Download or read book A Separate God written by Elizabeth Kaiser and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2nd EDITION, UPDATED WITH A REVISED ENDING Raised in an Old Order Amish family, Rachel dreamed of living a life of joy and freedom. But her stringent upbringing prevented her from living the life she imagined. In A Separate God, follow Rachel as she grows up Amish and begins a pilgrimage from beneath the shackles of oppression, abuse, and dissatisfaction into the liberty of self-discovery. Though she embraces the beauty of the Amish and the love of her mother and father, she also exposes the darkness her community hides from the outside—the disturbed, twisted transgressions that are swept under the carpet. After years of reluctantly submitting to their rigid principles, Rachel will finally find the courage to resist the Amish structure and discover healing from a new culture that would alter much more than just her appearance. Amish society is more complex than the somber garb and horse-drawn carriages. Rather, it is a society and culture as riddled with hypocrisy as the so-called Great Society around them—a world that Rachel struggles unendingly to adapt to, an outsider even there as she looks back to the nostalgic simplicity of her past.

We want to believe God's promises to us, and we search for signs of his continuing restoration of the world in which we live. Now, with passion and heart, two leading experts on Christianity and culture cut through the chaos and uncertainty to show readers how God is powerfully active and intensely engaged in fulfilling his promise to restore all things unto himself. Through inspiring real-life stories of justice, mercy, love, and forgiveness in our midst, Smith and Stonestreet present a God who is intimately involved in his creation and using his church to work out the redemption of this world.

But when he gets there, nothing is what he thought it would be. The project has nothing at all to do with engineering, and he finds himself working alongside his wacky eighty-something- year-old aunt, a homeless man, and a punk rock girl as part of a town-wide project to adopt a boy from Romania. Mike may not learn anything about engineering, but what he does learn is far more valuable.

Download or read book Transformed written by William G. McAtee and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1964, Bill McAtee became the new minister at Columbia Presbyterian Church, deep in the Piney Woods of south Mississippi. Soon after his arrival, three young civil rights workers were brutally murdered outside Philadelphia, Mississippi. Many other activists from across the country poured into the state to try to bring an end to segregation and to register black citizens to vote. Already deeply troubled by the resistance of so many of his fellow white southerners to any change in the racial status quo, McAtee understood that he could no longer be a passive bystander. A fourth-generation Mississippian and son of a Presbyterian minister, he joined a group of local ministers--two white and four black--to assist the mayor of Columbia, Earl D. "Buddy" McLean, in building community bridges and navigating the roiling social and political waters. Focusing on the quiet leadership of Mayor McLean and fellow ministers, McAtee shows how these religious and political leaders enacted changes that began opening access to public institutions and facilities for all citizens, black and white. In retrospect, McAtee's involvement in these events during this intense period became a turning point in repudiating his past acquiescence to the injustices of the racist society of his birth. His personal account of this transformation underscores its meaning for him today and reminds the reader that no generation can ignore the past or rest comfortably on its progress toward tolerance, equality, and justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In highlighting the shift in America's intellectual culture, Brennan makes the case for seeing belief as an identity. As much as race or ethnicity, political belief, Brennan argues, is itself an identity - one that remains unrecognized and without legal protections while possessing its own distinctive culture. Brennan also champions the idea of cosmopolitanism and critiques those theorists who relegate the left to the status of postcolonial "other.""
