Book Labor and Laborers of the Loom

Download or read book Labor and Laborers of the Loom written by Gail Fowler Mohanty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor and Laborers of the Loom: Mechanization and Handloom Weavers 1780-1840 develops several themes important to understanding the social, cultural and economic implications of industrialization. The examination of these issues within a population of extra-factory workers distinguishes this study. The volume centers on the rapid growth of handloom weaving in response to the introduction of water powered spinning. This change is viewed from the perspectives of mechanics, technological limitations, characteristics of weaving, skills, income and cost. In the works of Duncan Bythell and Norman Murray the displacement of British and Scottish hand weavers loomed large and the silence of American handloom weavers in similar circumstances was deafening. This study reflects the differences between the three culture by centering not on displacement but on survival. Persistence is closely tied to the gradual nature of technological change. The contrasts between independent commercial artisans and outwork weavers are striking. Displacement occurs but only among artisans devoting their time to independent workshop weaving. Alternatively outwork weavers adapted to changing markets and survived. The design and development of spinning and weaving device is stressed, as are the roles of economic conditions, management organization, size of firms, political implications and social factors contribute to the impact of technological change on outwork and craft weavers.

  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Weaving written by J. K. Swindler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1991 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this moderate realist account of the whole range of issues facing contemporary analytic philosophy, J. K. Swindler aims to fill the gap in the literature between extreme realism and extreme nominalism. He discusses such fundamental concepts as existence, property, universality, individual, and necessity; analyzes the paradoxes of negative existentials and the substitutivity of co-referential terms; and defends objectivity in philosophy. The study moves through three phases: first, an argument that objective philosophical truth is attainable; second, an extended realist analysis of fundamental ontological concepts; and finally, a demonstration of advantages of this ontology over leading alternatives. Weaving: An Analysis of the Constitution of Objects will be of interest to all philosophers working in contemporary philosophy, philosophy of language, logic, and metaphysics, and will serve as an excellent text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in metaphysics.

Book Weaving Europe Crafting the Museum

Download or read book Weaving Europe Crafting the Museum written by Magdalena Buchczyk and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving Europe, Crafting the Museum delves into the history and the changing material culture in Europe through the stories of a basket, a carpet, a waistcoat, a uniform, and a dress. The focus on the objects from the collection of the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin offers an innovative and challenging way of understanding textile culture and museums. The book shows that textiles can be simultaneously used as the material object of research, and as a lens through which we can view museums. In doing so, the book fills a major gap by placing textile knowledge back into the museum. Each chapter focuses on one object story and can be read individually. Swooping from 19th-century wax figure cabinets, Nazi-era collections, Cold War exhibitions in East and West Berlin, and institutional reshuffling after German unification, it reveals the dramatically changing story of the museum and its collection. Based on research with museum curators, makers and users of the textiles in Italy and Germany, Poland and Romania, the book provides intimate insights into how objects are mobilised to very different social and political effects. It sheds new light on movements across borders, political uses of textiles by fascist and communist regimes, the objects' fall into oblivion, as well as their heritage and tourist afterlives. Addressing this complex museum legacy, the book suggests new pathways to prefigure the future. Featuring new archival and ethnographic research, evocative examples and images, it is an essential read for students of textile and material culture, museum and curatorial studies as well as anyone interested in history, heritage and craft.

Book Intertextual Weaving in the Work of Linda L

Download or read book Intertextual Weaving in the Work of Linda L written by Alexandra Kurmann and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intertextual Weaving in the Work of Linda Lê: Imagining the Ideal Reader uncovers the primary textual relationship that Linda Lê (1963– ), the most prolific Francophone author of the Vietnamese diaspora, fosters with a literary precursor of Austrian descent: the feminist writer-in-exile, Ingeborg Bachmann (1926–1973). This study offers an overdue exploration of the notably European roots of Lê’s writerly formation. It traces an unexamined feminist import in her work to a sixteen-year inter- and intra-textual engagement with Bachmann and positions the latter as an imagined ideal reader of Lê’s oeuvre. Intertextual analyses of Bachmann’s post-war novel, Malina, with Lê’s literary essays, early fiction, and trilogy, reveal that to overcome the challenges of writing in exile Lê adopts an alternative literary fore-bear of the European tradition.

Book Studies in Byzantine Islamic and Near Eastern Silk Weaving

Download or read book Studies in Byzantine Islamic and Near Eastern Silk Weaving written by Anna Muthesius and published by Pindar Press. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume complements Anna Muthesius' two earlier ground-breaking volumes in the field of silk as material culture: Studies in Byzantine and Islamic Silk Weaving and Studies in Silk in Byzantium. The publication highlights the fact that similar patterns of selection were at work in the acquisition of silks by secular and ecclesiastical bodies. These patterns of selection were governed not only by fashions of the time, but by access to international trade routes leading to the Great Silk Road linking the Near East to the Mediterranean. The surviving silks prove that Mediterranean/Near Eastern silk trade flourished continuously and for centuries prior to the thirteenth century, contrary to what has previously widely been assumed. It also highlights the crucial role of the Caucasian silk routes in accessing the Great Silk Road in the early period, and the contribution of Georgian (and Armenian) silk weaving after the thirteenth century. Above all, the book demonstrates how important it is to assess the impact of Near Eastern silk manufacture and distribution in relation to Byzantine and Islamic Mediterranean silk production and trade.

Book Weaver s Knot

Download or read book Weaver s Knot written by Tessie P. Liu and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the threads break, the weaver ties them together rather than abandon the cloth. Invisible to the untrained eye, the knot must hold if the entire fabric is to remain strong. Tessie P. Liu tells the story of the men and women in a handloom weaving community in western France who struggled for generations to preserve their way of life in the face of industrialization.Liu provides a finely detailed history of the linen weavers of the Pays des Mauges from the mid-eighteenth century until the eve of World War I. Focusing on the weavers' campaign for independence as small producers, she traces the consequences of their struggle not only for their regional economy but also for their family structure. She argues persuasively that industrialization has had a very different impact on women than on men, and that we cannot interpret the process of industrialization without an understanding of the gender relations among those whose lives it transformed.Liu also presents important new evidence that industrialization is not, as has been believed, a straight road to ever-increasing technological efficiency. According to such a view, cottage industry is merely a stage on the way to the factory system. She describes instead an unpredictable process of industrialization fired by conflicts among producers, merchants, and aspiring capitalists, all attempting to gain control of various phases of production. For the weavers of the Mauges, the author shows, the ultimate price of resistance to industrial "progress" was high: men preserved their own identity as artisans only at the cost of their wives and daughters becoming sweated workers in mechanized industries.
