no readier patriotism. And these women, these young girls, submit cheerfully to long hours, to hard work, to monotonous work, so that they may "beat the Germans." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor Maintenance: A Practical Handbook of Employees Service Work There has long been a need for a book which points the way to better methods in what was once known as "welfare work" and to make clear the principles which must underlie sound service work with employees. The need for a practical handbook has also been evident; and with these needs in view the author has prepared the present volume. The aim throughout has been to give as many practical examples of successful work as possible, so that employers, employment executives, and service workers would have at hand the experience of other concerns combined with information and discussion as to the best practice. Like other new developments in industry, employees' service work will have to go through the stages of experimentation; but there is no need for costly mistakes due to a wrong conception of the purpose of such work, and it is in the hope that this book may be of assistance in avoiding pitfalls that it is offered to industrial executives and others interested in the subject. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book A Dividend to Labor

Download or read book A Dividend to Labor written by Nicholas Paine Gilman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dividend to Labor: A Study of Employers Welfare Institutions In Part III under the heading A Direct Divi dend to Labor, I have supplemented my treatise on profit sharing (which it has not seemed feasible to revise) with such later information as the lapse of ten years renders desirable. With the appendixes Nos. II. And III., this part may serve to set forth the later history of the system. To the many business firms and corporations at home and abroad with whom I have corresponded, or whose establishments I have visited, while preparing this work, my sincere and hearty thanks are due for their unwearied courtesy. As I write these closing lines, I am also mindful of two great publicists, too soon departed, to whom I owe much of light and leading, and whose labors in the cause of industrial peace this volume would fain help to continue in some degree - Francis A. Walker of Boston, and Charles Robert of Paris. Whether the dividend to labor which the economist approves and the employer establishes be direct or indirect, I trust that this book may serve to increase that deeper consciousness of kind, that more truly human sympathy between employers and employed. Download or read book Welfare of Families of Sugar Beet Laborers written by Elizabeth Sands Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welfare of Families of Sugar-Beet Laborers: A Study of Child Labor and Its Relation to Family Work, Income, and Living Conditions in 1935 This study of a group of families shows clearly the gravity of the problems that field workers of the sugar-beet industry face, involving both themselves and their children. The following brief summary of the outstanding factual findings of the survey makes apparent the importance of child-labor standards and wage standards in this agricultural industry. It concerns the characteristics of the families that work in the beet fields, the work and school attendance of the children, and the work, income, and living conditions of the families. Scope of study. - The study 13 based chiefly on interviews with 946 families of sugar-beet laborers in the fall and early winter of 1935, the first year In which labor provisions were included In the produc tion-control contracts under the sugar-beet benefit program author ized by the jones-costigan Act. Each family interviewed performed hand labor In sugar-beet fields in that year and each had at least one child under 16 years of age. These families worked In 10 beet-grow ing areas in 6 States (michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana) and comprised, it is believed, a representa tive group of families of hired beet laborers from areas where hired family labor 1s characteristic of the industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Biennial Report of the Industrial Welfare Commission: Of the State of California; 1913-1915 The original intention was to have the investigations made by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but this was found impractical owing to the fact that the bureau was already overburdened with its regular work and could not give enough time to the special work of this Commission. On January 2, 1914, the Commission opened permanent offices in San Francisco and appointed H. A. Scheel secretary. Offices were also opened in Los Angeles at a later date in order to expedite the work. As soon as the Commission was permanently organized plans for the conduct of the work and investigations of the Commission were adopted. The work of the Commission was divided into six large divisions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Conference on Welfare Work

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conference on Welfare Work: Held at the Waldorf Astoria, New York City, March 16, 1904, Under the Auspices of the Welfare Department of the National Civic Federation The report of the proceedings of the first conference held under the auspices of the Welfare Department of the National Civic Federation forms the subject mater of this volume. The discussion at the conference illustrated the purpose and scope of welfare work and the methods of its practical application in several totally different industries. Those who took part in this discussion were employers and representatives of employers who had been placed in personal direction of welfare work. These addresses include descriptions of efforts to better the conditions under which employees work or live; their value may be increased by a general view of the subject embraced in the term welfare work, and a presentation of deductions drawn from the conference. Welfare work involves especial consideration for physical comfort wherever labor is performed; opportunities for recreation; educational advantages; and the providing of suitable sanitary homes: its application to be measured by the exigencies of the case. The first essentials to the welfare of the employee are steady work, an equitable wage, and reasonable hours of labor. Book The Modern Factory

Download or read book The Modern Factory written by George M. Price and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Factory: Safety, Sanitation and Welfare There were in the United States, according to the census of 1909, 268,491 industrial establishments in which there worked 6,615,046 persons. These figures do not include a great many smaller workshops in stores, separate parts of industrial establishments and small domestic workshops. The modern factory is, therefore, a paramount economic force in the social and industrial life of the country and the nation. Factory and labor legislation, industrial relations between capital and labor, improvement of factory conditions and amelioration of the conditions of the large mass of American workers are the burning questions of the day and the most vital problems of the hour. The Federal government, the legislatures of individual states and many private social organizations throughout the country vie with each other in numerous inquiries, conferences, investigations, commissions, exhibits, etc., all bearing on the subject of industrial and factory conditions. The time is ripe for a treatise on the modern factory; for, in spite of all the intense interest in the subject of industrial and factory conditions, there is as yet no special book on this subject in the English language. An attempt is made in this book to give a comprehensive, although necessarily brief, review of the safety and sanitary conditions of factories and workshops as they are, and to indicate the methods of safety, sanitation, efficiency and welfare of factories and workshops as they should be. As sanitary inspector of the New York Health Department for a number of years, as student and teacher of sanitary science, as practitioner for twenty years in the most crowded section of the East Side in New York City, as author of a number of books on general sanitation and hygiene, the writer has had special opportunities for studying industrial workers and industrial conditions at first hand. Download or read book Simulation of Union Health and Welfare Funds Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by G. M. Kaufman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simulation of Union Health and Welfare Funds, Vol. 1 The trustees of multi-employer, jointly trusteed health and wel fare funds in the building trades face particularly difficult financial problems because of the characteristics of the industry. The move ment of both employer and employee from job to job and area to area, and the casual and variable nature of employment, mean that a man's eligibility for fund benefits cannot be based solely on a partic ular job. As a result, a system of rules has been established under which a man becomes eligible for benefits if he works a minimum number of hours during a given period. He may, by working the minimum number in a current period, become eligible for benefits at a future date, or he may have earned current benefits because of hours he has worked in the past. The minimum number of hours, the period during which they must be worked, and the length of time a worker remains eligible, vary greatly from fund to fund.
