Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Such a slim volume for someone whos led such a long and interesting life (after all, Miley Cyruss autobiography is 288 pages)then you realize Pure Moxie is no doubt just like the author: smart, funny, candid, to-the-point and, of course, slender. J.E. Vader, Citizen Moxie, Pacific Sun, January, 2011 Money, power, sex. Pure Moxie tells the tale of one womans journey from bored housewife to trendsetter in the magazine publishing industry. Michael Rybarski, Co-Founder of Age Wave Target Marketing, Author, StartUp Smarts The impetuous Leda Sanford abandoned secure suburbia in the 1960s in exchange for a life on the edge as a top magazine editor and publisher in the competitive and male-dominated Manhattan publishing world. From her American Home launch pad, Leda pushed the industrys standards as she directed the creation and reinvention of magazines that included Chief Executive, Attenzione, Modern Maturity, and Get Up and Go! In the early 1990s, Leda shifted focus to promoting a new attitude toward aging, emphasizing that its never too late to explore new horizons and enrich ones quality of life. Book excerpt: What didn't you like about the 1990s--the peace or the prosperity? Setting aside nostalgia for the end of the 20th century, this book takes a candid look at the decade after the Cold War and before 9/11, when America's culture war began with the election of a media-savvy, Baby Boomer president (and his liberal feminist wife). Bill Clinton's postmodern administration betokened gay equality, an education-based labor force and a race and gender-diverse workplace and government, panicking conservatives and sparking the 1994 Republican Revolution. Meanwhile, with the advent of the 24-hour cable news cycle and the Internet, a media "punditocracy" arose. Parsing every event from the O.J. Simpson trial to the Monica Lewinsky scandal, commentators and talk show hosts spun news, politics and pop culture until they became one thing. Beginning with the "Red and Blue" partitioning of America that would nurture the Tea Party, and ending with the 9/11 attacks, this examination of the 1990s demonstrates how the decade shaped the world we live in today.

Download or read book The Road to Fort Worth written by Michael Jackson Smith and published by Michael Jackson Smith. This book was released on 2010-10-31 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Road To Fort Worth (Second Edition 2019) is the story of Jack Wendell's journey through the hinterlands of alcoholism, agoraphobia, and panic disorder into recovery. The narrative begins with Jack's first anxiety attack, continuing with a series of episodes that take him on a walk into an alternate universe of madness. Overwhelmed by terror and the urgency of leaving the tormenting hell that embraced him, he discovers the sedative, calming effects of alcohol. He was like a sailor lost in the fog, always seeking a safe harbor, but unable to navigate a perilous sea. He lived on his wits to find a roof to shelter him and enough drinks to render him unconscious day after day. He knew that there was no solution to the panic that engulfed him until the day he stumbled into Fort Worth. If you have a co-existing emotional disorder, you'll understand Jack's dilemma. If you're an alcoholic or one of the five people adversely affected by an alcoholic, you'll gain a new understanding of his plight. You'll never again look at alcoholism in the same light. You'll understand that a few simple principles are the key to recovery. You'll learn that it's easier to get sober than to stay sober, and that it's possible to arrive on the other side of the overwhelming obsession to drink without drinking. If you're a victim of panic disorder, you'll learn that one's internal dialogue has a large impact on panic attacks, and that a few cognitive restructuring techniques will help to ease and dissipate the episodes with practice. After reading The Road To Fort Worth, you'll have discovered how to avoid some of the pitfalls that enslaved Jack and how to begin to recover from two devastating diseases. Book excerpt: They were as different as the creatures of the land are to the creatures of the sea. Their world was “Enchantment”. Darth and Lana adopt an orphan Indian boy and assist a child prostitute. The story is much like a story of a family - but this is a tale from a Life in the Spirit. A mystical tradition in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic ways of life. Buddhism has an equivalent. It is a life after a spirit is born. Strong virtual reality visions form in the mind and the tale unfolds as Lana and Darth create a family life as close to true life as possible. It is one tradition of Life in the Spirit and this novel an insight into this tradition. Darth and Lana, she an Islamic woman of faith, he more or less a Catholic man of faith, are called to develop a Life in the Spirit for an orphan beggar child and a child prostitute. For as long as this takes they accept one another as “husband and wife in the spirit” and look after their children in the spirit – for all we know such children could be angels. An important part of the tradition is for two people to also develop a story of how they met and fell in love. Why do two people do this? The answer is tradition. True life events are often used as the basis for virtual reality type experiences and situations. Parts of the story are from ordinary life as these happened – the story of how Darth came across Lola, for example, is largely from true life. The last chapters are their children now young adults explaining about the Life in the Spirit groups they put together. The explanation is in the form of a chapter about how two people met and fell in love – each group is giving the reader a hint. Those who can understand the hint may be able to find a way to their door and into Life in the Spirit and become part of the mystery. Note that these last chapters are from different Life in the Spirit groups: University (Chapter 28; Roman Catholic); The Way of Love (Chapter 29; Islam: Enchantment Faith Paths), The Way of Wisdom (Chapter 30; Jewish), The Way of Solomon (Chapter 31; Islam: Holy Islam Faith Paths), the Way of Kismet (Chapter 32; Hindu), First Step to Heaven (Chapter 33; Buddhism).
