Book Welfare Services in the Netherlands and United Kingdom

Download or read book Welfare Services in the Netherlands and United Kingdom written by Sita Radhakrishnan and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1992 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following World War II, the concept of State Welfare did seem to be the golden mean between Marxian revolution and laissez faire evolution in the human pursuit of social justice. Western democratic states that upheld the primacy of the individual and his liberty over that of the 'State' operationalized State responsibility for welfare on the basis of social policies compatible with their socio-political and economic systems. This resulted in the coming into existence of a large number of services rendered by the State to its citizens touching all aspects of their lives, cutting through informal, intermediary institutions, and developing a direct link with it. The focus of this study is on these services in two such states, i.e., the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Their provision and administration for ethnic minorities that form part of their national communities is dealt with in particular. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom have constitutional monarchical systems based on the sovereignty of the people. Liberalism is an underlying sociological base for their societies. Both had acquired overseas colonies which resulted in the settlement of people with ethnic origins different from their dominant group within their national communities. These factors make the two comparable. However, the ideological basis, social and economic forces and movements that led to the establishment of State welfare in the two states differ significantly. The study reveals that their particular ideological positions on State-Society relations have a significant impact on social policies adopted by them and in the modalities of their implementation. The British stand on assimilation in one dominant culture and the Dutch stand on integration with acceptance of pluralism throw up the genuine problems in the harmonization of social policy in a United Europe of the future.

Book Equity Choices and Long Term Care Policies in Europe

Download or read book Equity Choices and Long Term Care Policies in Europe written by August Oesterle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Employing an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to equity in long-term care, this book addresses the fact that demographic changes leading to ageing populations, financial pressures and changes in traditional support systems have brought long-term care and the redesign of care systems to the top of the European social policy agenda. Despite the importance of this issue, however, the question of equity in long-term care has until now received relatively little attention in social policy research. Rather than focusing on theories of social justice or the analysis of specific interpretations of equity, this book develops key dimensions of equity choices in a framework for systematic comparative analysis. This tool is then used to investigate long-term care policies in Europe, exploring equity choices in both the provision and the finance of long-term care. These choices are discussed comparatively with regard to the implications for the various actors and are also contrasted with basic welfare state objectives. This book represents an important addition to comparative research into several key areas of welfare and welfare state design. It explores the division of responsibilities in long-term care systems between the public and private and formal and informal sectors, the relationships between different welfare state objectives, the different types of welfare state intervention, and the principles and choices surrounding the allocation of resources and burdens.

Book Social Welfare in Developed Market Countries

Download or read book Social Welfare in Developed Market Countries written by John Dixon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book analyses social welfare in countries with highly developed economies, at that time. For each country it considers the ideological framework underlying the social welfare system and describes the historical development of both the system and the political and socio-economic context. Each chapter looks at the structure and administration of the systems in place and how these are financed. This is followed by a consideration of the nature of different parts of the welfare system, a survey of social security, personal social services and the treatment of the following key target groups: the aged; those with disabilities and handicaps; children and youth; disadvantaged families; the unemployed; and the sick and injured. Each chapter concludes with an assessment of the effectiveness of the system considered.

Book Solidarity in Health and Social Care in Europe

Download or read book Solidarity in Health and Social Care in Europe written by W. Arts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OF 'SOLIDARITY' IN UK SOCIAL WELFARE Here then, perhaps, is a British version of solidarity in social welfare, but early there are strong tensions between the powerfully liberal individualistic strands of the British understanding of the functions of the state and the socialistic or communitarian tendency of a commitment to universal welfare provision. In the search for the roots of this understanding of welfare we shall survey, fitst, the historical background to these tensions in some early British political philosophers, starting with Hobbes and ending with Mill. We then consider the philosophical and social influences on the Beveridge Report itself, and we will trace the emergence of the philosophy of the welfare state in the era following the Second World War. Finally we consider the contemporary debate, as it relates to the 'Third Way' thinking of New Labour. 2. A mSTORICAL SKETCH In the previous section we observed that the philosophy underlying the Beveridge Report could be described as 'liberal collectivism'. What are the historical antecedents of this strange amalgam of individualism and collectivism? Within the short scope of this chapter, any account of the philosophical history must be little more than a sketch, but we can perhaps understand most debates in British socio-political thought as a continuing dialogue with the well known claim of Thomas Hobbes in Leviathan that all political institutions are founded on egoistic motives.

Book Welfare and Work in the Open Economy Volume I From Vulnerability to Competitivesness in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Welfare and Work in the Open Economy Volume I From Vulnerability to Competitivesness in Comparative Perspective written by Fritz W. Scharpf and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-11-23 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking, two-volume study of the adjustment of advanced welfare states to international economic pressures, leading scholars detail the wide variety of responses in twelve countries. Rejecting any notion of convergence to some kind of neo-liberal orthodoxy, they find that most countries have remained true to the basic features their postwar model as they have liberalized. Moreover, within differenct welfare-state constellations, while some countries are still struggling to adjust, others have reached a new sustainable equilibrium. Volume I presents comparative analyses of differences in countries' vulnerabilities and capabilities, the effectiveness of their policy responses, and the role of values and discourse in the politics of adjustment. Volume II presents in-depth analyses of the experiences of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as well as special studies on the participation of women in the labor market, early retirement, the liberalization of public services, and international tax competition.
