Book excerpt: In the world of comics it is not unusual to hear words such as "most" or "largest" or "greatest." Superlatives are the norm in the universe of the comics, and many of them are not deserved - - - but when we describe WEIRD TERROR and the most graphic, least appropriate, and bloodiest horror comic of the pre-code era, we mean it. With story titles such as DIE, DECAPITATION, HITLER'S HEAD, WRATH OF SATAN, you can make a case for these superlatives. Throw in some demonology, sadism, cannibalism, body snaching, severed head....well, you really have something. And for those who value quality as much as shock value, we have the art of Don Heck, Rudy Palais, and even a little Bob Powell! This volume feature all the stories from issues #7-8, 10-13. It is missing a portion of one page of story from issue #10, and the volume contains pages that are aged and browned. It is not offered as an example of perfection; but, we hope you will enjoy the authenticity, despite the scars. We will replace this volume free of charge when issue #9 is located and #10 is fixed. Popular but short lived, this series was published by St. John publications who at one time was a giant of the comic book industry. St. John Publications was an American publisher of magazines and comic books. During its short existence (1947-58), St. John's comic books established several industry firsts. Founded by Archer St. John (1904-55), the firm was located in Manhattan at 545 Fifth Avenue. After the St. John comic books came to an end in 1958, the company continued to publish its magazine line into the next decade. This book has been image enhanced to give the reader a comic as it was, freshly published more then fifty years ago and contains stories from two complete issues.

Book Four Color Fear

Download or read book Four Color Fear written by Greg Sadowski and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A massive collection of never-before-collected pre-Comics Code horror comics of the 1950s. Of the myriad genres comic books ventured into during its golden age, none was as controversial as or came at a greater cost than horror; the public outrage it incited almost destroyed the entire industry. Yet before the watchdog groups and Congress could intercede, horror books were flying off the newsstands. During its peak period (1951–54) over fifty titles appeared each month. Apparently there was something perversely irresistible about these graphic excursions into our dark side, and Four Color Fear collects the finest of these into a single robust volume.

Book The Weird World of Eerie Publications

Download or read book The Weird World of Eerie Publications written by Mike Howlett and published by Feral House. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eerie Publications' horror magazines brought blood and bad taste to America's newsstands from 1965 through 1975. Ultra-gory covers and bottom-of-the-barrel production values lent an air of danger to every issue, daring you to look at (and purchase) them. The Weird of World of Eerie Publications introduces the reader to Myron Fass, the gun-toting megalomaniac publisher who, with tyranny and glee, made a career of fishing pocketbook change from young readers with the most insidious sort of exploitation. You'll also meet Carl Burgos, who, as editor of Eerie Publications, ground his axe against the entire comics industry. Slumming comic art greats and unknown hacks were both employed by Eerie to plagiarize the more inspired work of pre-Code comic art of the 1950s. Somehow these lowbrow abominations influenced a generation of artists who proudly blame career choices (and mental problems) on Eerie Publications. One of them, Stephen R. Bissette (Swamp Thing, Taboo, Tyrant), provides the introduction for this volume. Here's the sordid background behind this mysterious comics publisher, featuring astonishingly red reproductions of many covers and the most spectacularly creepy art.

Book Flannery O Connor in the Age of Terrorism

Download or read book Flannery O Connor in the Age of Terrorism written by Avis Hewitt and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any age, humans wrestle with apparently inexorable forces. Today, we face the threat of global terrorism. In the aftermath of September 11, few could miss sensing that a great evil was at work in the world. In Flannery O’Connor’s time, the threats came from different sources—World War II, the Cold War, and the Korean conflict—but they were just as real. She, too, lived though a “time of terror.” The first major critical volume on Flannery O’Connor’s work in more than a decade, Flannery O’Connor in the Age of Terrorism explores issues of violence, evil, and terror—themes that were never far from O’Connor’s reach and that seem particularly relevant to our present-day setting. The fifteen essays collected here offer a wide range of perspectives that explore our changing views of violence in a post-9/11 world and inform our understanding of a writer whose fiction abounds in violence. Written by both established and emerging scholars, the pieces that editors Avis Hewitt and Robert Donahoo have selected offer a compelling and varied picture of this iconic author and her work. Included are comparisons of O’Connor to 1950s writers of noir literature and to the contemporary American novelist Cormac McCarthy; cultural studies that draw on horror comics of the Cold War and on Fordism and the American mythos of the automobile; and pieces that shed new light on O’Connor’s complex religious sensibility and its role in her work. While continuing to speak fresh truths about her own time, O’Connor’s fiction also resonates deeply with the postmodern sensibilities of audiences increasingly distant from her era—readers absorbed in their own terrors and sense of looming, ineffable threats. This provocative new collection presents O’Connor’s work as a touchstone for understanding where our culture has been and where we are now. With its diverse approaches, Flannery O’Connor in the Age of Terrorism will prove useful not only to scholars and students of literature but to anyone interested in history, popular culture, theology, and reflective writing.
