Book Stuck in the Shallow End updated edition

Download or read book Stuck in the Shallow End updated edition written by Jane Margolis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why so few African American and Latino/a students study computer science: updated edition of a book that reveals the dynamics of inequality in American schools. The number of African Americans and Latino/as receiving undergraduate and advanced degrees in computer science is disproportionately low. And relatively few African American and Latino/a high school students receive the kind of institutional encouragement, educational opportunities, and preparation needed for them to choose computer science as a field of study and profession. In Stuck in the Shallow End, Jane Margolis and coauthors look at the daily experiences of students and teachers in three Los Angeles public high schools: an overcrowded urban high school, a math and science magnet school, and a well-funded school in an affluent neighborhood. They find an insidious “virtual segregation” that maintains inequality. The race gap in computer science, Margolis discovers, is one example of the way students of color are denied a wide range of occupational and educational futures. Stuck in the Shallow End is a story of how inequality is reproduced in America—and how students and teachers, given the necessary tools, can change the system. Since the 2008 publication of Stuck in the Shallow End, the book has found an eager audience among teachers, school administrators, and academics. This updated edition offers a new preface detailing the progress in making computer science accessible to all, a new postscript, and discussion questions (coauthored by Jane Margolis and Joanna Goode).

Book Stuck in Neutral

Download or read book Stuck in Neutral written by Cathie Jo Martin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to conventional wisdom, big business wields enormous influence over America's political agenda and is responsible for the relatively limited scale of the country's social policies. In Stuck in Neutral, however, Cathie Jo Martin challenges that view, arguing that big business has limited involvement in social policy and in many instances desires broader social interventions. Combining hundreds of in-depth interviews with careful quantitative analysis, Martin shows that there is strong support among managers for government-sponsored training, health, work, and family initiatives to enhance workers' skills and productivity. This support does not translate into political action, surprisingly, because big firms are not organized to intervene effectively. Every large company has its own staff to deal with government affairs, but overarching organizations for the most part lobby ineffectively for the collective interests of big business in the social realm. By contrast, small firms, which cannot afford to lobby the government directly, rely on representative associations to speak for them. The unified voice of small business comes through much more clearly in policy circles than the diverse messages presented by individual corporations, ensuring that the small-business agenda of limited social policy prevails. A vivid portrayal of the interplay between business and politics, Stuck in Neutral offers a fresh take on some of the most controversial issues of our day. It is a must read for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of the American welfare state and political economy.

Book excerpt: Life can be hard to navigate at times, but for Lazarus Mitchell, it’s been a constant battle. Marrying his high school sweetheart and putting his dreams on hold to help her fulfill hers, he kept pushing through life’s adversities in hopes of seeing better days. Throughout the journey, he realized that she didn’t have the tenacity he had or the wherewithal to look difficulty in the face and choose to overcome it. Feeling heavily depressed and discouraged for the first time in his life, he worries that despair will overtake him. So, he chooses to begin anew. He enrolls in college, determined to fulfill the dreams he put on hold. He hires a tutor to help him get acclimated once again, and upon first sight of her, he realizes that love hasn’t given up on him. Kiana Solé Jordan is a matriculating graduate student on the campus of Lamar University. She loves science, but chemistry sparks her interest the most, and her love for the subject makes her want to help others understand and love it too. Tutoring is gratifying and constantly makes her smile, but when a more seasoned student requests her tutelage, she feels a lot more than gratification. The fact that he’s twelve years her senior does nothing to diminish her attraction to him. For once, she wants to take a chance on something not so safe, and the excitement of that has her feeling things she never thought possible. Lazarus has a lot of baggage to let go of, and Kiana wants to help him along during the process. But that decision isn’t welcomed by the most important people in her life, causing her to question her actions more than she should. Kiana wonders if love is worth her ignoring her parents’ and sister’s warnings regarding her new relationship, while Lazarus wonders if choosing love is worth the adversity that will come with it. Can Kiana cut ties with her family to choose the ultimate love? Can Lazarus’s ability to love be resurrected and strengthened enough to cause him to become the warrior he once was?
