The future stage IV missions Euclid and LSST will cover a surface on the sky never reached before to unveil structures at very large scales and different epochs. Weak gravitational lensing will be one of the cosmological probes used to trace dark matter. Gravitational lensing is a physical phenomenon which uses the distortion of light to trace the presence of mass in the Universe. The interesting point of weak lensing is its sensitivity to total mass, i.e. baryonic and non-baryonic. Due to gravitational lensing, distant galaxies will appear distorted on the observed images. The measurement of the distortions induced by gravitational shear requires a very accurate estimation of the shape of galaxies. This thesis will present the data reduction pipeline built for weak lensing studies, from the telescope to cosmological parameter inference. The work focuses on the analysis of the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS), a u- and r-band survey covering 5,000 deg2 in the Northern hemisphere. The high resolution and depth of those data make it one the best survey candidates for weak lensing science to date. Among other things, accurate measurement of the shape galaxies requires a very good knowledge of the PSF for which a suite of validation tests have been developed. Book excerpt: In this book the applicability and the utility of two statistical approaches for understanding dark energy and dark matter with gravitational lensing measurement are introduced. For cosmological constraints on the nature of dark energy, morphological statistics called Minkowski functionals (MFs) to extract the non-Gaussian information of gravitational lensing are studied. Measuring lensing MFs from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Lensing survey (CFHTLenS), the author clearly shows that MFs can be powerful statistics beyond the conventional approach with the two-point correlation function. Combined with the two-point correlation function, MFs can constrain the equation of state of dark energy with a precision level of approximately 3–4 % in upcoming surveys with sky coverage of 20,000 square degrees. On the topic of dark matter, the author studied the cross-correlation of gravitational lensing and the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB). Dark matter annihilation is among the potential contributors to the EGB. The cross-correlation is a powerful probe of signatures of dark matter annihilation, because both cosmic shear and gamma-ray emission originate directly from the same dark matter distribution in the universe. The first measurement of the cross-correlation using a real data set obtained from CFHTLenS and the Fermi Large Area Telescope was performed. Comparing the result with theoretical predictions, an independent constraint was placed on dark matter annihilation. Future lensing surveys will be useful to constrain on the canonical value of annihilation cross section for a wide range of mass of dark matter annihilation. Eddington and collaborators, of the gra- tational de?ection of light by the Sun proved one of the many predictions of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity: The Sun was the ?rst example of a gravitational lens. In 1936, Albert Einstein published an article in which he suggested - ing stars as gravitational lenses. A year later, Fritz Zwicky pointed out that galaxies would act as lenses much more likely than stars, and also gave a list of possible applications, as a means to determine the dark matter content of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. It was only in 1979 that the ?rst example of an extragalactic gravitational lens was provided by the observation of the distant quasar QSO 0957+0561, by D. Walsh, R.F. Carswell, and R.J. Weymann. A few years later, the ?rst lens showing images in the form of arcs was detected. The theory, observations, and applications of gravitational lensing cons- tute one of the most rapidly growing branches of astrophysics. The gravi- tional de?ection of light generated by mass concentrations along a light path producesmagni?cation,multiplicity,anddistortionofimages,anddelaysp- ton propagation from one line of sight relative to another. The huge amount of scienti?c work produced over the last decade on gravitational lensing has clearly revealed its already substantial and wide impact, and its potential for future astrophysical applications.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we first present an analysis on the effect of wind at the Blanco Telescope, the home of the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), on Dark Energy Survey (DES) image quality. We find it to have a likely negligible impact on the weak gravitational lensing measurements conducted with images taken during high wind. We then present the methods and validation of two new techniques in weak lensing shear and magnification measurement. We demonstrate highly accurate recovery of weak gravitational lensing shear using an implementation of the Bayesian Fourier Domain (BFD) method, proposed by Bernstein and Armstrong (2014), extended to correct for selection biases. The BFD formalism is rigorously correct for Nyquist-sampled, background-limited, uncrowded image of background galaxies. We conduct initial tests of this code on ≈109 simulated lensed galaxy images and recover the simulated shear to a fractional accuracy of m = (2.1 [plus/minus] 0.4) × 10-3 , substantially more accurate than has been demonstrated previously for any generally applicable shear measurement method. We also introduce a new Bayesian method for selecting high-redshift galaxies and calculating their magnification around foreground lenses. We apply this method to galaxies from DES Science Verification (SV).Finally, we share the results of a survey conducted with DES collaborators on the collaboration itself, in which we find positive attitudes towards education and public outreach (EPO) in physics and astronomy. We also provide recommendations for current and future surveys on how to increase EPO engagement by scientists.
