Book excerpt: Weep Not, My Wanton collects eight short stories and a fifty-page poem, "WilleWorld," all based on Maggie Dubris' experience as an EMS worker in and around Times Square, New York City. Here, too, is an ambitious series of linked poems, "Toilers of the Sea," concerning other themes: extinction, time, comic books, and the passage of the old world into the new. Ms. Dubris tells us "how it is" in unheroic, often comic detail. Her stories and poems are full of strobe-lit images of the homeless, the lost, and the luckless in emergency rooms, hotel rooms, and subway tunnels. The New York street photographer Weegee wrote: "When you find yourself [feeling] a bond between yourself and the people you document, when you laugh and cry with their laughter and their tears, you will know you are on the right track." Maggie Dubris, in this debut collection, is most definitely on the right track. "I used to think that working on an ambulance would be like being in a war," she writes. "I thought that I would go up against death, face to face, and that I would win, because I wanted to so much. But that's not how it is."

Book excerpt: Lorina Skene moves between two worlds, the everyday and the supernatural, and in both she is a killer, at large and beyond suspicion in Victorian London. She is protected by her privilege and her power. But who, or what, is pulling the strings? This is a Gothic nightmare, and a tale of controlling, obsessive love, with plenty of twists, turns and weird happenings along the bumpy ride through fog and gaslight. Expect to be disturbed, and expect a broken heart, when silence falls and realisation dawns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relative peace and prosperity of the Elizabethan age (1558–1603) fostered the growth of one of the most fruitful eras in literary history. Lyric poetry, prose, and drama flourished in sixteenth-century England in works that blended medieval traditions with Renaissance optimism. This anthology celebrates the wit and imaginative creativity of the Elizabethan poets with a generous selection of their graceful and sophisticated verse. Highlights include sonnets from Astrophel and Stella, written by Sir Philip Sidney — a scholar, poet, critic, courtier, diplomat, soldier, and ideal English Renaissance man; poems by Edmund Spenser, whose works combined romance with allegory, adventure, and morality; and sonnets by William Shakespeare, whose towering poetic genius transcends the ages. Other celebrated contributors include John Donne ("Go, and catch a fallen star"), Ben Jonson ("Drink to me only with thine eyes"), and Christopher Marlowe ("The Passionate Shepherd to His Love"). The poetry of lesser-known figures such as Michael Drayton, Samuel Daniel, and Fulke Greville appears here, along with verses by individuals better known in other fields — Francis Bacon, Queen Elizabeth I, and Walter Raleigh — whose poems offer valuable insights into the spirit of the age.
