Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration problems dealing with advanced Mathematical and Numerical Techniques have extensive application in a wide class of problems in ae- nautics, aerodynamics, space science and technology, off-shore engineering and in the design of different structural components of high speed space crafts and nuclear reactors. Different classes of vibration problems dealing with complex geometries and non-linear behaviour require careful attention of scientists and engineers in pursuit of their research activities. Almost all fields of Engineering, Science and Technology, ranging from small domestic building subjected to earthquake and cyclone to the space craft venturing towards different planets, from giant ship to human skeleton, encounter problems of vibration and dynamic loading. This being truly an interdisciplinary field, where the mathematicians, phy- cists and engineers could interface their innovative ideas and creative thoughts to arrive at an appropriate solution, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, India, a premier institution for education and research in engineering, science and technology felt it appropriate to organize 8th International C- ference on “Vibration Problems (ICOVP-2007)” as a part of its sesquicentenary celebration. The conference created a platform and all aspects of vibration phenomenon with the focus on the state-of-the art in theoretical, experimental and applied research areas were addressed and the scientific interaction, p- ticipated by a large gathering including eminent personalities and young research workers, generated many research areas and innovative ideas.

Book Elastic Wave Propagation

Download or read book Elastic Wave Propagation written by F. McCarthy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a timely collection of research papers on the latest developments in the ever-increasing use of elastic waves in a variety of contexts. There are reports on wave-propagation in various types of media: in both isotropic and anisotropic bodies; in homogeneous and inhomogeneous media; in media with cracks or inclusions in random media; and in layered composites. The bulk of the papers are concerned with propagation in elastic media, but also included are viscoelastic, thermoelastic and magneto-electroelastic wave propagation, as well as waves in porous and piezo-electric bodies. Consideration is given to propagation in bodies as diverse as stretched elastic strings to surfaces such as thin walled cylinders, and thin films under stress. Applications considered include the determination of the depth of cracks; analysis of ground motions generated by a finite fault in seismology; surface wave spreading on piezo-electric solids; and dynamical stress intensity factors. Most of the papers are theoretical in nature, and many are complemented by numerical studies. Also included are a general survey on experimental techniques, and reports on experimental work. The volume will be of interest to those who do theoretical studies of elastic wave propagation and to those who apply elastic waves whether in seismology, non-destructive testing, the fabrication of devices or underwater acoustics, etc.

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled THE PROPAGATION OF NONLINEAR WAVES IN LAYERED AND STRATIFIED FLUIDS submitted by Derek Wing-Chiu Lai for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in April 2001 In this thesis the propagation of nonlinear waves in layered and stratified fluids is investigated. In the first part of this research, "unconventional" solitary waves are obtained and their interactions are investigated by the Hirota bilinear transformation. Such solitary waves are "unconventional" because they can be expressed analytically as some mixed exponential - algebraic expressions. Furthermore, the separation of the crests goes like a logarithm, rather than a linear function, in the time scale. In a proper frame of reference these unconventional solitary waves are usually counterpropagating waves. These counterpropagating waves and their interactions are investigated for several nonlinear evolution equations which are of fluid dynamical interests. Firstly, 2- and 3-soliton expansions are obtained for the Manakov system, a coupled set of nonlinear Schrodinger equations arising from the propagation of multiphase modes when the group velocity projections overlap. A pair of counterpropagating waves is observed if the technique of "merger" of the wavenumbers is performed for a 2-soliton expansion, and the separation of the crests goes like a i logarithm in time. Furthermore, temporal modulation of the amplitude is observed if the same technique is applied to a 3-soliton expansion. A similar procedure is then applied to the (2+1)-dimensional (2 spatial and 1 temporal dimensions) long wave-short wave resonance interaction equations in a two-layer fluid. Such long-short resonance interactions can be considered as a degenerate case of triad resonance. The required condition is that the phase velocity of the long wave matches the group velocity of the short wave. The "merger" technique can also be extended to the dromion solutions. Dromions are exact, localized solutions of (2 + 1) (2 spatial and 1 temporal) dimensions that decay exponentially in all directions. In a two-layer fluid the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) systems will be the governing equation if the quadratic nonlinearity vanishes. The required condition for the case of irrotational flow is that the density ratio is approximately equal to the square of the depth ratio. Under the irrotational flow assumption only the mKdV systems with the cubic nonlinear and the dispersive terms of opposite signs (mKdV-) exist. Our contribution here is to investigate the wave propagation in a two- layer fluid with shear flows in order to demonstrate the existence of mKdV systems with the cubic nonlinear and the dispersive terms of the same sign (mKdV+). A class of counterpropagating waves and their interactions are studied for the mKdV+. From the perspective of fluid dynamics the propagation of nonlinear waves in the first part of this research is considered in the ii weakly nonlinear regime. In the second part of this research fully nonlinear internal solitary waves in stratified fluids are calculated. Such internal waves for the exponential and linear density profiles are obtained by computing the higher order terms in an asymptotic expansion where the Boussinesq and long wave parameters are comparably small. With increasing amplitude the wavelength of the solitary waves generally decreases and

Book Wave Propagation in an Elastic Medium Generalized Davey Stewartson Equations

Download or read book Wave Propagation in an Elastic Medium Generalized Davey Stewartson Equations written by Ceni Babaoğlu and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present study, the problem of (2 + 1) (two spatial and one temporal) dimensional nonlinear wave propagation in a generalized elastic medium is considered. The modulation of (2 + 1) dimensional waves is examined in an infinite; homogenous, weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive elastic medium. The study corıtaİns five ınaİrı sections. In the first section, a general introduction is given including some information about the nonlinear systems characterizing the modulation problems and the special solutions of these systems. In the second section, nonlinear evolution equations are derived describing the asymptotic behavior of waves for (2 + 1 ) dimensional wave modulation problem. While deriving the equations an asymptotic technique called reductive perturbation method is used and it is shown that the problem of wave modulation is characterİzed by a system of three nonlinear partial differential equations. These equations involve interactions of a free short transverse, a free long longitudinal and a free long transverse wave modes, and is called the ''generalized Davey-Stewartson equations''. Under some restrictions on parameter values, it is .. shown that the generalized Davey-Stewartson equations reduce to the well-known Davey-Stewartson and to the nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Besides, some special solutions of the generalized Davey-Stewartson equations are calculated by two different methods. Whİle calculatİng the special solutions by the help of the first method, travelling wave transformations are used in order to reduce the partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations and special solutions are given in terms of Jacobian elliptic functions. It is shown that these solutions reduce to hyperbolic functions for some cases and that they involve sech-tanh-tanh and tanh-tanh-tanh type solutions under some constraints on the parameter values. The second method is based on coupled Riccati equations and their travelling wave transformatİons. By using the second method, the special solutions of the generalized Davey-Stewartson equations are obtained in terms of hyperbolic functions. In the third section, it is observed that the generalized Davey-Stewartson equations are not valid for the long-wave short-wave resonant case. In the case where the phase velocity of the long longitudinal wave is equal to the group velocity of the short transverse wave, new evolution equations are derived characterizing the problem and are called long-wave short-wave interaction equations. The special solutions of the long-wave short-wave interaction equations are obtained by Jacobian elliptic functions and tanh method. In the fourth section, degenerate generalized Davey-Stewartson equations, which are obtained when one of thei, coefficients of the generalized Davey-Stewartson equations becomes zero, are considered. The special solutions of the degenerate generalized Davey-Stewartson equations are obtained by using the two methods given in the second and third sections. ...

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Flow in Collapsible Tubes and Past Other Highly Compliant Boundaries was held on 26-30 March, 2001, at the University of Warwick. As this was the first scientific meeting of its kind we considered it important to mark the occasion by producing a book. Accordingly, at the end of the Symposium the Scientific Committee met to discuss the most appropriate format for the book. We wished to avoid the format of the conventional conference book consisting of a large number of short articles of varying quality. It was agreed that instead we should produce a limited number of rigorously refereed and edited articles by selected participants who would aim to sum up the state of the art in their particular research area. The outcome is the present book. Peter W. Ca rpenter, Warwick Timothy J. Pedley, Cambridge May, 2002. VB SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Co-Chair: P.W. Carpenter, Engineering, Warwiek, UK Co-Chair: TJ.
