Book International Students in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book International Students in the Asia Pacific written by Peter Kell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the growing mobility of international students in the Asia Pacific. International students comprise over 2.7m students and it is estimated by the OECD that this will top 8 million in 2020. The great majority of them are students from the Asian countries who study in the Europe, North America and Asia. In addition countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong are becoming “education hubs” and are proposing to attract international students. Over 42% of international students come from Asia and this is predicted to continue with the strong presence of students from China, India, Korea and Japan continuing. A younger population, a growing middle class and shortages of quality education providers in the Asia Pacific region means that this mobility will be a feature of the future. This book explores questions around the mobility of international students in the context of the global economy and an increasingly competitive trans-national education market. It also explores questions about the experience of international students principally from the Asia Pacific region at a time of increased global insecurity and growing hostile reactions to foreigners in the post September 11th era. This book emerges from empirical work from several research projects funded by the World Bank and several community projects to support international students. The focus is also on the way in which student mobility promotes growing connection within the Asia Pacific, as well as other regions, and provides the foundations for new notions of global citizenships.

Book Regional Economic Systems after COVID 19

Download or read book Regional Economic Systems after COVID 19 written by Fred Olayele and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing the economic and social wounds inflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic will take time, but the long road to recovery presents a unique opportunity to build back better. To catalyze change and succeed in the post-pandemic era, economic development policy and practice must see the crisis as an opportunity to rethink and redesign regional economic systems. This will involve creating a shared understanding of – and policies to address – the differential impacts of the pandemic across occupations, industries, and socioeconomic groups. This book explores the challenges and opportunities heralded by the virus in the broadest sense and presents case studies on equitable and inclusive economic recoveries.

Book Identity Culture and the Politics of Community Development

Download or read book Identity Culture and the Politics of Community Development written by Stacey-Ann Wilson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes as its starting point that issues of identity and culture are important and relevant for community development in nearly every society. It is therefore essential that community development practitioners acknowledge both culture as well as the political necessity of incorporating cultural systems, cultural values and traditions into community development initiatives. This book argues that including identity and culture in community development design, and treating identity and culture as an intrinsic asset can be beneficial for all types of community action, from social cohesion to community economic development. This book is a rethinking and reconceptualising of “community” in an international context, and interrogates what community building, community engagement and community development could entail in this context. The contributors in this volume address identity, culture, and community development in both developing and developed countries from multidisciplinary perspectives. The chapters explore different conceptual and theoretical frameworks in analysing identity and culture in community development, and provide empirical insights on community development efforts around the globe. Furthermore, the chapters explore different community engagement processes, different development models and different stakeholder participation models and processes in an effort to demonstrate that there is no one-size-fits-all design when it comes to community development.

Book Auckland Unplugged

Download or read book Auckland Unplugged written by Lindy Newlove and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These challenges include: finding an appropriate division of responsibility and labor between public- and private-sector actors; crafting and coordinating a crisis response that addresses perceived threats to community values and avoids the twin perils of underreaction (e.g., passivity or paralysis) and overreaction (e.g., crying wolf or political grandstanding); coping with competence/authority discrepancies under stress - those who have expert knowledge of the technical issues rarely have the authority to make policy; those who have the authority generally lack the technical expertise to comprehend the subtleties and uncertainties of the issues at stake; and maintaining credibility and legitimacy when facing acute, ill-structured problems in politicized, publicized, and highly uncertain environments."--BOOK JACKET.
