Book excerpt: Sometimes all men or women need is a simple solution to help them with their complex problem by reading a quote. It helps them reframe and refocus so they can continue on their way in life. We Wrestle Silently is a book for those who have some kind of silent struggle in their existence, and are looking for something that will help them fight back. This book isn't just for those with military or law-enforcement backgrounds, it is for anyone who is actively engaged in some kind of battle in life and they want to use the lessons they've learned to become better versions of themselves.Learning is the process of acquiring new preferences, attitudes, knowledge, skills, understanding, or values. We're told that the character Jacob, in the Bible, wrestled with God and came away with some lessons learned. Many of us are wrestling with our self and we do it silently. We don't always ask for help when we're struggling; it could be a small or large problem. For those who like to read, I hope you get something out of reading this short book. 'Chew' on some of the quotes herein; agree, or disagree but I hope you get something and come away with a new perspective on your life. This book is meant to be a companion piece to my first book, We Fight Monsters. Why did I write this book? We Wrestle Silently is a collection of quotes that I wrote over a period of two years on Instagram. People from all over the world messaged me and explained that many of my short-stories and quotes inspired them to change course. Many of those quotes can be found in my first book, We Fight Monsters, but this book also has a lot of new material not found there. It's meant to be a pocket book to read no matter where you are. Every day when disappointment makes us die a little death, we must attempt to make something good come out of any crippling hurt or private terror. My goal with this book was to give people a little bit of mental and spiritual refreshment, as they stopped at the oasis of their life, and once renewed got up so they could continue on their journey a bit wiser. I hope I didn't fail at my task. God bless you.
Download or read book The Kings of Wrestling written by Edmond Desbonnet and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wrestling dates back to ancient times, but it was not until Edmond Desbonnet (1867-1953) produced his groundbreaking work The Kings of Wrestling in 1910 that its history was set down in book-length form. His work consists of nearly 150 biographies and accompanying photos of the men who pioneered professional wrestling, particularly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He explains how Greco-Roman wrestling emerged in France around 1845 and then evolved into a big business during its golden age of 1890 to 1910. The sport drew men from all over Europe as well as Africans, Turks, East Indians, Russians, Americans, and others. Wrestling became the first truly international sport the world had ever known. Desbonnet wrote his history in French, and it is translated here for the first time. This richly illustrated edition has an introduction and extensive annotations, along with many contemporary newspaper articles, book excerpts and magazine pieces from French, Italian and German sources.

Download or read book God on Mute written by Pete Greig and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pete Greig, the acclaimed author of Red Moon Rising, has written his most intensely personal and honest account yet in God on Mute, a book born out of his wife Samie's fight for her life and diagnosis of a debilitating brain tumor. Greig asks the timeless questions of what it means to suffer and to pray and to suffer through the silence because your prayers seem unanswered. This silence, Greig relates, is the hardest thing. The world collapses. Then all goes quiet. Words can't explain, don't fit, won't work. People avoid you and don't know what to say. So you turn to Him and you pray. You need Him more than ever before. But somehow . . . even God Himself seems on mute. In this heart-searching, honest, and deeply profound book, Pete Greig looks at the hard side of prayer, how to respond when there seem to be no answers, and how to cope with those who seek to interpret our experience for us. Here is a story of faith, hope, and love beyond all understanding.

For our modern day he is a person who aspires to be the GUNFIGHTER, WRITER, WILDMAN, MONK: Man of Action, Man of Intellect, Man of Emotion, Man of Spirit. Consider the Athenian ideal of a balanced education from the book Greek Realities: Life and Thought in Ancient Greece, By Finley Hooper "They could play some flute but should not neglect wrestling. They avoided the excesses of life. They might focus on music or philosophy but spent enough time so that their bodies did not become soft."Spotter Up is for anyone, whether they are military, law-enforcement, emergency response or not, that is searching for ways to become more well-rounded.We Fight Monsters is a collection of quotes, maxims, poems and more written and posted by the author originally on Instagram, over a four-year period of time, as a way to provoke thought, and simultaneously inspire men and women. The author of We Fight Monsters hopes it helps readers transcend the ordinary world by relishing the unexpected. The book was written because many of the followers of Spotter Up's social media sites stated, "the writing got me through some very hard times."The cover illustration is based off the Greek Hydra and the Hercules myth. Man has an internal struggle after he's battled a beast, and sometimes he must battle the beast within himself. He isn't a demigod. He's just a regular Joe who is a hero to many, that lives to win against evil. Maybe he's a Marine who did several deployments and lost some friends, maybe she's a cop fighting crime on the streets. The illustration symbolizes the brotherhood of man, (men and women), that fight the good fight despite experiencing PTSD, physical injuries, loss of friends, lovers etc."WE FIGHT MONSTERS. I'm not afraid of anything in this world that's been seen. I have scars on the inside. My badges of honor. There's a light inside my heart; it's for others to see. I live to show the way to those lost and in pain. And you? Walk with magnificence. Cock of the walk. Lead the way or follow those who use their pain to fight monsters and the injustices in this world" ~Michael Kurcina.
Download or read book Open The Door written by Catherine Carswell and published by Canongate Books. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joanna Bannerman, capricious, selfish and warm-hearted, passionately seeks life and ‘loveliness’. Certainly the bustling streets of Glasgow at the turn of the century promise much greater excitement than the solid evangelical background she has known hitherto. Her studies in the School of Art open up new horizons – of independence and love – and Joanna reaches for them all. First published in 1920, this novel powerfully evokes the image of a young woman ensnared yet ultimately released by her capacity for emotion. It contains a strong autobiographical element and is also a powerful evocation of the life and industry of the Second City of the Empire.

Book excerpt: These beautiful short stories chronicle a family's life in the Sacramento Delta, a flat expanse of tangled waterways and islands in California's Central Valley. It is a farming life of hopeful springs, backbreaking summers in the orchards and golden autumns, a time for fishing, duck hunting and raising children. Pressures from urbanization and water users in more populated parts of the state are conspiring to drain the water from the Sacramento River and its fragile waterways. The cowboys, taco truck owners, hunters, pear pickers and pot farmers who populate these stories show that it is more than water that the Delta is losing. It is a way of life.
