Aan de andere kant, lijkt het monastieke leven te streng en te beperkend. Velen zijn dan ook op zoek naar manieren om de monastieke waarden ook buiten hun muren te beleven en uit te dragen. Een vorm van monastiek leven die daartoe veel mogelijkheden biedt, is de wat minder gekende 'Laura'. Het woord verwijst naar de 'steegjes' die de verblijfplaatsen van laurieten met elkaar verbonden. Deze laurieten waren geen gemeenschapsmonniken, maar ook geen kluizenaars. Hun leefwijze hield het midden tussen deze twee uitersten. Ze leefden immers afzonderlijk, maar toch dicht bij elkaar. Er was dus veel ruimte voor persoonlijke verdieping, maar op geregelde tijdstippen zochten ze elkaar ook op voor gemeenschappelijk gebed. Zo'n formule kan inspirerend werken in onze hedendaagse samenleving. Aan de ene kant laat het toe om de individualiteit van elke mens te respecteren, aan de andere kant biedt het de mogelijkheid om de hedendaagse atomisering op spiritueel vlak te overstijgen.De Laura van abt Poimên is een bescheiden initiatief dat de monastieke waarden wil doorgeven aan en oefenen met wie zelf geen monnik of moniale is. Met dit boekje wil deze hedendaagse Laura daartoe enkele aanzetten bieden. Met de spiritualiteit van Abt Poimên en de Benedictus als wegwijzer brengt het ons van de geschiedenis van de Laura's tot bij enkele monastieke praktijken die ook vandaag elke zoektocht naar Godgericht leven kunnen ondersteunen.

The present study of palaeo-landscapes constitutes an important contribution to the reconstruction of the morphology of protohistoric and Roman landscapes. By means of combined geo-archaeological methods and computer technology researchers from Ghent University have tried to understand the structure of pre-medieval landscape of northwestern Gaul. Intensive use of remote sensing techniques and the application of a Geographic Information System, combined with more traditional fieldwork and analysis, open the way to a new approach of man's delineated environment during the early formation stage of the European landscape. Although the authors have tested this new approach only in a restricted region of the Roman Empire, it can easily be applied in most other parts of the Classical World. As such this well-illustrated book not only presents a detailed account of innovative investigations on early landscape structures in parts of modern France, Belgium and the Netherlands, it also procures a concise methodological contribution to early historical landscape research in general.

Brenner has tried to come to terms with an issue first raised two centuries ago: how can we explain the differences in growth-patterns of North Western European countries in the transition from feudalism to capitalism. In a frontal attack on both the '(homeostatic) demographic' and 'commercialisation' models, Brenner traced the roots of the divergent evolutions back to rural and feudal 'social-property relations'. In the debate that immediately followed Brenner's first article, and in subsequent exchanges, the Low Countries were significantly neglected, although areas such as Flanders and Holland played a decisive role in the economic development of Europe. This was partly because of too few publications in international languages on the relevant Dutch rural history. This important book, edited by two of the most respected Dutch rural historians, and with contributions by several distinguished historians, seeks to fill this lacuna. It draws upon substantial research, and confronts the Brenner thesis with new results and hypotheses; and it contains a powerful and detailed response by Brenner himself.
