Book excerpt: A history of four battalions of the Durham Light Infantry raised in the Country during the First World War. The 18th (Pals) were the first troops of Kitcheners new army to come under fire, when the Germans bombarded Hartlepool in December 1914. The 19th were raised as Bantams and the 20th (Wearside) were raised by the Sunderland Recruiting Committee. The 22nd, the last raised became a pioneer Battalion but fought as infantry through much of 1918. The book covers raising, training and active service of the Battalions. The 18th were in action on 1 July 1916 when they supported the Leeds and Bradford Pals. After fighting at Messines in June 1917 the 20th went to the Italian front. After losing its Bantams in 1917, the 19th Battalion fought on and distinguished itself in the advance in Flanders in the latter months of 1918. The 22nd Battalion had such a hard time in March and April 1918 that it was rebuilt and again practically wiped out before being disbanded in June 1918.

The 20th (Service) Wearside Battalion was raised in July 1915 in an initiative by the Mayor of Sunderland. The battalion moved to Wensleydale in Yorkshire in August, and then to Barnard Castle for intensive training. In January 1916 the battalion moved to Aldershot, where it came under the orders of the 123rd Brigade in the 41st Division. On the 5th May, the Battalion arrived in France, landing at Le Havre in time to join the Somme offensive in September. A year later the 20th fought at Third Ypres (Passchendaele). In October 1917 the battalion was transferred to the Italian front, returning to France in February 1918 just in time to plug the line when the German Spring offensives were unleashed in March. Finally, the battalion took part in the Allied counteroffensive which rolled the Germans back until the Armistice in November. This is an excellent Battalion history, the narrative is full of incident and individual names (Officers and some OR's) illustrated with photographs, maps, Roll of Honour, Honours and Awards complete this history.

Each service battalion, of each regiment has a listing, which provides a brief history of the unit and detailed information on the badges worn.It is prodigiously illustrated and contains much information, like why a shape or color was chosen, when it was adopted, what size it was, whether it was worn on a helmet, what color the helmet was and even what colors were used on horse transport; the majority of this rich and detailed information has never been published before. What helps make the information accurate and authoritative is that much of it comes from an archive created at the time and from personal correspondence with hundreds of veterans in the 1980s, many of whom still had their badges and often had razor-sharp recollections about wearing them. The book will also provide some comments from these veterans. A further unique aspect of the book is that it will look at the uniforms and badges worn before the battalions left the country, providing much new information that will enable people to identify any photographs they have lying around.
